I've been searching and asking questions and still can't decide..input appreciated. Pictures after install would be great too.

There is way too much crap to soak up from the web so I'd like to ask you guys that have put in a new H/U.

    Pros/cons would you recommend it?

Just got off the phone with Crutchfield and the guy is recommending the
https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113DMX9706/Kenwood-DMX9706S.html which is a somewhat pricey unit or a Pioneer 1500NEX. Which is 200 cheaper.

Sony XAV AX7000.. From Crutchfield installed it about 4 weeks ago, no frills high power “45 watts RMS per channel” head unit with CarPlay/AndroidAuto. The only problem is my Rockford Fosgate speakers can’t handle it! So I’ll be getting better speakers soon? Put A Kenwood in my daughters car, it has more features/toys but the Sony sound crushes the Kenwood. All I wanted was CarPlay and power without adding an AMP so it was a perfect fit for me.69C27D06-6903-4D82-A0C0-F9B86F817190.jpg

Pioneer NEX - 8100 in a gen2. A few years old model but very solid.

Cant go wrong with Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, or Sony. Just get the features yo want / need.

Pioneer AVH-2500 NEX. I like it and it links with the backup camera that I had installed. Only downside is that it sometimes looses connection to the steering wheel controls or can't connect via bluetooth. I also wish that it had a volume knob.

My only recommendation is, get one that has an adjustable screen angle. I have a Kenwood DNX696 and when someone sits in the passenger seat and wears a bright shirt, it reflects onto the screen to the point where I can't see anything on it.

I got the new Alpine ILX-W650 for two reasons: 1) is was one of the cheaper/larger Apple ready setups that has a capacitive touch screen (and it is really nice) and 2) it is designed to pair with the 4 channel power pack amp, the Alpine KTA-450 that delivers true 50 watts RMS x 4

I paid $430 for both and am really happy with the setup. I already had speakers and sub. You can see in my pic how shallow the head unit is and the bracket that comes with allows the amp to fit all nice and tidy right behind it. Very slick.

I also installed an NEX Pioneer in my Subaru a number of months back and it is really great as well. The alpine has a much nicer screen that is very easy to modulate and a very comprehensive means of adjusting the soundstage. I think both were in the $250 range, my pioneer put out a bit more wattage when comparing HU to HU which makes a difference if you aren't using an amp. Every watt counts!

In my 2014 non-JBL Tundra I've had 5 different HUs.

    1. Stock Entune, tried for over a year to get a decent sound out of it and gave up.

    2. Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113DDX9903/Kenwood-Excelon-DDX9903S.html

Loved the HU, but I hated that it had a warning that required touching the screen on every startup.
I know that sounds trivial, but it bugged me to no end so I decided to replace it.
    Also wireless carplay came out so I bought;

    3. Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_1304400NEX/Pioneer-AVH-W4400NEX.html

It worked ok, seemed to lag when touching the screen.
Started crapping out on me after 18 months.
I actually gave it away on the forum.
This thread describes the issues I had with it

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/fs-...g-please-read-entire-post.64740/#post-1688510

    4. Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_130AVW4500/Pioneer-AVH-W4500NEX.html

Figured I'd give Pioneer one more try.
Main reason, the 4500NEX was pretty much the same HU as the 4400NEX so I could use the same harness and just swap the HUs.
Had it my truck for a total of 15 minutes and sent it back to Crutchfield.
Had the same screen lag as the 4400.
Plus at that moment, they had the next HU on sale for $449.

    5. Kenwood Excelon DMX906S
    https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113DMX906S/Kenwood-Excelon-DMX906S.html

It doesn't have a CD player, but I don't use one anyway.

    Pros of the Kenwood;
I like the layout, the menu, and quick the response of the Kenwood touch screen.
The Pioneer has some lag in the screen. only fractions of a second, but it seemed like forever.
Kenwood also has a 5 volt preamp output, Pioneer has 4 volt.

    Pros of the Pioneer;
HDMI input, I put one in the dash to mirror my iPhone, but found I never used it, Kenwood has no HDMI input.
SD card slot that made downloading screen images to the HU easier, could have kept music on it but didn't, Kenwood has no SD slot.
Pioneer allowed to change startup and background screens.
There is supposed to be a way to change the Kenwood startup with a secret menu and specific parameters of the pic file, I just haven't had time to mess with it.

