I'm in my fifties and drive a Tundra. What exactly is her point again?

So, I make peace with my decision...think just put it off for a year or 2...keep what I have and maintain domestic peace....then get a text from wife.

Sends me photo of a Tundra she likes - grille is TRD Pro.

Says..”why don’t you go look at one of these...I really like the looks”

Yes...this is my life in a nutshell.

Explain that it is no different a truck aside from interior features, grille and rims from what I was looking at - and grille and rims are very simple swaps.

“Ohh...then yea, I like those...you should go buy one”

Just when I think I’m out.

I do think I will hold though till end of month or possibly some of the Covid crap to end. Too many dealers out there getting way too tight on price - and I think it will be Carvana/CarMax purchase. I initially was against the idea of those 2 - but you gotta admit, the convenience factor and the sales staff not playing stupid dealer games is nice.

Doubt I opt up to a TRD Pro - but rims and grille are easy swaps I am sure. So I guess the hunt goes on for now.

Very easy swaps. If you check out the Ultimate OEM thread on here you can see a whole list of things that can be changed easily.

I'm 44...and the funny thing about this is that up till I got the Tundra, out of all the trucks I've ever owned (S10, two F150's, one F250, a Ram, and now the Tundra), the truck never got noticed.

I bought my truck (2020 CrewMax 4x4, Voodoo Blue) on 20 March, and I have had at LEAST 10 to 12 people - the vast majority of them women - actually walk up TO my truck to either

    - ask me what it was and where they could get one, or
    - tell me it was a NICE truck, pretty color, etc. (Guys say it's 'beautiful', but to the girls it's 'pretty' LOL)

So yeah, I don't buy the "old man trying to be young" crap. If anything, a Tundra is that reliable guy who's got his sh*t straight, and the other trucks are late teenagers wearing a gallon of Axe cologne hoping desperately to pick up chicks.

LOL - that's exactly what happened to me yesterday, 'cept doing the drive-up pharmacy pickup thing at Walmart. A girl (probably mid 20's) walked up and said "I don't mean to get in your business, but that is one NICE looking truck...." and proceeded to ask me a ton of questions about it. I mean, the trucks are nice to begin with, but the blue is a huge attention getter.

(Which also means I need to keep an eye out for cops. LOL)

Just did a search - couple of SR5s new on lots near me specd like I want.

Could just lease - swap the grille and then buy it in the end.

To me - it’s about what “I” want...well at least me and the Mrs..attention getting does nothing for me.

Attention to me is the thing that sells Challengers and Vettes to middle aged men - in general at least. Sure, plenty of people buy them for the massive horsepower and performance they offer...but you gotta admit there’s at least an equal percentage of men buying these mid life crisis mobiles for attention reasons.

If I wanted a truck that drew gawkers and attention in a mall parking lot - I’d buy one of those overpriced Gladiators.

So I am down to a color and specific vehicle...it’s just finding the right deal to pull the trigger. New makes things so much cleaner...just meet my price and we sign....can’t do it - call me if you ever can and if someone else hasn’t sold me one yet...I will buy from you. No haggling, no inspecting used and no compromises.

Oh, same here. To be clear, my color preferences were literally "Not black or white." (Those were the exact words I gave the salesman.)

Wife, however, saw the Voodoo Blue one and kept on about it, and since yeah, I like blue, I figured I'd put in an offer on it. My preferred color would've been cement or MGM.

When my dad's 2000 Tundra was still on the road, 150,000 trouble free miles later, I knew I was getting a Tundra.

I probably could sell my 2007 TSS CM for more than I bought it, and that's one reason I love Toyotas. They depreciate slowly, or in my case, appreciate since I got a fantastic deal on it.

So local dealer got back to me...$355 a month for 2020 CM with SX package.

Basically - my trade pays 2 year lease. In 2 years, I either turn in and start a new lease...or buy it out.

Tempting...in 2 years will know what direction the next gen is going in and can decide to swap out....or stay with what I know.

Also gives me basically 2 years to grow money I would have plunked down on purchase....

    What’s the

    1. Interest rate ?
    2. Mileage allowed ?
    3. Residual ?
    4. Trade value before taxes ?

These values will give you a sense of perspective with respect to the monetary $355 payment.

    Thanks

So STILL sitting on the fence...

Just cannot pull the trigger on upgrading my current ride...knowing I might go towards new (and presumably lose most of the investment).

I prefer to wait until the new body/features are announced. Looked like a 2021....but due to COVID may be more like a RAM changeover with “classic” editions being out well into 2022...and the new being “early” 2022.

I bolded a flaw in your logic. Not being a dick, but you should not view a vehicle purchase as an investment. 99.9% of the time you will not gain value, so there is no investment. It is a purchase. A straight loss of funds.

