    Hello everyone
I just had the worse day yesterday!
I was going to replace my backup camera as the old one had a bad picture.
I took the tail get apart replaced the camera with a aftermarket one. Put the truck in revers to see if it worked. It work fine!
Put the tailgate back together but my box has a box liner that is a rug. Don’t ask it came with the truck. It is nice! Well the Velcro that would be on the tailgate up along the top of the inside of the tailgate was coming off. So I had some 2” Velcro and Decided To replace it. Well I ripped it off and wiped off the residual glue that was left behind. It was cold out so I wanted to warm up the paint so the Velcro would stick. Here’s where my day just got worse!
As I was heating up the tailgate With a propane torch and attached the Velcro
Well the under coating and cleaner I used to clean off the old glue caught on fire. By the time I opened the tailgate and got a pail of water. All the wiring and new camera were melted. The wiring was melted all through the tailgate right up to where it comes from the tailgate to the box!
    Really!!!!!
I need help fro any of you good people in an information on where I can get a new wire harness that leads to and in the tailgate. Preferably at a budget price. Does the wire harness break somewhere close to the tailgate so the harness isn’t so long as to go all the way to my stereo

dang, would you happen to have any security camera footage of said incident? jk

How badly melted is the wiring? If the plugs aren't melted, you could just cut the old and put new wires in its place.

Wire is wire, you could just cut the melted part off and replace it with new wiring?

There is a connector just on the underside of the truck bed. Lay on your back and slide in so you can see the back of the rear bumper and you should see the connector. The connector is there so people can completely remove the tailgate if they need to. I'd go on car-part/ebay/call wrecking yards and I'm sure you can find a new cable.

    Make your own wiring harness.

Why didn't you use a hair dryer?

it is most likely video wiring so it has shielding so it'a bit more complicated than just a + and ground.

OP: see if you piggy back to a plug that is not damaged and just change with new harness. or just run new wires all the way. it really depends where you burnt it.

    Lol I wish I had a video!
Didothat...... thank you! That is the answer I’ve been looking for.
I have not had time to look under the truck but was hoping the would be a connection close to the tailgate.
As for the hair dryer! I had a heat gun that pissed me off and I threw it across the garage about a week ago and never replaced it. The only hair dry I have is my 17 yr olds and well I don’t have to answer that! Lol
Does anyone know where I can buy good used parts in your area. I leave in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Nothing here

Most backup cameras I’ve installed use RCA cable which can be spliced

I would go to car-part.com and put in the: make, model, year of your truck, and backup camera. This will give you a listing of backup cameras, but you can call each scrap yard and explain to them the part you need and how it’s not the camera but the cable that attaches to the camera. They can then go to the yard and pull it for you/ship it. At least that is what I would do.

I need a new camera Anyways so I’ll try and find the tailgate harness. Dose anyone know if the harness plugs are all the same? If the plug for the camera and the harness in the tailgate is the same as the one under the box by the license plate then maybe the new camera I bought ( that burnt) my work because it had an extra at least 2 feet or more cable. Which I thought was weird
