Sys Admin for a University in Louisiana. We began working remotely 3 weeks or so ago.. Best thing is not dealing with Baton Rouge traffic everyday.

    Both...
I use to sit at the plant working on remote switches and wireless, now I'm WFH doing the same. I don't have to go to the plant to do what I need to do.

I've been telecommuting for over 15 years now. Working for a big cloud provider, these last few weeks have been intense, yet highly impressive to see how we manage the growth. Thankful to be in a position to make an impact.

Well, it depends to some degree. Wife has worked healthcare long enough that she's seen some sh*t, as it were. (E.g, her hospital was overflow for 9/11, and she was part of the team that provided care for one of the victims of the DC snipers.) So while she'd largely agree with you, I do know they also train for this sort of thing.

    Yes. LOL To me,

Remotely working - e.g., logging into a server vs. consoling into it.
Working remotely - working @ Ft. Living Room vs working at work

Seems like our IT department has a high turnover rate. Is that typical in the IT world and people jump around more often?

Uplift and Jarvis are great adjustable height desks, and are highly rated for their stability... but are pricey. I've been happy with my Autonomous ErgoChair2 for the last 2 years. Their desks are a little more affordable and seem decent, but I've heard they get pretty wobbly when at full height.

Actually, yes, mechanical. Been working remotely for almost 30 years. Never killed a computer, personal or business. Would Google issues just like you.

The mind boggling part about those email viruses is it's usually some self described genius that opens it. Then there are those who use their computers as if they were their own.
I do nothing personal on the company laptop or phone. Even when I am overseas. Navigation, nothing.

I don't consider myself an "IT guy" but I am a lead software engineer in the B2B subscriptions industry. I get to work from home full-time, make my own hours, and get a Bay Area salary while down in San Diego.

I work IT but not direct support for our students who have gone virtual for the spring semester. Even so, I have never been busier. I think coworkers need to realize we can email/chat back and forth rather than schedule 8+ meetings per day. Between that and everyone being home, I'm not sure I've gotten any work done.

^^^ This. 1,000,000x This. Managers in crisis are less useful then they usually are (not a high bar) and they want to schedule 50 extra meetings to discuss the work their f'ing meetings are preventing everyone from actually doing.

    Figured...

I had one plug in a little netgear hub twice on our network thinking he would get double the bandwidth. he couldn't understand why our switch ports shut down...

Another highly educated engineer tried to static IP something "Because he understands static IPs", thing is, he used the gateway of the data vlan for the IP.

Yeah I had a "Senior" Engineer tell me yesterday that he wanted to get his MAC address of his phone exempted from our corp wireless so he can get an IP from our DNS server.

I closed the ticket with just "no".

Waiting on him to cry demanding to know why...

My degree is in computer science and informational systems, with a focus on windows and linux network administration. I've got several certs. I now work in management for a packaging automation company. I'm returning to college this fall to start working on my MBA in Business Management with a focus on Operations.

I worked in IT for a long time prior to making a move.. Started working for this company where I would support not just our software and networking, but also all other aspects of our equipment; electrical, mechanical, PLC/machine logic, etc. Kind of pushed me in another direction that I ended up really liking.

My whole company is considered "essential" because we quite literally keep supply chains for some of the largest wholesalers and retailers in the country moving. I've been working from home for 3 weeks, but already worked remotely 1-2 days a week prior to this happening.

I'm getting cabin fever like you wouldn't believe. We keep taking long car rides, bike rides, and hikes as a family, but I feel like we haven't associated with any real humans outside of our family for an eternity.

Due to the idiots screwing up, I can't open my Creaform 3D scanner software as it checks version and updates every time. :annoyed: They haven't shut off my data ports yet so the last sentence of my service request has a deadline as to when I will use my personal laptop and transfer data via thumb drive.

I do field support for the DOT here in NC. We have been told to not go into the office unless it’s an actual emergency. Most of our workers have transitioned right home work and the admin teams in HQ have handled it well. I cover 7 counties so I’m remote usually anyway somewhere outside of my office. It was easy for me to transition to home only work.

And this is why I find that engineers have such rough relationship with IT. Instead of working with IT to open up permissions so the software can run in a limited user environment, you guys try to work around IT security making it harder on everyone.

There is no opening of permissions with them. They can't trust a few people and we all pay the price. I don't have time to wait for them to answer a call or service ticket. As a company, if I can't do my job, there is no need for IT. There is no company. My work pays the bills.
