So after you get back to your vehicle after shopping, do you have a sink at your vehicle to wash your hands? This is the type of thinking that will get someone killed. Air born is number one, and touching surfaces is the other way to contract it.

 

I was thinking about that but if I'm grocery shopping, do I take the gloves off before I put food in my cart? Also have to be very careful not to touch the outside of the gloves with your bare hands while putting them on and taking them off.

You don't know who touched the cart last, and you can wash the groceries off when you get home. Simple things sure beats being sick. Glove removal: grab the rim at your wrist and pull off so they are now inside out.

 

Why not avoid touching your face and then hand sanitizer before you get into your vehicle? If you have to buy groceries anyways I think were all screwed there, its the only place your allowed to go in many states. Stay home from everything else but everyone go to the same grocery store. If its airborne #1 then its in the grocery store air we are all walking through. If you were really worried about not contracting it you would go no where at all and hunker down in your home.

 

I have a spray bottle with a bleach solution, 1/4 cup bleach per gal of water), and paper towels in my center consol. Every time I get in the truck I get my hands first, then wipe down the things I touch inside. A good bleach solution used to be 1 Tbsp per gallon, but bleach isn t as strong as it used to be.

 

Skip the bleach and find a better disinfectant. You need a 10 minute contact time for bleach to kill common viruses. It also loses something like 50% of effectiveness in 24 hours.

Bleach is sufficiant. Dont like bleach then use this list: https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2 and suit yourself.

 

Bleach isn’t known to cause cancer all of the other products require 10 minutes cause cancer and have terrible warnings on them

 

I wear a mask at the grocery store and take my hand sanitizer in. I put some in my hands and slather my hands and the high touch areas on the cart. I assume everything is infected so as long as your nose mouth and eyes are covered its business as usual. After I leave the store I put the groceries in the bed of the truck and use plenty of sanitizer before i enter the truck.
Once home groceries go straight to the sink to rinse all bottles, cans, veggies, sealed packaging, etc.
Items in boxes like cereal get removed and box is trashed.
Grocery bags go in trash and lysol the area.
Clothes go into washer, I go into shower and voila.

A few other tips I came up with...
Don't take your whole wallet! Imagine your hands are dirty and you go to pay, spreading germs all over your wallet, and they can be hard to sanitize becuase its either cloth or leather. Only take 1 card you plan on using. 1 credit card is easy to clean with lysol or sanitizer. Hell, you can even wash it with soap and water. Your wallet not so much.

Don't take stuff inside in your pockets. If you have a hide a key leave you key at the truck only to be retrieved after loading and sanitizing.
If it's in your pocket you can easily contaminate it when grabbing for your card or reaching for pocket change. Keys are alittle easier to sanitize but not much without a sink.

I also will grab an item as far back on the shelf as i can. For instance if there is a row of pasta boxes, I grab the one that has least exposure to passing folks. Preferably the second to last on that's sandwiched between two boxes which protects it.

Yup. Stop touching face, eyes, nose etc, before you wash your hand at home with soap and water.

Most people don't know how to put on or take off PPE properly. They touch their faces when wearing a mask because it gets itchy, needs adjusting and they think they are protected. Same thing with taking it and gloves off, the general population is not schooled on how to do it properly.

Wash your fruits and vegetables is another huge one, even before the pandemic. Many just take their knife and cut through the banana, orange, cantaloupe, watermelon and push all the pesticides and germs from people touching them, info the fruit they are going to eat. Meanwhile the slob in his car was scratching his nads before he went in and handled all the fruit and vegetables.

Went into Kroger today most people wearing gloves not masks. Virus doesn’t enter your body through your hands gloves are pointless

I'm not arguing that it isn't sufficient. Just that unless you are changing it out every day with a fresh mix and following the contact time then it isn't actually disinfecting anything.

Most people tend to spray and wipe which while being better than nothing isn't the proper procedure.

 

Initially I did nt see the relivance, but it makes sense now. Although I will say it s an image I don t care to gander at for very long.

Well not totally. Ive got a 10 week old at home so I only go out like once every two weeks for groceries and take keeping her healthy very seriously. It sounds like more than it is once you get it all lined up, but yes... I do feel like Howard Hughes sometimes. The grocery store by my house has those self checkouts mainly and I don't trust people who aren't getting paid to keep those areas clean. Nor do I see many employees cleaning them. We are staying in Santa Clara County which is the main hotspot of California so the risk factors just keep stacking up.



Like somebody on here said, the grocery store is the most exposed most people become during shelter in place.

 

Honestly read the label it'll tell you everything you need to know for your particular product. There's unfortunately no one size fits all approach.

As a former Master of the Custodial Arts the most important thing is to keep the surface damp for the amount of time specified before wiping.

Clorox recommends a 1/2 bleach to a gallon of water with a 5 minute contact time. They also recommend rinsing with clean water to avoid damage from prolonged use.

If you can find them still the Clorox or Lysol wipes are a better alternative for use in your vehicle in my opinion. Self contained and down to a 4 minute contact time without the need to rinse.
