I'm thinking of snagging a Pelican Sentinel 100X Angler kayak. I need to burn a fitness spending account I get from work before my lay off. After tax, I'll only be out of pocket $130 for it. My idea is to use it as a quick day trip watercraft, primarily for scouting new waters befor returning with my serious fishing boat. It would also be used for just screwing around out on the water once we get The Woman a kayak as well.

Does anyone fish out of a kayak, or own this particular model? Any feedback?

I didn't really want a boat, so I got a kayak for fishing. I went with the Jackson kayaks coosa hd. Really good sit on top that's wide and stable so you can stand up while fishing which is a huge plus. I wish they would have made a foot drive option when I purchased mine in 2017 but they didn't. It would be really nice to have the foot drive for those long trips because it's a big workout If you're paddling out a mile to a spot and end up paddling against the wind. If you're gonna do some serious fishing in it, I would recommend getting a fish finder for it as well. I went with the nocqua battery which is awesome because it connects straight to the fish finders and can be charged by plugging into the wall. At least with my yak it makes the whole setup really clean because I just have two cords coming out of the center console that connect to the finder that mounts with the ram ball mount on the rails.

Also need a good anchor. I'm gonna go with the anchor wizard this year because even with a little bit of wind you'll get blown all over the place and there's nothing more annoying than getting to a good spot and making one cast and having to paddle back again.

Anything else you wanna know just ask. I've been doing this for a couple years now so I've definitely picked some stuff up along the way I wish I would have known at the start.

Nice! Thanks for the info. I'll definitely be looking into added a few things once I get my hands on the boat. I want to keep it as streamlined as possible. If I'm going to be unloading and setting a whole bunch of stuff up, I'll just bring my 12ft jon boat that's tricked right out. An anchor and a mount for a fish finder is a great idea though. :)

Idk how much the one you're looking at is, but Jackson makes some really high quality yaks and they were one of if not the first to make true fishing kayaks.

I just wish the foot drive ones weren't do damn expensive or id definitely get one.

I just have a 3 lb anchor attached to some Paracord for now. It works fine, just kind of a pain having all the excess line in when you're moving and making sure it doesn't get tangled. The anchor wizard eliminates those oroblems so I'm looking forward to using that this year

I've never fished for kayaks. Do I use live bait or delightful lures/jigs?

This one will run me $630 all in. I get a $500 personal fitness credit from work that I need to burn up by next week and I can't afford to buy a super nice kayak. The Jackson boats look great, but they're pushing $1000 here. The foot drive kayaks, no matter the brand, seem to go $1500+

I've fished from many kayaks. If your starting out the ascend fs12t, slow but very stable. I like the vibe sea ghost right now but more expensive

I kayak. It's nice to go where the motorboats can't and get fresh air and exercise.

I have had a hobie outback for about 6 years. The reason I went with a hobie was I have 2 bum shoulders and the pedal drive helps with that. The other great thing about pedal drive is the fishing rod is always in your hand so you fish more. But whatever kayak you get will be a blast to fish from. A 2lb bass will tow you around if you let it. Keep it simple.

    1. Buy a good paddle. A light well designed paddle will make it easier to get around and fish. Go to a kayak shop and have them tell you what size paddle you should be using.
    2. Anchor pole. Make your own or buy one. PVC pole you stick in the sand or mud as an anchor. Way better than a regular anchor.
    3. Anchor trolley. This mounts to the side of the boat and allows you to move the point where the anchor is connected to the front or rear of the kayak. Example: if you were on a river and toss out an anchor more than likely you would end up facing down stream. With an anchor trolley you move the attachment point to the front of the kayak and you will face upstream.
    4. Net. If you are a bass guy and accustomed to just lipping or swinging your fish it's not as easy in the yak. Get a net.

Just like fly fishing you can make it a complicated or as simple as you want. Start out simple and see where it takes you.

I thought about getting the peddle drive for my Lure for lake fishing but can't really use it on the river.

The down side to peddle drive is super shallow water and thick weeds but outside of that you will out fish a standard kayak fisherman every time because you are able to fish more. More casts = more fish

The other down side is they want over $1k to add it to my yak, lol. I don't fish competitively so I'm not worried about outfishing anyone.

That's the most important thing, getting out on the water with those that matter. :)

I may have a slight water addiction: 12ft jon boat, FishCat Cougar pontoon boat, FishCat Fat Cat V-boat and now this kayak with a second to come for The Woman once things are back to normal. I also have a 13ft v-hull stored at my dad's place in BC. We won't talk about my plans to eventually buy a much bigger, fancier boat someday. :D

    Agreed!

Yeah, you may have a slight obsession... :monocle:
How many months out of the year are you able to get your fix?

I manage to fish year round. I ice fish in winter. :D

I'm only able to use watercraft for about 6 or 7 months though, unless I get back to my hometown in southwestern BC which has a mild climate. Then I can usually take the v-hull out on the Fraser River for sturgeon and cutthroat trout or some local lakes for rainbows.

If I’m not at work or spending time with the wife I’m out on the water.
I have a lure 11.5 with the overdrive system.

Kayak fishing is addicting. You’ll want to upgrade that yak in no time.

The most important upgrade I did when I was using a paddle kayak was an anchor trolley. You will need it to control the yak in current and in wind.

I used to fish for Bass from my little 9 foot kayak. It was great in ponds and I caught a ton of fish. I tried a few lakes and it was okay but bad in the wind. Then it was just too expensive to add a motor to it so I could stop paddling hahaha so I gave it to my brother.

Has the OverDrive worked well? I was hesitant to buy it when introduced, waiting for them to work any bugs out.

The pedal system itself is great.
My only complaint when I got the kayak was the steering system. But they brought over the 8 ball system from the dorado over to the lure to replace the old flimsy lever system.
