I remember the one that flattened an elementary school in Plainfield, IL. But I really can't recall an actual touch-down in IN up there ever. Being east and south of the Lake, but very close is nice. It is a great weather buffer.
In 2008, we had a healthy twister run right down 38th street in Indy that caused some serious destruction. It missed our house by ~2 miles. I was glad to have avoided that one.

Still rather have twisters than hurricanes.

10 times over id rather deal with tornados. ive been around for a hurricane. that shit aint fun.

all in all Indiana (NWI) has very little in terms of bad weather.. you just have to put up with boringness and idiots, one day i'll make the move further south into Indiana

Hurricanes are common on Fantasy Island. They are easy to deal with because they move so slowly you can get away prior to landfall. A tornado catches one off guard.

Get some business insurance. Open an LLC and then look into the cost and you’ll quickly decide maybe its cost prohibitive.

Paying personal property taxes every year on the same tools you bought and paid for 25 years ago gets old in my commie state.

Between taxes and insurance you could buy your tools 3 times over in a long run. Conclusion: Don’t sweat it, but put some money aside in your personal account just in case of disaster.

Oh I’ve got $ set aside just in case. And most of the tools
Are in the rooms with the least worry of fire. It’s really just natural disasters that would hurt.

House is on the highest point in the county too, so flooding is non existent

Well, I'm committing a cardinal sin soon. I got a new job requiring us to move. We're selling our house and renting because I don't trust the market.

But here is my badass 23x23' garage that I will miss the most.

Taking pics from my recliner. I could turn on the lights, but the switch is too far away. Spend more time out here than in my house, especially in the summer.20200313_180508.jpg 20200313_180541_001.jpg

We're just moving from Knoxville suburbs into Knoxville proper. My new job is 40 miles each way so that won't fly. We're going to rent in Knoxville while we wait to see what this virus has in store for our economy.

I know you and I both want to move out west. It will be a few more years for me. I'm almost 32, shooting for 35-36.

Been debating on whether I should start a “What’s your other hobby” thread but it seemed like this would fit in here pretty well. I’ve set my very tiny two car garage up to accommodate both the DC and the wife’s compact suv should severe weather arise.

The main thing I do in this garage is likely gonna be a crowd favorite. I brew beer. And I’m not talking about on a Costco holiday kit either. At any point, I usually have 4 rotating beers on tap.

I’ve built a fully automated 240v electric brewery that I can run entirely with the flip of some switches. And as I’m digging through pictures, I realize I haven’t really taken any since 2017. I may update this tomorrow.

Dude fuck that. I grew up in North east Texas and throughout elementary I can’t count the times my grandma stuffed me under a mattress.

As an adult I’ve Kinda lived to be ultra prepared for anything but still have this irrational fear of naders.

About a year ago the NWS confirmed that an F4 wiped out an entire neighborhood about 3-4 miles from me. My wife and I slept through the entire thing with no weather alerts or sirens. This completely cemented that my fear is not irrational.

Imma go out on a limb and say the DW pic. :D

And you're only 3 hours away? And haven't invited me? Offended noises intensify...:D

100% serious. My whole life I've been in Amarillo and have never seen a tornado. Multiple severe storms and take shelters, but no actual twisters.

I dont see how yall prefer tornadoes to hurricanes! those things terrify me. at least with a hurricane, you have time to prepare. with a tornado, you have no clue until its too late it seems. ill take my hurricanes all day.

As promised, pics of mine. We'll call these the "before" pics.

    Basement shop.

I have a two story, "two car" garage. That's in quotes because a car hasn't seen the inside of that garage in years!

Downstairs of the garage - LEFT.

    Downstairs of garage - RIGHT

    Upstairs shop.

Lots of space, and tons of potential. I just gotta clear some crap out!

Reason why I say I prefer hurricanes. They take days to reach where they are going along with all the media hype (see Jim ‘Cantaloupe’).
