Just walk around town and key up a few times. Wait one hour. If no sound of helos in distance approaching or whooshing sound from sky is heard, you “should” be okay.

Yes, it's totally harder to learn when you get older. At least that's what my friends tell me.

I ended up just using a 40 amp relay that cuts power to my Rig Runner when the ignition is off. Seems to be working just fine and a 5 pack of them was less than $20 on Amazon. I could see some applications for the APO3 but not sure my radio is one of them.

You guys are the friggin devil. Not two weeks ago I saw this damn thread and now I have my first handheld. Going to go get my technicians license in about a week and a half. It all started with, “what if my wife can’t get cell service and needs help while out walking the dog on one of her many hikes?“

Thank for all the great info on a serious note.

Anybody pop a 3/4" hole to put a NMO mount on a Tundra with a sunroof? I'm kinda half shopping for a new Tundra and want to upgrade to a Platinum and everyone I've seen has the sunroof.

Finally got my setup all installed.
I mounted mine on the hood and the radio works great. I've got a 2010.

Can anyone recommend a good fender or hood mount for a 2018? Would love a simple NMO fender mount like I had on the Tacoma. Just run a simple 2M whip.

    CQ CQ.

I am getting ready to finally do my radio instal and have a request for everyone to help me out on antenna selections and antenna mounting options. (Please see photos for visual reference)

Due to my Leitner designs roof rack I would like to mount my antenna between the rear window on the left side between the black rack bar and the window. Secondary option is drill the roof and do an NMO roof mount but it getting ripped out one day due to a tree branch or whatever worries me. The Breedlove bed rail mount seems to be the best choice so far.
    https://breedlovemounts.com/store/ols/products/front-bed-rail-bracket-4-inches-above-the-bed-rail

I am running an ICOM 2730A duel band radio. I have my technician license and will be on the 70cm/2cm band and GMRS (yes I have that license also).

The white truck pic is what I am imagining in my head as the best set up for me but I want to ensure I get the right antenna and best possible mounting solution. Sadly, when I call different places I get conflicting answers. So I defer to people with the same truck who do the same thing. Thanks so much for any assistance.

Do you know who owns that white truck and have you tried asking them what they used?
It is hard to tell from the pictures if the Breedlove mount will allow an antenna to clear the rack. Have you considered welding a tab onto the rack for an NMO mount? That is what I did when I had a bedrack and it worked out ok. You could also use an L bracket on the bed rail with a 5/8" hole for an NMO mount, but like the Breedlove mount you'll have to be careful with the x and y positioning to clear the rack and braces that run down.
That antenna placement isn't great for the radiation pattern, the cab and rack are going to be blocking a lot. I'm going to be doing something similar, but I just wanted to ensure you knew that when making your decision. Someone posted a diagram in this thread or another ham thread.
As for the antenna, since you are going to be operating on GMRS in addition to 70cm and 2M, look for a broad-band antenna like the Comet 2x4.

I just ordered that antenna. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I found that picture online of the white Tundra but have no clue who owns or operates it. I have seen the diagram you are speaking of and am okay with some dB loss. The antenna is 40 inches high and will be about 20 inches high above the roof and rack. Thank you so much for your assistance @GodlessPro .

@P-Factor, that mount is over $400 and no amount of dB gain/loss is worth that for me in my Tundra. Easter gift?

My friend has a Rabo fabrication bed rail mount he is letting me play with. If you see the attached photos, I am wondering if I mount it directly in the middle of the truck bed on the rail, if that would be sufficient? If it hits anything high “on accident”, it will just hit the crossbar of my rack system or be stopped by the plastic brake light cover. It’s only about two feet to the right or left of being mounted in either of the front corners of the truck bed. Thoughts?
