What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Just find some used leafs and throw them in there. No reason to go spending tons of money if your not wanting to

 

Is it worth my time for new shackles (I think, the U-bolts that hold everything), and anything else I may need?

I mean if I'm in there I may as well touch up on everything that might need it. I would do this job eventually anyway, just now's not the best timing for me...

 

U bolts replace no matter what.. shackles are not a bad idea if theyre rusty, if not just get new bushings.

you can usually find local shops that can rebuild your original leaf pack if you can be down a day or 2 on the truck.

 

I have tried to make a point of doing things myself because I want to learn more about vehicle maintenance. Plus most of the local shops here hire methheads. I don't want that around my stuff.

 

im talking you remove the leaf springs and they can rebuild the leaf packs. re-arch the main spring and replace the other springs

just remember to use full synthetic. it makes the thoughts come through smoother. less leakage

I try to add about 7% alcohol to mine multiple times weekly. Makes slowing down waaaay better. Sometimes I even slow down so fast that my wife has to remind me to start again.

 

I've seen talk on here of bilstein 5100 series. I take it a lot of you guys enjoy those?

Now that you mention it at least once a week I think I smell toast. No one else ever does. I always assume I have a little micro-stroke. This may explain why my shaky hands seem to get worse by the day. Alcohol content? Yes. Quantity? Yes. Very few daily. One to two for me.

That's an understatement! I ended up having to notch the rod, so I could hold it still with pliers.

 

I have the 5100s front and rear. I would definitely do them both at the same time. If not, you will feel the body roll back more after a hard stop. It will also help with acceleration from a stop for the same reason.

 

I really didn't have much trouble with those but it may have been because of that tool that I bought. I've shared it here before but here it is again for anyone thinking about doing rear shocks. The length and flex head made it pretty easy. This has probably been one of my better tool purchases and it's come in handy on the truck for other jobs too.

That's awesome! I was using a ratcheting wrench, the tip of the rod broke off is what I was having issues with.

 

Do you have just that size(s) or others as well?

 

That's the only ratcheting wrench I have other than a small 10mm which I always use for removing the negative terminal on the battery. 17mm seems to be a common size on our trucks so I've been able to use it for a few different jobs. I want to say it came in handy for the sway bar links...

 

Okay, time for more questions.

In my googling, and binging I've noticed add-a-leaf kits. That sounds pretty straight forward as far as what it entails.

I have also seen leaf springs expansion packs which to me sounds like the same thing.

If these are viable options it may be cheaper to do one of those?

 

What are you wanting to do? I thought you were asking about rear shocks and front coilovers?

 

Just the rear items for now. Spring sag, or plum wore out-ness and I'm sure there are other components that are worn out. @scooterprint seems to think my passenger rear leaf is shot. Everything on the rear is original.

I will get into the front later on.

 

An AAL would be a short term bandaid for your leaf pack and it still wouldn't level it out.

You need new leaf packs for sure. RockAuto has Husky brand for about $300/pair shipped.
