As someone who works in oil and gas, I'm watching the future I worked my ass off to build for my family slowly evaporate. I can likely pivot into something else after the virus fucks off, but I'll be starting back at almost zero.

 

This is what I hate to hear and see. I read a study from Stanford today that in Santa Clara county California they feel like 40 to 80000 people have had the virus and didn't even know it which I think will be a common occurrence over the next few weeks to a few months. This is great news as it helps show the mortality rate is much lower than initially anticipated. I'm almost positive my household has experienced this already and I hope we're past the worst of this so we can get people back to work and try to save what's been lost over the last 2 months. I have been fortunate enough to have success even in these times but I know it won't last if we don’t get back to work soon and rid the fear of this virus. And even though I'm closing projects and have promise I still don't know that it will matter if the rest of my sales team can't deliver and our shop has to downsize and/or close.

 

You're a welder right? I know it doesn't mean shit coming from me but being a welder is an important job and will always be in some form of demand. Also, having read your posts for over a year I can tell you're a smart guy. If you can't survive this economic crash then we're all screwed.

 

I appreciate the kind words. Yes, I'm a welder. I'm also an emergency medical responder, which in my province is an 80 hour first aid course that puts me one step below EMT. So I do have options either in welding, sitting in an medic truck on site or pivoting into a new trade. It's a matter of how much work is available out there. Welders are pretty much a dime a dozen in my town and to a somewhat lesser extent in my province, many of them holding certifications that I don't. Getting those certs and experience will be tough if not impossible for a while now with everything shut down.

In Alberta, we have the perfect 3 way storm; a federal government that has actiively been trying to shut down the resource sector and overtly despises the western provinces, plummeting oil and gas prices leading to the industry which is the primary employer in this province pretty much shutting down, and now the coronavirus which is killing off what is left of the economy.

It's going to be very, very rough here for quite some time. I'll survive. I don't understand the concept of "quitting" or "giving up". I can only hope and pray that things will take a turn for the better and damned soon. I'm fortunate that although I made some stupid choices in the past, I was able to correct them and build a bit of a financial buffer before things went tits up. Many others haven't been so lucky.

That's excellent advice. Combine that with avoiding consumer debt and living with your means and you'll be ahead of 90% of people. I was laid off last summer for 2.5 months which drained a good chunk of my savings. With The Woman going back to school last September we've only just managed to build the 3 months of savings up before getting hit with my current lay off. For us it seems like we take one step forward, but three steps back constantly. Oh well. The only easy day was yesterday. Head up, shoulders back, keep pushing forward.

We've learned alot during this tough time and one thing I never do is make the same mistake twice. I learn and adapt constantly. I promise you that we'll be better prepared than ever for the next pandemic and the next depression.

 

Given I am staring down 70 in my headlights, all I can offer to that is keep that head up and fight hard walking the walk as you talk the talk. Pretty sure Grapes of Wrath had a lot of truths/realism, so we at this moment in time are now faced with "when times get tough the tough get going". Well wishes to you and yours !

As of today, Canada has 38,291 confirmed cases and 1,615 deaths. Alberta has 2,908 of those cases and 51 deaths. Canada's population is over 30 million, so we're doing pretty well all things considered on the covid front. It's our economy that is in ruins and will take forever to recover.

We're not totally locked down like many places down south but lots of places are closed. Lots of preventative measures though; social distancing, plexiglass shields at the grocery store tills, Costco and some others limiting the number of customers inside at a time etc. Provincial parks and rec areas are closed, playgrounds closed, gyms closed, swimming pools closed. Restaurants are closed, but many are doing take-out and delivery. Many small businesses have closed and may never open again. I read an article that said 58% of businessess in Edmonton, Alberta are on the brink of closing down.

 

That's where I'm at! I'm so happy that I went through the 08-09 recession because it really taught me so much and while I was affected I didn't have enough to lose to devastate my life but I watched my father lose his business of 30 years making six figures and it happened in 06 ahead of the crash because new homes stopped so quickly and that's where he was invested. Didn't lose his home thankfully but damn near everything else and caused tremendous health complications that led to disability. Rough times!

The positive to all that is I am in a VERY good place and could maintain my house with very low income. My colleagues who make about half of what I make are in 300-400k homes (given their spouses still work too while mine does not) and super stressed out WHILE we're still allowed to work! And I can see why because if their spouse loses their job or if they can't sell anything to take home a commission, they will end up losing everything and very quickly. It's sad to see but that was something I realized from the last time around (how quickly it happened to my family) and even though I had more buying power for my first home, I stayed with a small 1000sq ft house that only cost me $70k!

Hopefully, we all make it through this and don't lose too much! Just remember, all material things can be replaced!

Whats a good lift amount for 33s? I Wanted to be around 2" but Struts are either 0-2 or 2.5-3.5. Any recommendations for front setup?

 

I almost bought those, but somebody pointed out that the ball joints don't have the zerk fittings. I bought mine from Jegs, they are eibach arms, but really spc with the greaseable ball joint and they were $500.

 

Parts for the damn golf cart thats prevented me from working on my tundra should be here tomorrow.. if all goes will i'll have the dash out friday and prepare to spray it. The lower dash where the glove box goes has a few broken tabs i need to address and or needs to be replaced.. hmmm

 

going to "upgrade" all my clips in the truck to the ones with sealers too...should minimize any vibrations
