Ok, so got talked into testing a Ram Rebel today.

For background - I'm shopping for my next truck and first thought was Toyota. After all, they are reliable, good resale and have a brand loyalty on par with Ford/Chevy.

Tried the Tacoma - no go. Way too small for my 6'2, 260 frame. Head touching tge headliner was a no go for me.

Tundra, I really liked - first was a new SR DC - nice, but lacked some of the "extras" I was looking for. Tried a used SR5 CM next..very close to what I want...back was almost too spacious. Next went to the SR5 DC and thought I found "it" - challenge eould be finding right used at right price.

Anyway - wife wanted me to try a Ram...said the Toyota was too "old man trying to be young" - so went along with it today and tested a Ram Rebel.

Now, I'll start by saying if you think a Tundra is "old man" the Ram is that on steroids in my opinion. Way too much carbon fiber and badging for my taste inside. The gimmicky shifter knob is annoying and the rear space leaves alot to be desired. Accessories - oh there are plenty...but again, creature comforts young people can live without and things drivers of work trucks hate...to many electronics.

In a way, it feels like a full size Tacoma to me...not a bad thing. More comparable to a Tacoma than a Tundra. I liked some of it actually - the 6cyl wasnt bad...Id probably opt for a 8, but highway use the 6 is fine.

The ugly - that transmission/shifting. I swear to god it felt awful under 65. Could have just been the tester I had - but god I hated it. Felt worse than my old Focus. Seems to be a trend with Dodge over the years...decent engines/crap transmission.

I am actually torn...go with what I know I like (Tundra) or try Ram....Ram is different, thats for sure...but diffent in a good way? I always felt the Hemi was a marketing ploy to the real hemis. Its a pricey gamble - but buying used, Ram is more affordable than Toyota.

I looked at new Rams before buying my used Tundra. Could have had a v8 Ram new...for just a little more than what I paid for the Tundra.

What changed my mind was reading some of the Ram forums out there. Way too many issues for many of the Rams, some of them severe. Electrical issues, transmissions failing, infotainment systems gremlins, lots of problems with the tech on the trucks.

I just could not see spending that kind of $ and a truck potentially being in the shop all the time.

Do you like reliability and holding value in a vehicle? Easy as that go tundra you can mod these trucks to look anyway you want it’s not hard. I think the rams are ugly. Way to much going on.

I'm not sure I get the wife's opinion on the Tundra. Before I got mine, I test drove them all, and I thought the Tundra had the most "every man" feel of them all. It has the least amount gimmicky kind of stuff going on. I started to consider the Ram as well, but after doing more research, like frichco228, I was done. I just couldn't see dealing with all that. The Tundra has some issues as well, there's plenty of discussion on this forum about them. But it seems to have less overall, in my opinion. In the end, it comes down to personal preference. When your ass is in the seat, which one feels better?

I am not a fan overall of Ram or their electronics.

As far as reliability...be careful with what you read. Internet is full of mis information on all brands.

Resale only matters when you sell. If I keep a truck 10-15 years...anything is going to depreciate a great deal. My comfort/happiness during those 10-15 years matters more than what the next guy will give me.

Without a nice big extended warranty, the ram would be a no go for me.

look at Toyota’s from the 80s still brining in close to 10k. Only thing that’s gonna hold value at that age that’s domestic is a diesel. I know 3 people with rebels all have had some issues. Haven’t had one on my tundra and it’s been 5 years. If it’s about what you want then why ask on a tundra forum. It’s going to be one sided. I won’t buy another domestic vehicle again after the last couple my wife had just complete junk. I don’t see how dodge and Toyota even compare in longevity. To me a vehicle is an investment the less money it takes to maintain and the more it’s worth when it’s time for me to move on from it is my deciding factor in a rig.

comfort and technology can be upgraded easily in these trucks.

My friend has a new Ram (not rebel) with the hemi and the hybrid system. It's kind of weird to me and felt jerky during a lot of starts as he was pulling away from lights. I mean he did average around 20mpg though. The ride was fine, and honestly it's not a bad looking truck inside or out. The back seats (it was the larger 4 door with the small bed) were plenty spacious and had far superior under seat storage than my Crewmax.

