Driver door check.

New owner, new transmission, new at being ripped a new one. Anyone been successful at putting the door back together after a major wind gust rips the door apart and shreds the metal holding the door check in place? I tried today to reinforce both sideS of the cheap Chinese steel door panel But broke the bolts in the door check.

 

Pics. I had the same thing happen but I think it actually bent the metal holding the door hinge. Let's have a peek at the damage so we can assess what's going on.

 

Have had to do weld repairs - one that involved cutting the whole thing out to repair with welds and the weld back into place - on Honda's but not my Tundra.

I removed the door panel, removed the door check, and cleaned up the sheared metal. It was this way when I bought it but I figured a quick fix would be to wedge sheet metal on each side of the door. That didn’t work because the bolts on the door check are weak metal. I broke the bolts. So now I am in the process of tearing the check apart, prying off the busted bolts, welding in new bolts, putting it all back together again.

Ground down bolt head and welded into the housing.

 

Bits and pieces then reassembled.

 

Bolted in. Door sheet metal sandwiched between mild steel with the inside welded. New stronger bolts held.

 

Door stays open without bungee cords now. T30 and 2 Phillips put the door card back in.

Any time you weld on the vehicle, disconnect the battery to save the electronics. I’m expecting a high idle until the computer relearns my 90 year old driving habits.

 

So what is it in these door checks/stays that wears out/breaks and keeps them from having tension?

 

Nothing that I could see on the inside of the check was worn out. There’s two metal rollers and two springs separated by a plastic spacer inside the door check mechanism. My door was previously damaged from a wind gust that ripped the door sheet metal. The check wasn’t attached to anything. I tried to sandwich two pieces of sheet metal to close up the hole made by Mother Nature and the mild steel bolts sheared off with the pressure I put on them. The rubber gasket at the end of the check was worn but still serviceable.

 

Was your check/stay functioning properly when it was damaged?

 

I purchased the truck last month. It was damaged Before I came into possession. I had hoped the fix would be as simple as it was. I believe it was bent by the event but I straightened things out so it functioned properly. It looked like it was functioning properly but not being attached to the door made it impossible to know until I put everything back together. The bolts were attached to the door check, when the bolts snapped the only thing to do was take it apart so I could weld new bolts into the housing.
