Is it me or are the prices on 2020 Tundras Ridiculous???

I think it began in the early 1990s, automakers realized how much profit they could get out of trucks and SUVs. Most automakers don’t hide the fact about how much profit there is in high end trucks and SUVs. But we as consumers continue to buy them in record numbers despite the outrageous pricing.

My 2012 top of the line F-150 Lariat was $42k - my 2019 bottom of the line Tundra was $31.5k...seven years later.

 

I think the prices on new Tacomas are stupider. Around here, they're pretty much the same price as a Tundra. The only advantage to a Tacoma over a Tundra in my mind would be off roading.

 

The Tacoma's were about $2k MSRP cheaper when we looked. But rebates of $8k off Tundra and $1k off Tacoma, made it $5k+12% taxes cheaper in the end.

But Tacoma is what everyone wants to drive around in...at least here in WPG

I'll echo what everyone has said about New Vs Used too. We couldn't find a used Tundra (or Tacoma) for anywhere close to a good deal over buying new. With Toyota factory rebates, they were often more expensive.

 

I've been contemplating new vs used, Dave Ramsey swears by used.

I've been getting quotes of 15-16% off MSRP, for a plain 2020 SR5 CM.

A guy I know traded his Tundra after it started knocking, he left old oil filter gasket on and it knocked after all oil leaked out.

I'd love to save 25% for a clean used product, with one owner. All I find are dealerships trucks they bought at an auction to have inventory to move.

I bought new in 2019, paid cash at time of purchase. Had wanted to buy a pre-2018 but i felt the prices were way too high for what you got. I came from a 2001 Tundra and frankly, it's close to to the same truck as the 1st Gen. To me, the 1st Gen was the (almost) perfect truck. Only reason i had to sell is to make room for the 2nd kid. I sold the 1st Gen on CL to someone that was local and got a lot of calls.

This is only my 2nd new car purchase. I got my beloved 2005 Civic new off the lot and paid 18,000 for it at the time. love that car

 

I hear y’all. Hopefully the 2022 tundra will be reasonably priced. With base sr5 models on these current models pushing $50k for 4x4, I honestly don’t see it happening

 

Wait 5-6 months and all prices, especially used will drop drastically. Anyone that buys new right now will take a depreciation hit this year that will be unmatched by anything in recent history.

Take a look at wholesale auctions, nothing is moving and the inventory is stacking up

 

I always buy new. Toyotas have the best depreciation so when I sell or trade in I get a good chunk back. For me I'll spend 15K more for new and peace of mind. The used trucks in my area are stupid expensive, might as well go new.

I'm sitting on my hands. Waiting til May to see if I can get a Covid Discount. I can wait...

 

I work at the dealer and I inspect the trade ins that come in. Lots of them are trashed. The come in dirty, trash on the floor, maintenance not done and weird smells. It's amazing how our detail people clean them up, get the service work done to them and get and body damage repaired. Because Toyota vehicles hold their value the difference isn't worth considering the used vehicle especially if you knew how they were treated.

 

Wow $58K for the Voodoo Blue!! I got my Army Green Tundra CrewMax at that dealership 2 months ago.

 

I agree that trucks are overpriced but an SR5 is $50k CAD here. Shouldn't that be about $42k USD there or less?

 

My SR5 was $41,XXX before tax and such, but with rebates added in. I think paying interest on taxes is crazy, so I never finance it, but it was moot in this case. I just took my trades in and said what I would be willing to pay OTD. Didn't care what the trades were, or the price of the truck, or how many fees there were. Just wanted my loan about to be the right number. Had my own financing with a better rate than theirs, so that might have helped. Anyway, my actual OTD was $36,XXX so I was happy with it.

 

Hold out for the one you want.

I'd normally agree with that but certain vehicles don't take that $10k hit so soon. Some are worse than others.

I researched myself going in to buying my Tundra to make sure it was still a good deal to buy new. The other thing that helps is of you plan to keep it a long time.

My 16 Tundra was totaled from a rear end collision. It was 10 months old with 14kiles on it. The at fault insurance wrote me a check for $2000 more than I paid out the door at the dealer. Do the math there.

 

Resell on Toyota trucks are so good that some times you are better getting new instead. But to answer the OP's original question, yes- ALL new vehicles are overpriced. It's insane.

 

Yes! The MSRP on all new vehicles is insane.

 

Are you just looking at the sticker? Go to Edmunds and go to new car pricing. Go through it and op the truck the way you want it. You'll get three prices:
1) MSRP
2) What they call "True value" which is what most pay
3) Dealer cost.

Start from that and negotiate up from there.

I purchased new. I could not find a truck I wanted. And the resale on these trucks is excellent.

So if you are not as picky as I am, find a good used Tundra. If you "want what you want", then your stuck and have to buy new.

BTW: Traveling and looking at multiple dealers is your friend.

 

I would not hold your breath for the 2022 prices to come down.

If anything there will be a bit more of an increase on the new 2022 models due to the R&D cost plus the cost of the new tech most likely to be used in the new models. Plus rebates will likely be a ways out after the release of the new models.

Every year there with all brands there is typically about a 1-3% price increase.

I had bought a new 2017 Platinum and bought a new 2020 platinum. I think only paid about 2500 difference between them and got quite a few more tech goodies with the 2020 that the 2017 didn't have available. Basically from what I had seen on the actual out the door prices on my last two Tundras there was just 5% increase over 3 model years.

I am curious what model are being compared here from 2018 to 2020. There was not much of a price increase over those year. Maybe $1200-2500 increase over those 2 years depending on what models are being compared as long as comparing apples to apples.

 

Given the current economy; there will likely be some rebates, interest rate slashing, etc. rolling out if this keeps up. Toyota tends to be one of the last ones that start doing that though.

 

That is very true, a 2020 could end up being as cheap or cheaper then his 2018.

Cars cant be cheap as long as you keep raising the minimum wage it reduces the buying power of people who had decent wages

 

I bought my 17 Limited new in March 2017 and my 20 1794 this past December. I'm only seeing about $2k difference between 17 and 20. My 17 stickered about $47k but got it for $43k, my 20 stickered about $55k and I got it for $50k. Looking at Limiteds when buying my 20 they were around $49k sticker some higher but most had factory options (steps, tonneau cover, etc.). Both my trucks had nothing but bedliner except my 1794 has a sunroof for about $850.