However, I would never buy it. And actually neither would he. He is leasing it and initially wanted a Tundra. But the leasing options were significantly better through Ram at the time. And since he has no plans to keep it long term, it made sense for him.

The only way I would buy a Ram, is if I needed a diesel. My old man has a 2016 with a Cummins, all decked out with the fancy limited features, and it is a very nice truck. Tows like a dream too. It easily accelerates just as fast on an on-ramp towing a car & trailer as my daily Subaru does with my foot to the floor  I love my Tundra, but when given the chance, I'll steal his truck to tow with.

Warranty is a bandaid on a gunshot wound to me.

    No problem is ideal

Problem occasionally and resolution is acceptable.

Known issues and hoping and arguing with a warranty to get it running again is not something I want to deal with.

Like I said, all brands have their issues. This technology isnt unique - its 3rd party stuff sold to the makers. Some are just more cautious on mashing new stuff in than others to existing platforms.

    Exact feel I got.

MPG is nice, but I'd take reliability over fuel economy.

I also agree with the Tundra being more everyman. The Ram stands out in a crowd, but not sure I want to stand out.

I think it's more like, a vehicle is a constantly depreciating asset, and we all just want to choose the one that will depreciate the least. ;)

I had my last Tundra for 16 years. It killed me to let it go, but I needed more back seat space for a growing family. It was still a solid truck. The only people I know to have kept a Dodge for that long is.....nobody :poking:

Yes..my thought exactly. If you want to "invest" in vehicles...bring a wheelbarrow of cash to your local vintage Ferrari or Porsche botique.

Otherwise - its like "investing" in scratch off tickets. You might have fun and once in a while find a good one...but long term you lose.

Honestly, it's not hard to make a Tundra "stand out" if you want it to. There are a thousand aftermarket wheels, suspension, grills, fender flares, light bars, stereo upgrades etc. What ever tickles your fancy you can make it yours.

I also chose reliability/dependability over MPGs. I have a soft spot for foreign cars, except when it comes to going fast. Then I love my shitty GM products :D

I'm very close to buying a Tundra, and the only truck that has come close to stealing me away is the Rebel.
As good as I think it is, I can't get the reliability issues out of my head. Yes, you can get a good one and avoid the shop for the most part, but overall they just don't seem to be built as well and the likelihood of it giving you some big issues at some point before, say 50k miles, is pretty high.

I had a Jeep before this Taco and it was in the shop 4 times in 3 years w significant issues. Just bc it was not put together well. It's already a huge investment, more than the Tundra, with that and my line of work - I need the thing to be more than likely to give me 100k of problem free driving.
14 mpg is a horrible thing and I'm not looking forward to it, but I also want that V8...could be the last year for the V8 pro.

Let’s not forget that in 5 years every single damned Ram dashboard will be cracking and falling in on itself. They’ve trademarked that. I honestly wanted a Rebel also but a test drive proving that the truck simply didn’t fit me and the fact that the trim level I wanted came with air bags was a deal breaker.

Just buy the Tundra and you will never regret it. I am driving my 4th Tundra in the last 20 years and not one of them has ever been in the shop except for the air bag recall on my last 1st gen. Maybe I am just lucky but close to 1/2 a million miles of complete reliability says a lot to me :)

The only time I ever felt like I wanted a Dodge was when they launched the new body style back in the 90s. Now I look at them like eww wtf was I thinking. Dodge/Ram whatever they call themselves these days is utter garbage and the only way I would have one is if it were given to me and then I would sell it. I think the cabins were drab and cheap plastic feeling a few years ago and now they've over done them with bright plastic and cheap trinket-like doo dads. If it weren't for the Cummins, most people wouldn't even own one.

Resale is a moot point on a Ram.

I bought a 95 Ram new back then. It was actually a great truck. V8, got a 4wd black short bed. Towed ok....was a beast offroad with a Rancho 3 inch lift and 35 inch tires. Only issue I had during the 4 years I owned it was a starter and battery replacement.

