What home improvement work did you do today?

Not a single project and it's driving me crazy! We sold our home in MO and are living in our trailer in WA while looking for a new place. I really miss doing home projects and the 10 pounds I've gained is proof.

 

Did this with a product from Home Depot, comes already “weathered” in white, grey, and multicolor. We went with the grey as it went with the wall color we chose perfectly. We still love it! Construction adhesive and Brad nailed to the wall. Couple hundred dollar project, turned out well

 

oh shit, you have figured out the vast majority of no heat pizza oven calls.

 

Just playing around with the new garage, still need ramps to get in with cars. I took these from in laws basement when we had to move them in with us a couple years ago.

 

I used the same stuff above my cabinets in the theater room. The down side with using pallets or old wood is them not being straight and possibly having chemicals throughout, especially pallet boards. The Home Depot stuff gave the vintage, circular sawn, rustic aged look while maintaining a nice straight 1x4 board.

 

New deck almost complete! Finishing touches this week if the rain will go away long enough!

 

I've heard if you put small bushes around it it'll look bigger.

 

The builder my wife and I are using is making some progress on our new house despite concerns about coronavirus. They've limited work in the house to basically one subcontractor/team at a time for social distancing purposes which I am sure will set us back a bit. They've completed the vinyl siding and the sheetrock was delivered yesterday.

In the mean time, I had a 6" thick, 4,000 PSI concrete pad poured which my new workshop was assembled upon and I've been hauling the stuff my wife and I don't need to be climate controlled from the rental we're currently in up to our property to store in the shop for now.

 

So you have a 2' X 4' drop in LED light left over from a job you did at Olive Garden. So you start cutting into you center console to add a switch and your old eyes can't see shit. Well believe it or not I upgraded the work bench light in less than 10 minutes. Lol

 

I had this large Iron Wolf machine back out at my barn project. This machine is always impressive to watch! It takes out 8” cuts out of solid rock with each pass it makes. It’s drinks diesel fuel like crazy though.

 

It is. The tires alone are about 7’ tall.

Spent a few hours this evening on flooring the transition from kitchen to living room and entry way. Also scribing the boards around the hearth. I swear I cut one board 1736 times before it was right.

Built the lid for the sand box, just need to stain and install the hinges and handles

 

With all this downtime, knocking out some projects around the house. I never have installed any flooring before, but decided to dive in and do it myself vs paying someone.

Product is called Smart Core from Lowes. We went with the Oak Talbot, which is a light to medium gray.
This vinyl tile is great, durable, scratch resistant, and waterproof.
Very easy installation
Tools needed are in the pic below. Essentially it's a kick plate, offset tapping block, which you will use the most and a dead blo hammer or rubber mallet.
You'll need a bunch of 1/4" shims to keep tile off base board, don't worry your 3/4 round will cover it no problem.
Not bad for a Weldor huh.
This was such an easy installation that I'm gonna do our bedrms with it vs carpet, and save me $$$$.

 

Well I had a fun experience this morning.
Have a basement fireplace and a main level fireplace. We haven’t ever used the basement one. Occasionally use the main level one but lately have gotten a bit of smoke down in the basement when doing so.
SO smart me goes to the roof because the previous owners always had a ‘round aggregate stepping stone’ as a cap for the basement fireplace chimney top.
Yesterday I replace the stepping stone with an actual chimney grate/cap.
This morning we light a fire on main level and after a while I go to check downstairs and walking into a mess of smoke. So much draft coming into the room from the basement fireplace chimney! Argh!
Put the fire out upstairs and inspect. The reason the basement damper doesn’t close all the way is because it was never setup to close all the way.
This was after I cut down the lever because it was too long and you can see where they scraped the firebrick to try and get more throw distance. Idiots.
I then cleaned and made sure it closed all the way but since we never use the thing I sealed that summabitch up with some insulation foam.
will wait a day or so and try a fire upstairs again. Such a mess and got soot all over me. I hate fireplaces unless there natural gas with fake logs. But those are ugly

 

I just did a kitchen faucet replacement a couple of days ago, we've had an ugly expensive Delta on that I installed when I built our home and it has been a disappointment for many years but now we have a really good Moen in place, but at 77 years, it kicked my butt crawling under the sink to do the work, hopefully this new one will last the rest of our lives and beyond.

 

Looks awesome man! I'm looking to do the same for a couple rooms in my house. Did you use the underlay mat stuff? Can you explain the 1/4" shims? Not sure I'm following how to use those.

 

I've done both the underlayment mat and used the flooring with the underlayment attached. I'd use the attached every time.

On the spacers you need to leave an expansion gap around the perimeter of the floor to either be covered by the baseboard if you're removing it before install or covering it with 1/4 round if you're not removing the baseboard.

 

You do not need underlayment. It will sit right on your ply board floor. The 1/4" shims are to keep your tile off the baseboard or wall for expansion. The hardest part or the pita part was pulling up all the staples that held the padding.

 

Thanks guys. One more question - can I install one of these floating floors in a basement with concrete floors? Or will that be a huge pain?

 

I’ve wondered that as well but kept thinking that the concrete will transfer so much cold that I would prefer carpet in the basement unless it’s a bathroom, then it’s a heated floor for me

 

As long as the slab is consistent and level, concrete floors should take the flooring just fine.

You may want a more robust underlayment that would offer better thermal insulation and an added vapor barrier vs putting the planks right on the slab. Just my $.02.

 

Anyone have experience running a gas line? Like to install some gas lanterns on the outside of my garage? We already have natural gas for most of our appliances so it really just needs to be a T off of one of the existing lines I think. Not sure how all that works.
