    Back issues are no joke, I have lower back pain that comes and goes, fortunately nothing major, but a friend of mine has a bad back. He has already had a few surgeries but soon he is going in to get his back fused for the first time. He said he will have to get it refused every 10-15 years after.

    Very 10-15 years? Damn, it's taken me 10 years to try to recover from the second fusion and I definitely wouldn't do it again (at least not on the same spot). Good luck to your friend, maybe he'll be one of the 25% that a fusion actually works for. I hope so cause it's no joke!
