A lot of tundra bros here have done crazier stuff than me. I'm thinking it would be good to read some details.
    I will start......

Tie wire a propane bottle under the hood with the line wedged into the carburetor (out of gas)

Remove a bent drive shaft and hobble home with just the front axle driving

Run on Coleman fuel (out of gas)

Took a bent tie rod off and straightened it on a cattle guard with my double jack

    So let's hear it brothers...

@ColoradoTJ , @dragos28 , hey, I expect you've seen a couple out of the box solutions to get home. One thing I've heard of but never done is field welding with the battery. No?

Once my AC fuse blew and I had to drive home with Windows down. It was like 80 degrees.

I'm surprised you didn't call for a limo taxi and get that worthless truck towed to the shop!

A little of this and a little of that.
While deer hunting our u-joint broke and not only were we out in the middle of nowhere the closest town had three cows and no stop sign. We had to use bailing wire to hold up the drive shaft and use the front wheels for propulsion. Lucky the three cow town had a part that was compatible with the old chevy we were in. Moral of the story: by a Tundra.

When I was a teenager we lived 50 miles out of the city. One night while going home in my friends car his radiator ran empty. Sprung a leek a few weeks back but nothing serious, or so he thought. On that night going home the car overheated right smack in the middle of the city and home. My friend opened the hood and peed into the radiator so we could make it somewhere. Needless to say it stunk like pee all the way home. Lol

The same car's gas peddle broke one time. I forget the details but I remember reaching down where the accelerator peddle was and pulled on the cable when he needed some gas.

man, luckily the worst i've ever had happen is two flats, a broken coil on my coil over, blown out rear shocks (both) and my battery metal hold down coming loose and making contact with the positive post, melting the metal hold down and burning several wires.

i've demolished a tree and a boulder at 60+mph in a hard turn... but really never had any problems. like Chris said, we usually are really well prepared, @osidepunker usually runs the front of the group with his LT truck and calls out any road hazards, which i usually assume are further away and hit at full speed. lol
Alex would have some better stories, i know he got a guy to camp with a ratchet strap, something about his UCA bolt coming out.

Thought this would be right down your alley

Dang, Dragos, was that all one wreck? Or separate incidents?
What I was hoping for with this thread was stories about the creative solutions some folks have come up with to get home.

I thought it might inspire some bros to think outside the box as well as help answer the continual recurring question,"What should I bring....?" (I believe I've seen at least 7 variations of this question posted in the last couple years)

I like hearing the stories about self recovery whether on the highway or off road.

Years ago, 1968, while on a hunting trip in north west Nevada at one of my dads cousins ranches that was mainly used in spring/summer for grazing, we got our 64 2WD Chevy pickup stuck bad in alkali mud. This was late Oct and the ranch was deserted by then. There was a large Percheron mare draft horse still there. My dad had me catch her and I rode her bareback for almost 25 miles to the nearest ranch that had humans. Real cowboys. Talking about crazy looks. I explained what was up and that I was real thirsty. Was immediately given my first beer, a Coors no less. I was thirteen. Been downhill ever since. Hoo Wee.

So is that old truck still out there stuck in the mud?, seems like what happens sometimes to me if I start drinking beer before I'm unstuck!

They loaded up the mare into a 1ton Dodge with horse racks and we went back to the ranch. Took about 1 second to unstick the Chevy with that 1ton Dodge. More beer ensued after that.. My dad never did find out about that beer they gave me. heh heh.

Plenty of times we have rigged something up for "trail extraction". I think the worst was a snapped leaf spring on a taco. Happened in some off camber rutts while winching the truck out, which made it a pain in the ass to get free.
We ended up jacking it up, straitening the axle and ratchet stapping the leaf spring to the frame to keep the axle inline while we gotit unstuck. Then towed it to the nearest road.

Moosehead Lake...Maine. Ice fishing. 1972 F-150. Trying to get off the lake. Got caught in a wicked winter front, complete white out. 50-60mph winds. Zero visibility. It was -10 without the wind chill. Worked truck so hard to get off the ice, the radiator blew...had to drill a hole every 20-30 feet to fill the bait bucket with water and pour into radiator. BTW, the original water poured into the radiator still had bait in it!! After several hours of this routine, started to drill another hole and came up with dirt and rocks. Visibility was so bad we couldn't even tell we were on land.

    Dad was/is a crazy SOB.

    Let's see:

Once had an YJ Jeep front leaf pack come off the spring perch. We used ratchet straps, chains and binders, and drive it out. Pretty impressive considering where we were.

I had a rear drive shaft explode on Rusty Nail in Moab. I had to front wheel drive that shit. Thankfully I had a D60 front axle that can take that abuse.

So going back to my opening post,
Here is a little more detail; last one first, In a '73 Datsun, 2WD, 4 Cyl (before they were called Nissan) I was running along at about 60 when a front wheel hung in a rut and the truck rolled up on its side. Pretty light weight and was able to push it back onto all 4 wheels (I had tools scattered all over the place). looking at it from the front, it was toed in severely and the tie rod was bent way down toward the ground. I removed the tie rod and took a short hike with my double jack and tie-rod in hand to a cattle guard and beat the tie rod as straight as I could. Since I had not loosened or moved the adjusting locks it was still in alignment although I took it in and confirmed this at a shop the following Monday.

The drive shaft I bent on a 4x4 Nissan (before they were Frontiers) crossing a railroad track. Wasn't real bad, but too bad to drive. Had to run a ways up the RR track to a crossing to get off their right of way.

Running out of fuel was a chronic problem (probably why I put the 48g tank on the Tundy) I would not hesitate to run these trucks on Coleman Fuel today, its just like super refined unleaded gas, beats walking.
The propane trick is a 2 person job, someone needs to be cranking while you open the valve on the bottle. Only on a carbureted rig, no fuel injection back then. As long as you have a vacuum to pull it in it will start to run. you have no throttle, of course, but you can ease it into drive and roll along. Don't know if you've ever run an engine with just starter fluid, but its similar.
