A friend of mine has a Crew max and he just got a cap after driving the truck for four years. He has told me that he too loves to drive with the window down. He told me he should have got a cap years ago. I'll ask him if it changes anything like air flow.
I like them because I can sleep in it, keeps things dry, a little added security with the locks and tinted windows. You can stack gear to the roof without worrying about anything blowing out. I use my truck mostly for hunting and fishing.

Real nice if your outdoor activities like fishing and hunting require a more secure storage area and you can buy bed air mattresses for overnights.

Z series I believe

 

That is like the top of the line model, right? I think I went with the CX if I remember correctly it was like the middle of the road they said they sell like 80% of the canopies in that model but I may be wrong. I still have about four more weeks left until my canopy arrives looking forward to it though.

 

I think top o line would be the model with the seamless side windows. Mine has tint windows, carpet, sliding cab windows and a light. $2K+

 

I would kill to get a canopy for that price. The absolute cheapest new one I could find was a Leer Legend for $2300 CAD. The only thing it has is a removable sliding front window and sliding side windows.

 

I had a Leer on my last Truck and I looked at them again before I went with ARE. IMO Both were equivalent(same design and features), but the ARE construction especially at the hatch is far superior. The ARE cost less to boot!!!

 

Yeah, it was the opposite here. The cheapest ARE was the Z series. It was at least a couple hundred dollars more and it didn't look that nice (in terms of style) to me. I'm sure the quality would have been on par with Leer but I have no concerns with my Legend yet. Though I probably should have asked someone at the shop to show me how to remove the front window.

 

I have an ARE 'Z' series on mine. Which, interestingly enough is a quicksand SR5 too. Your good taste is obvious.
I had Leer caps on my first three trucks. They were OK but the guts inside the tee handles didn't last. I keep trucks a long time and around here the road salt eats everything all winter. I sprayed the key holes regularly with WD-40 and still after 5-6 years, the lock mechanisms inside the handles turned to mush.
The 2006 Tundra that I traded a year ago had an ARE cap with locking tee handles on the lift gate and on the flip-up windows on both sides. After 13 years, all the handles and locks were like new. I'm sticking with ARE.

 

I got rubber covers for my T handles. I'm hoping those will help keep everything working. My father-in-law's Leer is 9 years old and he's had no issues with his yet with just the handle covers but his truck fits in his garage while mine doesn't fit in mine.

 

Im considering a topper for my crew max...does your friend that got his topper recently have a profile page on this forum? I like looking a lot of different pictures and looks before I make a decision on whether I pull the trigger. Yours looks really good by the way. Like the color matching.

 

The guy at Canopy Corner showed me the latch as well. With the price and latch, ARE was my decision. I looked at the other Ranch which was only like 1200 or so. But one doesn’t get the free carpet headliner. I added the pullout front slider as I didn’t have this before with my Raider canopy on my Tacoma. Added pet screens roof rack, and wires back light. It cost me 2800.

 

Canopies are great. I mostly use my pickup for hunting and fishing as well. I have had one for years. Secure storage. Good for storing coolers in bear areas with food storage orders, use roof racks and cargo tray for gear if necessary.

This is the second Snug Top I’ve had. Honestly, I think all of the brands are susceptible to road salt and parts rotting/falling apart from washboard gravel roads.

 

Me likey! I want one so bad, but can't get the wife off the stigma that shells are only for old men lol.

 

My wife feels the same but I bought one anyway. If she didn't need so much crap when we went camping, a tonneau cover would have been fine for us and I could rock out with the rear window down in the summer. Her parents also have a canopy on their truck and her mom hates the look too.

 

Like a previous post, I primarily use my truck for hunting and fishing, and I sleep in the back. Although I prefer the look of the truck without the shell (and added weight), it was necessary to securing gear and giving me a place to sleep. I think I paid about $2100 for mine, new with carpeted interior and a hinged front window so I can access the cab (and clean the windows). Ended up making a deck with cubbies and a middle section that removes so I can fit my 120 qt marine cooler when driving.

 

The short bed is long enough to sleep in?
