What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

No, not the fabric panel, the whole door panel. I was talking about the torx in the door handle holding door panel to the door itself.

I thought the door panel, and fab panel were plasti-welded together. Meaning you couldn't take out in sections.

I might be wrong.

it comes apart. its just reattaching it that is a little difficult. its doable. but you need to find really short screws. i have some that work. but theyre a bit to long for some spots and poke through.

 

I'm not sure how handy you are with a grinder, or if you've got extra bolts to tinker with.

A trick I learned a long time ago with grinding bolts down is to put a nut on it, and then grind it. When you take the nut off it saves your threads. Tricky to start a new nut on, but it works in a pinch if you didn't round the threads slightly on a grinder. This is super handy for the tiny stuff. I have always used a 6 inch post grinder in the maintenance shop at work.

Just an idea. Any clue how long you need? 10mms of thread?

If you go this route it would save you buying bolts that are too long, and then trying a different pack. I don't know of any place with a bolt bin that will let you return opened packets. Lol

I don't know if this is making any sense to anyone but me. I've spent the last 6 hours 40 feet in the air at the end of a boom lift cutting water lines, and removing old cable trays. Cleaning up the ceilings at work. My head is still in "lift mode."

im going to cut some down if i cant locate anything useable soon.

i have to cut down and measure the shortest point and i'll know for sure.. i might dabble with it tomorrow.we shall see how the Porsche job i have goes (tune up, brakes, blower motor)

If you think you have too many tools, you likely just don't have enough tool storage.

I took my time finishing this rear cab gear storage unit into a sharp and rugged addition to the rig. Couldn't find what I needed online or from other builds, so I went full custom! This thing is built with features I desired such as a pull-out socket tray, "Molle rack," tool accessibility from both sides, convenient removability/transportation, and even access to the stock underseat storage! The back is so much more organized now without cases sliding around the open space from my rear seat delete, and there are many more crannies created for storage. Now I can carry equipment I need to be prepared for the COVID-19 Zombie Apocalypse. Take a gander.








I love when you're building something and keep thinking of ways to make it better; eventually I had to stop myself. Would love to say I nailed this on the first try; however, embarrassingly, what you see is the third attempt to make this work. The first try was so ugly I smashed it into pieces. In the final try, I didn't take as many shortcuts, aiming for accuracy in my measurements, cuts, and assembly.

This was not an expensive project, and all parts were found either at Home Depot or laying around my garage. The "Molle rack" was pulled from the scrapyard for cheap. I used plywood attached by L-brackets and screws (pocket holes weren't an option). All wood was coated in a layer of sealer to enhance longevity by resisting moisture.


For the top portion, I continuously cut away at a cardboard template to achieve a curve that would follow the door/headliner without hitting the roof. Although it's possible to wrestle the whole unit into the cab, I designed the top half to be removable using nutserts and wing nuts.


The build was finished with semi-gloss black paint, anti-friction padding, and basic black carpet. I should have nixed the expensive padding as it's difficult to adhere and the cheaper carpet prevents movement just fine. I went with black because you can't go wrong with black, and eventually I hope the entire interior heads that way like some of you have pulled off in your mods.

Super happy with how the wood grain adds subtle texture, as well as how the sharp lines and corners contrast the otherwise curvey Toyota interior. It's not meant to look stock (which would have been an ambitious goal involving fiberglass and Bondo), but rather become an aesthetic separation.

A note on safety: there is a beefy metal bracket which secures the unit to the stock back seat hook. The passenger seat also helps stabilize. While there's no movement during daily driving, in the event of a rollover crash, I do understand the risk of loose objects in the cab, so someday I could partition the tool area off like you see in service vans, or even some kind of steel reinforcement wouldn't hurt.

Lastly, I'm not too worried about a break-in, as I only have Harbor Freight power tools. Still, I will come back at some point and add a fold-down work tray which hides the tools when closed.

Addendum to my post: Bed lights tied into the High mount cargo light wiring. I've been eye balling replacing high mount anyway. Years of incandescent bulbs melted my reflective housing up top.

This requires advanced thinkering. Hard to do when you've only got a brain stem.

Says its cut-able on the dotted line. Reviews for this product gave me another idea. Engine bay lights. I always struggle positioning my headlight (on my actual head) in a comfortable, functional manner.

Deep cleaning part 2: electric boogaloo is probably going to be put off this weekend.

Work is having me come in with 2nd shift today (4.5 hours early.)

This week has kicked my butt. I think I will rest. This coming week I am supposed to be on days, and a week from today is supposedly our last day before partial lay off. I'll have plenty of time to tinker if this holds true.

Started the 14wa brake conversion this morning. Having some issue getting the brake line to align with the bigger caliper. Size comparison below. Doesn't look like I'll need to do any trimming to the shield either.

Thanks man, now I can't unsee that. I tried it in the past and it chipped up quickly, but I can't recall what I used for paint at the time.

Maybe I'll try it again as I have the original chrome covers laying around.

 

Finally figured out the damn brake line. One side installed and moving onto the other side.

I want to install the steel brake lines I have but those connections are pretty rusted and I don't know I want to mess with them right now. On top of that, I may want to do black instead of red.

Sorry. I think the panda ears are cool as they go with the rest of the black you have. You just have a LOT of white is why I asked.

Things I did to the Tundra today...
Drove it for the first time in a week...ish?
Then promptly covered it in grass/pollen/dust by mowing my yard for the first time in 2020.

That's it. I didn't even put gas in it when I went to the gas station for gas for the mower. Tank is still full.

 

I polished the exterior glass & mirrors with Nu Finish this morning, I'll clean up the interior glass later on.

 

I haven't done a damn thing to mine. I put gas in it? Does that count?

Had them machined myself. Local machinist did both for $60 in about an hr.