Funny....I actually still see a ton of that generation ram still running around. They have gone downhill since then for sure.

    When I read...

"but god I hated it. Felt worse than my old Focus"

I said to myself, he just bought a Tundra.

Why is this even a conversation after that impression on a test ride.

If I said I actually hated something about a vehicle I was test driving, the test ride is OVER.

    VS

"I'm shopping for my next truck and first thought was Toyota".

Think no more... Get searching for a nice DC and enjoy the privilege of having one of the best trucks out there!

I actually loved the look of the generation before that one. Solidly built with 12v Cummins and 1 ton running gear. Beasts.

    I used to own a 2002 Ram 1500.

After *SEVENTEEN* times in the shop in 18 months (5 of them for the same thing), I couldn't take it anymore. Granted, yes, that was almost 18 years ago, but still...when you have THAT bad of an experience, it leaves a lasting impression. You literally could not pay me to drive a Ram.

I drove Dodges for 24 years. A Ram 1500, then two 2500 Turbo Diesels. I had really good luck with all of them, but that's an apples to oranges comparison.

Life is about tradeoffs. It's your money, you need to determine what your priorities are. When I sold my last Ram, the most reliable full size pickup was the Tundra based on numerous reviews and articles. Reliability was my #1 priority.

Figure out what your priorities are and then see how each one matches up to those.

I had a RAM Rebel as a rental for the last week and it was just terrible.
Lots of creature comforts in the interior, sure, but it drove like a giant turd.
It shifts every two seconds, the hood scoop is like looking down a proper Italian's nose trying to drive, and the interior gaudy as hell.
For what its worth, I have had a dozen or more Chrysler products over the years, so I'm not hating just to hate. I actually wanted to like it :notsure:

FWIW, here in the PNW all the Rebels I've seen used that are 1-3yrs old and <30k miles are selling for about 30-35k. Some are 35k and only 1yr old and have 10-15k miles. Thats a huge out the door loss. In the same amount of time, my Pro was cheaper and has depreciated about a 1/3 as much as the Rebel.

If youre buying a Rebel, shop used and save some serious cash. GL

As I’ve said...a I am 98.9% sold on the Tundra.

I also will say I am not one to drink ANY of the corporate kool aide they are selling....anyone who tells you Toyota is flawless and Ram is junk bound to be in for service daily is just another internet fan boy drinking what they are selling.

my local Toyota dealer has 12 advisers back in service - CDJR has 4. Even if they outsell CDJR 4 to 1 - that’s still same vehicle to advisor ratio...or are you telling me they only service Prius’ and the free oil changes at Toyota?

The inter web is great at giving raw numbers...for example, a lot of people with a similar complaint. I am not blind to the faults of Ram...probably the reason I looked to Toyota first...we go to what we kno to be true. Fact is things change year to year with cars design wise...sometimes within the year. I think Toyota does a nice job of keeping changes to a minimum and keeping customers happy and it serves them well.

I think Ram did a nice job with putting a lot of tech and convenience options in their truck. If they had spent a little more on goodwill with customers 2002-2016, this might be a different conversation. Toyota set the standard in my mind on the rusted frames. Was it completely voluntary - no, they had some nudging....but they could have done a lot less too.

I’m going to give Ram on more shot at impressing me I think...then I will buy a a Toyota. Doesn’t hurt to check out what others are doing...but I also set the bar higher for something I know less about or without the track record. Maybe if I was a 20 something looking for flash and had 30k in my pocket - Ram would be more appealing. No way I could get a newer TRD Pro or even buy and dress out a SR5 at that price. But as I don’t see the need to show off in the local mall parking lot these days..I will probably stick with boring and reliable.

Oh yea...topic might be a dead horse, but this dead horse seems to still attract the flies to it. If there was no interest - it wouldn’t garner any viewers or replies. I get I’m on a Toyota site - so viewpoint is skewed, but still refreshing to see a lot of posters who acknowledge not every Toyota is perfect for everyone and in the end it’s what makes the BUYER happy...not how damn many likes strangers give you.
