Cold air intakes/exhaust kits???

I have both and a few others do

 

Sean i am going to say yes - the engine etc is the exact same. I just had them send me a the Volant CAI - I am not aware of any changes between the 2.

 

So I hear good things about the volant coi. I hear it's an actual coi because some of the others just don't cover the filter from all the engine heat....
I don't know a whole lot about it. I want to install one on my new tundra. But was not sure if I should...

 

Do it - you wont regret it. You do get a nice loud growl when you get on it you can hear it sucking in all the air.

 

Cool. I am definitely looking into it and I just got to pull the trigger on it and do it.

 

Other than the roar, is there any benefits to installing a COI?? Fuel mileage? power?

Totally agreed. I had a Volant CAI on my 2012 Durango R/T and the "growl" was pretty immense. I also saw about a 1.5-2 MPG increase as well as noticeable increase in off-the-line acceleration. I've had K&N, AEM, AirRaid, and aFe. I prefer the noticeable difference I found with the Volant.

Trucky, if you go this route, please post us on how it does. I've heard good things about S&B from a friend of a friend (I know right?!) who owns Addiction Off-Road here in San Antonio.

 

MrTuRDPRO, if my memory serves me correctly, the Tundras already have a Cai, with that said check out Gtek Fab over on Tundra Geeks/Sabm. I installed one on my 08 dc. You can check out mine on 2 nd generation builds, it's a big difference imop. Hope this helps

 

I thought the CAI that comes standard on the Tundra's were just as good as the aftermarket ones? Am I way off on this? Thought I read several people state that it really wasn't worth buying. I was considering the Volant CAI but wasn't convinced if it was worth spending the money on if it wasn't going to really have any added benefits.

 

Exactly scratchex, that's why I opted for the Sabmn, cheaper and dunk proven from what I saw. As I mentioned above you can check out my build, I have a pic of it installed. I also did the charcoal filter delete, as you get even more flow.

Since engine/transmission for 2nd gen is identical to 2014 and later, my experience seems relevant to the discussion.

It's interesting that how the general consensus seems to have shifted in recent years. When I was looking to buy an exhaust and intake less than two years ago, most people had positive things to say about them. Now, the most popular comment seems to be that the factory intake is a cai and after-market intake and exhaust does nothing.

I have TRD exhaust mated to TRD intake and I noticed up to 1.9 mpg improvement. I observed greatest increase when both were mated to each other. I got them for the sound, but this was an added bonus for me. Of course, the sound they make is awesome. Now I have big a$$ tires on the truck, any gain in mpg sort of went out the window. But I still do enjoy the sound.

And I haven't seen a conniving argument/evidence that intake/exhaust has no effect. Tundra Pro that just won in Baja had both TRD exhaust and TRD intake. Pro comes with the exhaust, but why install for the competition worthless intake if it does nothing. Just saying.

 

Does look like a sweet supplement to the stock airbox. What do they cost?

 

As I remember, I paid around $400. I've seen cheaper after I purchased, i think. If I were to do it over, I would look at the for sale section. If a member installs a supercharger and he had one before, he's likely to sell one (because supercharger comes with the TRD intake).

 

Initially I was looking into the TRD CAI since I had the TRD Exhaust added when I bought the truck last month. The sales manager said that the TRD CAI wasn't really all that great (didn't specify what or why) and informed me to go w/ a Volant CAI because it was a better CAI and it was what he uses in his trucks. I was initially thinking that matching up the CAI and the exhaust made sense for performance etc..but then I started looking into Volant after what the sales manager told me. I soon discovered this forum while I was doing some research on CAI's and ran across comments saying it really wasn't worth it. So now I'm unsure. I primarily wanted to get one for some small performance gains and of course the sound. Not sure how much I would hear since I have the exhaust & aftermarket tires. Guess I'll think about it some more & do some other mod's before doing the CAI if I end up doing it.

 

Aftermarket CAI and a lot of exhausts cause low end power loss. When do you drive to redline? Why would you lose power for everyday driving to gain a few at redline?

OEM is a true cold air intake, draws ambient air from the fenderwell and not the engine bay. If you have the urge to spend some coin, buy a lifetime drop in filter -AFE pro dry s if my choice.

Watch out for exhausts that allow to much flow and are not properly tuned.

If you also get the fancy, SABM. Best return on investment. Works fantastic for supercharged guys that crave extra air!

Fyi - there was an OEM airbox change which is why you cannot purchase a 13 filter and drop it in a 14/15 airbox.

So after reading some thoughts hear I did the carbon filter delete today. Anyone notice any gains by this? Hp,or mpg?

 

I had a trd cai and trd exhaust on my tacoma and was dead set on getting the same combo for the tundra until I started doing some research. From what i read on the internet, so i know its true , is that the trd cai is almost identical to the stock intake, and aside from the looks it doesn't do much for performance. I saw the kits they have to make more air flow but I don't feel like changing it. I decided to stick to the stock intake, as the 5.7 has enough power for me and I don't need the growl. For exhaust I plan to go with a trd or a corsa. I haven't heard a corsa on a tundra in person, that will help make my decision. BAMuffler seems like a great option but I'm not a fan of the boring stock tailpipe exit and for the price, if I spend a tad more I can go with a corsa with those sexy twin polished exhaust tips.
That's my .02, but I'm sure if I had a trd or volant cai I would love either because of the growl.

 

That's pretty much what the sales manager from the dealership I got my Tundra at told me regarding the TRD CAI. I really do love the sound of this TRD Exhaust, it has a nice growl to it but not too overly loud if that makes any sense. I think it even sounds better than the stock dual exhaust I have on the SRT8.

So I guess it will be the TRD Pro headlights followed by some audio additions next.

 

I have the corsa on mine and love it. But mine is a single exit. I like that look better.

 

That makes perfect sense, i also love the look of the trd exhaust. TRD headlights are my next move as well haha

Nice! Either corsa exit looks good, and nicer than stock in my opinion.

 

I did the S&B. Good product. Looks really nice too. Perfect fit. Didnt need to replace the chip. No check engine light