Get the tundra... better resale and trade value if that's what you are worried about. You'll be crying to the bank if you get a Ram.

    Agreed !!!

As most on this site already know, a vehicle is a form of consumption. In other words, it’s an asset that depreciates in value in relation to time. As oppose to a land which is usually the opposite. The good news is that the rate of depreciation on a Tundra is slower than most vehicles which will help you in the back end the day you want to flip it. Furthermore, it’s reliable and won’t cause you headaches.

No disrespect, but if you have the means and blessed with the resources, buy what you want now and do it right the first time. Ain’t no telling what will happen tomorrow.

Nothing worse than buyers remorse or buying something twice because of nickel and diming. Or living the “I would have, should have or could’ve” life.

Not sure where you are, but in TX buying out a lease sucks. Why? Because you pay sales tax TWICE. Yep, they include sales tax for the total purchase price in the initial lease (other states I've lived in only taxed the portion you use). Then, if you buy out the lease they hit you with sales tax AGAIN for whatever your buyout of the lease is. Seems like double taxation to me, but they view it as two separate sales transactions. Worth looking in to since you are considering buying out the lease in a couple years.

By the way, I know the above from experience. Wife wanted a hardtop convertible (she'd never had a convertible). So we got a G37 on lease in case she didn't like it or if it turned oit to be a POS we could get out of it before warranty ran out - plus there were rumors of the redesigned Q60 starting to swirl. Well, she loves the damn thing, and the redesigned Q60 wasn't built with a convertible top. She wanted to keep hers, so we took the bath... it cost us a helluva lot more than it should have, but you know what? She still loves it 7 years later and uses the hell out of the top so who am I to complain? She'll probably drive it until the wheels fall off, so I guess in the end it's OK -I've made peace with it to keep the peace in our marriage lol.

I’m not looking at a vehicle as an investment.

The reference made was just to say I would be laying out $1500 into things on a truck I would possibly be selling inside of 6 months...money that will not be coming back to me...hence a losing investment.

Rarely do vehicles appreciate short term...but for example - paying $1500 to replace a non working transmission would increase the value of a vehicle as its worth little in non running condition. Adding a $1500 radio or camper topper adds little to nothing.

Section 168 is helpfull , if you buying for business you can depreciate the truck 100 % in first year only.

So another used popped up on the radar

    2018 CM

Its the right color, only 18k on it - but priced for perfection at 35k.

Does have some nice aftermarket touches and the preferred equip/convenience pack - so who knows.

I think they would need to move a solid 3k on price for me to get serious, but in this market...nothing’s impossible.

Have you considered new? I only ask depending if you are the type to change trucks often or want something more for longer term.

2020 is a bit of a game changer with the 8inch upgraded screen with full android capabilities if you are into tech. I stopped looking at 2019 and older cause of this. I knew I would not be happy with old tech. they have 2019s for 12K off where I am at because no one is buying them anymore. If you change trucks often...non issue. If you plan to keep it long term like me, well I'd be happy with the 2020 options for a long time.

yes, and new is on the table still.

My thought on radios...something new will ALWAYS come out within 5 years...and aftermarket upgrades aren’t a bad thing. If your paying on a vehicle 5 years...or now 6, or yikes 8 (as many diesel owners have to go this long to keep payments affordable) it only makes sense to buy something you can maintain and change out the tech.

Think a few years back - when computers were called PCs and they cost more than a months salary for most people. We didn’t sell and buy new when we needed more memory or storage...we added on/upgraded. Approach a vehicle like this...unless you need more speed, better performance or more HP - upgrading is the way to go.

Of course sometimes your TRS80 can only get you so far. Then it’s time to trade up.

Kinda where I am - 8 year old 6cyl 2wd is the most basic vehicle available and even the new base models blow it away.

Knowing Toyota will likely ditch the inefficient 8 in favor of a turbo 6...I can’t see going new much longer. I personally am not a turbo fan long term use. I see the power advantage - but just not a fan.

Trucks are kind of a weird thing...more users prefer dated, less flashy things. To each their own...I like some of the tech (blind spot - decent sized displays) but hate other bits (iPad like displays, push button everything that fails when a switch fails and needs a whole new circuit board)

Do you have a picture of truck from the side?
I’m throwing on duratracs on Monday. Can’t decide if I should go white letters out or hide them.

I hope you enjoy the best in whatever you decide. If you choose a Ram get one with the 3.92 axle ratio it is a much better gear to match the transmission. All the shifting and hunting is because of the 3.21 gears that end up behind it. You will have to search for a 3.92 truck depending on where you live. The Rebels have it standard. The Hemi is also my recommendation over the V6. I have had a few Rams in the past and I have not had any real problem with em.
