You know the story, another tundra owner that is not happy with the sound of the Factory JBL system. Was considering a full system replacement including headunit, as this is what I did with my first Tundra, a 2011. But, really did not want to open up the dash. so after reading about what Cfincke , mongo7, dochanson and others did, i decided to go for it.

Ordered a DSR1, amp, sub, box, and front and rear component speakers.

good project during quarantine for me..

amp wiring kit arrived today, so I got the power supply ready to go. Tucked it under the seat until the rest of the parts arrive. Don't worry, there is no fuse in the holder!

Thanks for sharing your installs and providing the inspiration!

I'll keep ya posted. Planning to install sound deadening mat on the back wall tomorrow.

    cheers!

Just one amp and one sub for this build.

    From crutchfield:

    Amp - Pioneer GM-DX975 5 channel
    Sub -Pioneer TS-SW3002S4 Shallow-mount
    Front - Polk Audio DB 6502 6 1/2” components
    Rear - Pioneer TS-A652C 6 1/2” components

Also ordered a sealed sub box and sound deafening from Amazon.

What box did you go with? Hope it’s not:
    https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-UDSW...er+truck+subwoofer+box&qid=1584902362&sr=8-13

That the one I bought and there is maybe 3/8” between the front of the sub and the seat frame. The Xmax on the sub is 1/4” so I’m looking at a couple whiskers between my sub the the seat frame.

    Edit:
I’m going to edit this post. If this box and sub are placed behind the passenger seat (instead of the driver like where I put it), it fits really well. Good sounding combo too

No, I ordered the Atrend 12PS B box. It is 5” deep and has enough volume for the woofer! I suspect it will be snug at the top of the box, it is supposed to arrive today, so I’ll have a look. I am planning to take out the back seats and sound dampen the back wall so easy enough to check fit.

Why not keep all your speakers the same, as to keep timbre ?

    that was the initial plan.

started out with JL Audio amp, but could not find a box for their shallow sub, and did not want to spend $800 for a pair of c5's, so starting looking at other brands. This led to the the shallow mount pioneer woofer...found a nicely matched pioneer amp, so started looking for pioneer speakers, but alas, could not find a pair that fit the front doors, so that is why the polk audio.

Crutchfield has a great return policy so if I am not happy with the Polk Audio's I will return them.

Any suggestions for pioneer component speakers for front door?

Used pioneer every since i was a kid, i currently have polks in my camry with a sub and amp i like them a lot but they can be a little bright. I dont know what Im going to do with my tunny. As yo know toyota really installed the best system they could find. I wish I could help you as far as components for your front doors... I really need to start looking and figuring things out with the truck.

So, hit the first hiccup. The box I ordered does not fit behind the seat. The search for a box resumes.
But I have the seats out and will sound deaden the back wall and floor, so still making progress!

this is going to be the slowest stereo upgrade ever! amp, speakers, and one sub arrived today, but have not started putting them in yet. going to finish soundproofing back first. finished back floor today!

going to install dsr1 and amp tomorrow and connect to factory speakers.

then one by one I will sound proof the doors and install speakers, so another 5 days until new speakers are wired in...

I know, I was thinking that too. The ESP metal box makes it a pain to remove the back seats without help.

So, I was going solder and shrink wrapped the maestro aT03 to the DSR1 harness, but, ahhh, now I’m confused. It looks like I don’t need to use the input harness that came with the DSR1. Does that mean the 8 inputs in the aT03 harness are only needed if I use the factory speaker wire? If that is the case then i only need to connect the blue amp on wire!

You do not need to use that harness on the right with the RCA's (the one sitting on the DSR1). All you need is the TO3 harness, the harness that is on the right out of the picture and the separate double-ended RCAs.

On the TO3 harness - the three white harness connectors plug into the three factory harnesses. The two larger black harness connectors on the TO3 (Small black ones are not used) connect to the input side of the DSR1. The harness on the right out of the picture plugs into the output side of the DSR1 and you run RCAs from that to the amp. The open-ended stereo wires on the TO3 harness get plugged into the output channels of the amp according to the chart provided with the DSR1 (labeled Input 1, 2, 3, etc). Lastly, Power, ground and remote on wire (small blue one I believe) get plugged into amp and you are done. Every harness is specific for where it plugs in - you can't do it wrong.

PWMDMD, thanks for clarifying. it really is a plug & play, I was not sure about the two small black connects on the T03. I was doing this on the kitchen table so that I could layout the amp/dsr1/wiring for the purpose of making a rack for everything to fit nicely on. i guess I was thinking it would more involved.

I am going to plug it in at lunch today and wire the amp to the factory speakers, then replace speakers one by one....

could not have tackled this job without the help of everyone on the forum!
    :proposetoast:
    Thanks!!

Are you going to run the center channel and dash speakers? I wonder what the ohm load on the amp would be if you ran them in parallel with the front channels... I see lots of guys doing this.

I had not planned on it. I was just going to disconnect them. BTW, I am planning to run new speaker wires, just going to use the existing factory wire to power the factory speakers.

Agreed. I've been following both your threads and some of the others here. I'm planning on installing the dsr-1 and JBL Amp/Sub combo this weekend and this has helped a ton.

    Wired for sound.

DSR1 and pioneer amp installed and connected to all factory speakers using factory wiring. It’s raining so I can’t take door panels off and install new speakers. :(

but, interestingly enough, the factory speakers sound much better being powered by the new amp. Seems to me the factory amp is the Achilles heal of the JBL sound system.

clarity has improved and sound stage is so much better with DSR1 and pioneer amp. And I haven’t even tuned it yet. Just set crossover to 80 and gain at normal. I’ll tune it when the new speakers and sub are installed.

DSR1 seems to be fully functional, Bluetooth connected, perfect tune App functioning.

so, here’s a question: can I run the dash speakers in parallel with the door speakers? I could connect both the front left door and front left dash to the same amp output. I tried this while connecting speakers and it seemed like it would be ok. That would just leave the dash centre speaker with a channel to connect to.

Can hardly wait to replace speakers and install the sub box. It is on a fed ex truck on its way from Georgia and scheduled for delivery April 3. Hopefully there are no issues crossing the border into Canada.

Yep absolutely parallel the dash and door speakers. That's what I did today. It was a little bright so I turned down the gain some on the amp for the front channel. Works perfect.
