New wheels and tires

I decided to change up my wheel and tire setup. My previous setup was 20x9 XD Fury wheels wrapped in 305/55/20 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. I liked the setup just fine, but after getting my Icon 2.5 3” lift I knew I wanted to get some 35s.


I struggled with deciding if I wanted to stick with 20” wheels or get smaller wheels to have more rubber for off-roading. I searched wheels for a few weeks, going back and forth. I landed on 17” Method 314s in gloss titanium. I liked the style and it didn’t have the fake bead locks, I was getting sick of seeing a majority of the wheels having the fake bead lock look.


the other problem I had was deciding on what tires to run. I had read lots of reviews on the Falken Wildpeak A/T 3W and decided to try those out. I went with 315/70/17. It turned out alright, just wasn’t sold on the look of the tires.





So after having driven on the Falkens for a week, I didn’t like them. I’m not sure if the tread was the reason, but they didn’t feel very stable at higher speeds. They have taller tread depth in the all terrain/ hybrid tire segment, which is why I gave them a shot. I decided to go back to the Nitto Ridge Grapplers. They just look more aggressive and in my opinion drove better than the Faklens.

Thanks. I had a crewmax before, unfortunately, they don’t make a longer bed with the crewmax. Since the bigger bed is a priority, I had to make the sacrifice. I miss the roll down rear window and massive rear seats.

Is the ride quality much improved for the 20" wheel set up?

Either way I’ll answer both ways.

the 20” wheel setup was great for going fast around corners and on the highway. It felt planted and response is quick. The one noticeable thing I didn’t like about them is on roads with potholes and speed bumps it’s harsh.

With the 17” wheel setup, it’s much more forgiving on bad roads with pot holes and on speed bumps. The trade off of course is that the ride in the corners and response is slightly decreased.

yes, i meant as far as highway riding with bumps and potholes and such. I am considering going 17's or 18s as well from 20s. I just find the ride to be too harsh.

 

Those look hawt! And a plus for them not being fake bead locks. Haha

So in terms of rubbing, it’s a bit tricky. So The shop I go to, the alignment guy always helps me get what I’m looking for. So he ran the caster as far forward without sacrificing the camber. So I’m sitting at 3.7 caster and .5 camber. That helps me to clear the body mount for the most part. If I encounter a bump while turning it’ll probably hit. I’m going to get the chop done soon, I just didn’t want to ruin new tires for the time being. As for the front liner, I have the coach builders bumper spacers that I’m going to install soon that should give me another .5” of clearance.

 

You will notice the difference. I noticed immediately after I got them put on. The best part is speed bumps don’t feel harsh anymore. I live in an area with poor roads and I doubt I’ll go with bigger wheels again, at least on my truck. I think an 18” will do the job for you if you don’t intend on off-roading. On my 17” I had clearance issues on the front. The balance weights were clipping my brake calipers on the front, so they had to move the weights.

I want one of those damn things, not sure if I want the full bumper or just the center one they got to add a winch.

it’s always good to have a tech that understands what’s you need. I miss that lifetime alignment from firestone, unfortunately they’re isn’t one close to me...

Nevermind they are working now, nice setup. I’m planning on a similar combo. What’s your opinion on the 0 offset, a lot of guys on here say it’s too aggressive. I’ve been looking around for a tundra with that setup local but most are running stock wheels or 20s

^ This. I didn't even think twice to look at the weights before I test drove after mounting. As soon as I rolled 3ft I heard clicking and knew I would need to rebalance the fronts

 

Haha, you’re more aware than I. I drove about a mile down the road thinking it was tire stickers. When the sound didn’t go away I knew what it was.