The features of both HUs are pretty much the same; 13 band EQ, TA, crossovers, wireless Carplay, 2 USB inputs, HD Radio, XM tuner input, etc.
Kenwood has a 2 year warranty.
Pioneer 1 year, mine started acting up after 18 months.

I'd go with the Kenwood of your choice.

Ive got the Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX @1lowlife mentioned in the previous comment. I bought it because i really wanted wireless carplay. While it does have cool features, lowlife is correct about the button lag. I wish it were more responsive. Seems a bit ‘buggy’ for lack of a better word. There needs to be a firmware update on this thing to fix it. If it were quicker id 100% love it. But for now im at a 70% satisfaction level. With the limited amount of options equipped with wireless carplay, im going to put up with this headunit for a while. Sounds great though, Filters and EQ’s all work great.

I've got a Kenwood something or other (not sure of the model number). I love it because of the infinite sound adjusting capabilities. The sound quality is amazing. The cons are that you can't dim or shut off the screen at night (c'mon Kenwood) and sun glare makes it impossible to see the screen. I didn't originally install it but I have removed it. Pretty straight forward hookup but it requires an aftermarket trim surround.

    Thanks everyone.
I've read that thread more times than I can count! HA!

How do you like the Alpine so far? I considered that H/U. Does it have the annoying message at the beginning every other 1 seems to have?
    Can you dim the screen?

I don't know if I've even came across a H/U that is an actual "in dash" one that has an adjustable screen.

It's ok. I don't love it, don't hate it. One reason I got it is because it has a feature where you are supposed to swipe anywhere on the screen with 2 fingers to turn the volume up and down. I thought that was a good compromise for not having a volume knob. That feature kinda sucks. I've ended up just pressing the volume buttons on the bottom. Also, I'm not sure if it's because I have super dark window tint but on cloudy days it keeps switching between night and daytime mode. That's really annoying. I think it's because the cab is so dark so if you don't have dark tint it shouldn't be an issue.

I've not noticed any annoying message at the beginning but it may be there. I know there is a 5-10 second delay before the screen loads but I'm ok with that as I usually let my truck idle for 15 seconds before shifting into D or R.

The Kenwood I installed indeed has adj screen.
Finished install about a month ago, still need to install SiriusXM components but haven't been rushed to install. I have SiriusXM account for other vehicle and CarPlay let's me use that account with iPhone SiriusXM app for now. All bought thru Crutchfield and very pleased with that decision !

The Kenwood units that have the CD player behind the screen do. There are a few preset option so you can make the bottom come out a bit so it angles back. My biggest gripe about my HU is I can't see it if someone is in the passenger seat because all I get is their reflection. If you angle it up a little you change the whole angle of incident and reflection thing.

    I did forget to mention this;
I will give a nod to Pioneer on the control of the dimming the screen.
You can set dimmer and color setting for the screen and the keys/buttons separately.
And it has more dimmablity (is that a word?) than the Kenwood, even the higher end Kenwoods have the same lack of ability settings.
But that doesn't make up for that screen lag, I'm glad others commented on it.

On my Kenwood Excelon DMX906S, I can dim it down (2 settings, lights on or lights off @ 9 intervals +4 or -4) and it dims with the lights are turned on.
But I would have liked to make it a little dimmer, I run my dash lights pretty low.
There is a 'screen off' setting on this unit as well.

As others stated only the HUs that have a CD/DVD player will have a physical adjustable tilting screen .
Mine (no cd player) has a setting for angle, but it just changes something in the screen, it doesn't tilt.
But that doesn't bother me, I have no issues with reflections.

Pull up whatever HU you're interested in on Crutchfiled and go over the manual..

It's good to know that other Kenwood models at least let you dim the screen. Not sure why they neglected to include that on mine. I do have a CD player and can adjust the screen tilt, so I got that going for me. Which is nice.

Mine dims when I turn on my headlights. You can also dim the screen and keys to separate levels, I think.

Looks great. Thanks for input. Where did you mount your back up camera out of curiosity? I've seen guys do tailgate handle or some it's just stuck to the bumper (crutchfields example). I need 1 will make backing up much easier.

After temporarily mounting it just below my ARE LSII handle, license plate and center of tailgate handle, I chose the tailgate handle. Used a spare handle until I really decide I like that location....but I do like that location given it gives me the similar view I am used to on our 2017 Highlander.

I am rocking a Kenwood DMX906S with wireless AA and I LOVE IT!

Huge upgrade in audio quality and so easy to use. Screen and system is quick and responsive with tons of options.

    Worth every penny.
