Did the engine get hot?

 

I bought this truck used. It hasn’t overheated while I’ve owned it. The carfax shows that both the head gaskets were replaced shortly before I bought it. Was losing coolant, had a very bad timing cover oil leak and was misfiring on cold starts.

 

Oh so they fixed it but the block was F’d and now your having issues again. Damn that sucks I had never heard of the block warp issue. Always figured you could just machine it and be good to go.

 

I think the block gave before the head because of the block's structure. There's not much meat on the block compared to the heads.

 

Modern engines come with VVT which is more sensitive to changes in angle and distance of the cams. I’m sure old 22res could be resurfaced a couple times and no problems because all you need to do is tighten up the slack in the timing chain/belt

 

Hi guys. I have a question. Whenever I checked the coolant, the radiator was always full but the expansion tank was losing coolant very slowly. My expansion tank got super low and I saw it sipping the last few table spoons of coolant Before I opened up the motor. I forgot to mention this earlier, the timing marks on the the cams looked retarded about 1/2 a tooth. My issues were that engine would misfire mostly in the morning on a cold idle but also at low speeds or when the vehicle is stopped. Acceleration also felt sluggish but would feel better if I unplugged the battery and reset the computer. The chain tensioner had little rings to suggest there was some slack in the chain and the sprockets.

 

sounds like a blown head gasket to me. the little rings on the tensioner are normal.. they ratchet out, if the rings were way out on the travel of the tensioner then you had a stretched chain. Theres been a few 03-06 4.0s coming in the past few years with head gasket issues that had the same symptoms youve got

 

My original hot compression test numbers were as follows:

#1 - 175psi
#3 - 160psi
#5 - 165psi

#2 - 165psi
#4 - 160psi
#6 - 165psi

I kind of wish I could have done a leak down and exhaust gas test.

not bad numbers. But the cold misfire is lean towards doing a cold leak down test. Most of the time when the gasket starts leaking on these they only do it cold.
