Toyota approved mine under warranty no questions asked. Hopefully they do a good job. I told them I was worried about it and was told not to worry they have done a lot of these.

A guy in my office building has a 2018 Sport. He bought his truck a few weeks before I bought mine. I passed his truck in the garage and took a look. His driver's side is dry, but the passenger side is starting to weep.

Hi all, considering a 2020 but seeing 77 pages of this somewhat puts me off from it after owning a new Ford that leaked oil everywhere from the oil pan gasket/seal. Does anyone have any data or know what percentage of trucks this affects? Assume that nothing has changed and it will affect 2020 models? If you had this issue, would you buy another truck knowing it could happen? And lastly, do you think this is a big enough concern to get the extended warranty? thanks all!

Has tried high mileage synthetic? Supposed to swell the seals more and help plug oil leaks.

2013 Tundra 77k miles, got the bad news about cam shaft leak. Got quoted $3,634 to get it fixed. Also said rack and pinion needed replacement due to steering system leak $2,610 for that. Not a good day. How long can you run these safely before having to get it fixed?

OK fellas, just so I have this clear, if one or both sides of the Cam Tower are leaking has Toyota been fixing them for free provided the truck is still under the 5 year/60K mile power train warranty?

Reason for my asking what is likely a noob question, I am fixing to pull the trigger on a '17 Tundra (possibly tomorrow) with 35K miles that I test drove yesterday at a local dealership (not a Toyota dealership). It was a trade-in and looks to be in excellent shape. I looked at the engine (both above and through each side wheel well) and could not see any evidence of a leak, but there again, I probably needed to remove some of the plastic covering the engine to tell for sure. Given what I've read on here about the cost to repair this leak I am somewhat apprehensive, but if it can be repaired under warranty then I am willing to move forward with the purchase. Thoughts?

I had my 16’ fixed few months ago at 50 K, pass side was leaking. No issues as long as it is within 60/ 5 yrs. I was trying my best to get both sides fixed but to no avail.
Go ahead pull the trigger, you’ll be happy. I love my truck

Well, Just checked mine after reading this. 20k on a 2018. Still perfectly clean. Good thing to watch for occasionally before the warranty runs out. Really not a big deal though... my '08 jeep leaked so much oil I really didn't need to do an oil change - just a filter change. (at least that's what I joked, but it really was true - about 1Q per 1000 miles and dripped onto exhaust and stunk.) And leaked coolant at the water pump. and the brake cylinder had to be replaced.
And don't even get me started about my BMW. It educated me on what a camshaft position sensor did. And ABS sensors. And how much an AC compressor costs, and much more...

Sometimes reading these forums is like watching social media to get your coronavirus update. better not to dwell on everything you hear, just keep basically informed.

As common as this is , on this thread, it seems like only two people that had the repair done have had any recurring issues. One was a mechanic screw up and the other was a persistent leak that was cured. Unless more people have had repair problems that seems to be a pretty good track record.
Cracking open the engine has me worried as a lot can go wrong. My only experience with something similar is basically a head gasket on my wife's old Subaru. Everything just sort of self destructed at that point. That doesn't seem to be the case by user experiences on here.

Well, I looked at mine and it's wet weaping also on the passenger side of my 2017 (39K) and slight drip on the engine tab just below cam tower sealant on driver side. I degreased it and cleaned it up. I'll see how long it takes to come back.

Dropped my truck off for the leak on the driver side and just got a call 24 hours later than the repair is complete. Does this sound right? Dealer said they found a quicker way to repair these without removing everything.

It is possible if they started on it right after you dropped it off and used the method that doesnt pull front timing cover off. Hopefully they didnt try sealing from inside the valve cover, seen a dealer try that once and it didnt last long. I would ask for details.

Picked up the truck. Service Advisor wasn’t in so I wasn’t able to ask him. Did a quick inspection. It’s raining where I'm at. Everything looks clean. Let me know what you guys think.

Get a pic from the wheel well on the side that was done and you should see black sealant instead of grey.
If the cam tower area is black sealant look towards the timing cover. They likely did the trick I do and left the cover on. You shouldn’t have any issues if they did it right.

If this is indeed a new way to "fix" the problem, how are they able to do it without removing the timing chain cover which is what I understand is the old way to do it?
