What engine oil/filter combo are you guys using?

I've got 200k miles. I was thinking Mobile One Synthetic High Millage w/ a Toyota Filter.

If theres already a thread can someone link for me? I havent been able to find one.

 

i run mobil extended performance with a toyota D3 filter.
i see no need for the high mileage stuff in a toyota.

193k on the ticker.

01 and 02 taco get the same treatment.

06 avalon and 06 corolla do too. But the corolla has about 800-850k on it these days

 

Currently, I buy the cheapest name brand synthetic blend from Walmart or Amazon Basics synthetic blend. I’m using a Toyota filter.

 

Whats the difference between High Millaege and Extended Performance?

Exactly this. With 168k.

 

High Mileage tends to have more additives to recondition old seals and boasts higher levels of zinc. Works to slow weeps.

Extended performance has more PAO waxes for slipperiness. I’ve used this and it leaked past my seals causing weeps (cams and crank). Costs about 10% more.

Mobil does makes an Extended Performance High Mileage which combines the two (15% more). I’ve done my own blending with 5 quarts HM with 1.5 quarts EP when I had extra to use up.

May help with leaks. But my 4.7 is leak free as well as the two Tacoma’s and Avalon. The corolla has a leaky head gasket (back Of the engine gets oil soaked below the head) No noticed change when I tried the high mileage mobil

 

I didn't know that!!! I just thought "high mileage" and "synthetic blend" were one in the same. I guess they are except one has additives...good to know!

They all have additives which differ according to the type of service the engines require. Check out Mobils site and read up. When my cats go bad I’ll start running pure racing oils with huge amounts of zinc.

 

The zinc isn’t really needed. It’s not a flat tappet like the ol cam in block setups. It is a flat bucket, but forwhatever reason they don’t wear at all. The 01 taco didn’t get a valve adjustment till 275k. Only 1 valve was right, and the cams were looking like new!
When I had the cams out of the tundra with 191k they also looked damn near new. And no valves were out of spec

these Toyota bucket style engines run forever and are designed to need very little oil

 

Have any of you ever run your mobil 1 over to blackstone labs for oil analysis after 5k + miles? If so, care to share?

I generally run Mobil 1 Extended and Mobil 1 or Toyota filter but I haven't had a sample sent over to blackstone for the Tundra yet.

Daily driver. A fairly balanced mix of short trips under 5 miles, highway, and towing.

I’ve been running the FRAM ultra synthetic filters since I read this guide a few years ago. Xtended guard is the old name that was replaced by Ultra Synthetic. The part numbers stayed the same.

Take it to dealer every 10K for oil and filter and follow the recommendations for other items. The million mile plus Tundra had exclusively (and documented) dealer service history including recommended oil changes with dealer oil and OEM filters. The engineers tore the motor down, documented with pictures and observed no substantial wear on any of the internals. Can’t do any better than that. And by that standard, your Tundra isn’t even a high mileage truck yet! It’s not even 1/4 of the way to broken in!

There are lots of debates and posting on zinc, ZDDP, and phosphorus at BITOG, Hemmings, and others so I will not kick the hornets next here. The modern SN rated oils only have 600-800 ppm of zinc. Our first gens were designed to operate with SJ rated oils. SJ rated oils have 1,000-1,200 ppm of zinc. I wasn't really searching for specific zinc oils, my Tundra is a weekend/vacation truck, only 6k-8k miles per year. I didn't want to run a synthetic 12-18 months, nor did I want to be dumping a synthetic into the drain pan every 6 months either. So this seemed like a best of both solution.

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic High Mileage 0W-20 (5W-20 has also been used in the past since my 08 Tundra allows for either weight, I almost always run 0W-20 now though)

Might switch to the Toyota filter but Mobil 1 filters have been on this truck since about 80k miles and they've given me zero issues over the years.

My Tundra is at 222k+ miles so far and I'll be doing an oil change again here within the next couple months.
I plan to send off a sample for a Blackstone Laboratories analysis, although it will be at about a 10,000 mile oil change interval. I'll post once I get it back.

 

In many instances I would agree with dealer service but I wouldn't go dealer for oil. Many dealerships buy oil in bulk from a local refinery. That oil can be different from this little tanker to the next.
I have started using Liquimoly oil with a OEM filter, cerratec additive every 4th oil change. My engine has been a lot smoother

I think next oil change, I’ll probably swap to OEM filters since they are about the same price as the Napa ones I’m getting. Kind of ‘why not’ thing.

I have and do love Rotella and they recently came out with a 5w-30 gas motor specstfic synthetic oil that seems attractive.

Only reason I use Napa is because we get it in bulk at work so it’s available but I’m still considering switching to Rotella. They make some damn good oil and I use it in my bikes, trucks or anything else it that may or may not be applicable.

 

I’m the first one to say I used to use crazy expensive oils in the past. Royal Purple specifically. I also used synthetic element filters. But the fact remains, and was pointed out many times, no one has produced a Blackstone (or other) report that the 10K interval on factory spec (dealer) oil and OEM filters isn’t just good enough, it’s a conservative interval and the TBN of the oil has always been fine in all the Blackstone analyses. So sure you can change it more frequently, use different oil, etc but it isn’t any better for the motor based on the actual million mile Tundra engine tear down... all of the internals were perfect using only dealer services and recommended intervals as well

I use Amsoil 5W-30 Signature series synthetic, with the Amsoil filter, or a Napa Gold filter. I have used Amsoil in all my vehicles for almost 30 years.
