Purine One and pro plan is actually decent food for the price. Also Purina is one of my clients and there facility has the same regulations as a food service distribution plant. It's spotless. We used it for our Pit Bull but he has allergies so switched to Royal Canin. What you want is a good balance of fat and protein along with supplement additives (and read moisture content, high moisture=bad). Read the ingredients and look at the first 3 items. If it starts with Corn, run. Any of the new fancy label food with wolves, nature scenes, buffalo, vegetables etc. typically have some bad science behind them and have not passed food safety and nutritional regulations. They're all marketing. Tell me the age, weight, breed, skin and hair color, and activity level, and I'll have my wife offer suggestions on food and health. She specializes in diet, endocrinology, oncology, and dental. OH AND THE BIGGEST REASON FOR GOOD FOOD, THEY DON'T HAVE TO EAT AS MUCH AND POOP IS SMALLER. Which means their bodies metabolize all of the nutrients.

Thanks for all the good info!!

The dog we are getting is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon.

She’ll probably be about 50 pounds full grown, but she’s only going to be 8 weeks when we get her.

I’m not sure on skin but she’ll have a dual coat - softer under coat and a longer wire coat.

Activity level will be high. Considered to be a “versatile hunting dog”. Waterfowl, upland birds, small game, big game blood trails... that kind of stuff.

    Thanks again!

Awesome dog! You gonna work it or just pet? My buddy has one in Montana he's cross training. So you do not have the pup yet?

She’s going to be the main family dog but she’ll get some work! Probably mostly upland birds, because I hate sitting around waiting for ducks and geese. She’ll also go with me on antler shed hunts and all kinds of other outdoor activities.

I also might get her registered to track big game blood trails - would be kind of nice to have that in my back pocket in the event we can’t find somebodies elk/deer.

Don’t have her yet! Supposed to come home with us the last week in July.

That's great! I would love to have a blood trail dog. I mostly bow hunt. That's why my buddy got one. He's lost a couple nice elk. I take it you hunt? But don't get me started about hunting...game over man! I'll hit my wife up after work. When I had hog dogs I used Natures Recipe. The purina pro for active dogs is good but I splurge on the Royal Canin because of the poop thing and it makes for a nice coat (which me and my wife believe) with minimum oily stinky fur. Yours will get some funk with the wire hair but I believe you can minimize. Like I said though, I'll talk to the Mrs. and my best friend. He's a vet also and my hunting buddy. They actually work together.

I hunt our Griff. She has plenty of energy on Wellness Core, but on days where we are going on longer hunts, or hunting in difficult terrain like when we hunt chukar we mix in about 1/2 can of a high protein wet food. I've noticed it gives her that little extra drive throughout the day.

    Griffs are so awesome.

I too am an archery elk guy! We’ve had more than one elk get lost over the years and it’s the worst feeling in the world.

Would be really nice to drive 4 hours home, pick my girl up, 4 hours back to camp and we’d be on the trail. Just a peace of mind thing!

I’m pretty anal about pet fur/coats so I might have to try a few and see what’s best.

I’ve never heard ANYONE say they had a Griff that wasn’t awesome... I may just be talking to the right people but they are pretty unanimously adored.

    I can’t freakin wait!!

The damn live feed the breeder gave us access to does NOT help. Lol

In the end if you feed a mammal it will live. There is no one best thing. But, I will say if you want to experiment you should mix the food over a couple days to acclimate their digestive system. Just watch their turds. That will tell you a lot. And the link someone posted about the cardio myopathy is true (grain free diets I assume-didn't read it) I've had to hear about it for a while when my wife comes home and a client thinks they know more than she does. She says "There are advertising companies selling dog food, but to buy from dog food companies selling nutrition" . Not sure what your experience level is on training but behavior is more my thing. I had Argentine Dogo's for 20+ years and when I sold a pup I would give each person "The art of raising a puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. Dogs only need to be fed to survive but what they want is a relationship. Then they will do anything you want. Sorry to ramble but I'm a dog nerd. Send me a pic of your pup when he/she arrives! Wish I had one. Haven't Elk hunted yet.....yet but I have lost a Whitetail of a lifetime. Good luck buddy and feel free to reach out anytime.

Thanks Jeff! You’ve been super helpful!

I’ve raised a handful of pups so far and by training technique has changed drastically. What I do know is this - I’m a positive reinforcement kind of guy, and everyone says that’s what Griffs respond to instead of negative reinforcement.

We’ll probably go with the Purina unless it gives her problems - and if that happens we’ll try slowly mixing in some royal canine.

I’ll be sure to post up some pics when she comes home. Hopefully going to see the whole litter again this weekend!

Zignature Limited Ingredient Turkey...Usually cut makers feeding recommendations in 1/2 and adjust from there...after all they are in business to sell dog food. Also add a handful of salt free green beans and a good size dollop of pumpkin to keep digestive tract free and clear. Feed 1/2 of daily requirement in morning and 1/2 in early evening.....Never free feed, its a quick trip to obesity.

Raw diet. My girl on the left have been on the raw diet since puppy hood. She's 15 yrs old now & still acts like a pup. Slightly slower but still puppyish

Does anybody feed their dog/dogs celery? My baby girl Joplin loves it, and finally after watching her eat it Cosmo's eating it to. This is a great alternative snack and freshens their breath. What's your thoughts?

Not sure we have ever. May have to try. Our dogs eat cooked green beans, carrots, & broccoli.
We had an overweight pooch a while back, started supplementing half his food with a can of green beans, straight out of can. He loved it. He wouldn't eat until his green beans were added LOL. He lost his weight but still wanted them
    LOL

yes I feed my doggies celery. typically blender it along with carrots, broccoli, and some other greens I cant remember at the moment. The oldest "recorded" living dog was a vegan so it really does help keep them healthy

Our golden retriever peaked @ 130#, started him on a green bean carrot diet, worked like a charm. He dropped to 100#
