    need to find an engine for my 05 Tundra 4.0 V6. I want to avoid another 05 year and possibly 06 year engine. Does anyone know what model year engines from possibly Tacoma and 4Runner that are compatible, hopefully a newer engine will still run and not have the defective HG in them.

    I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you but, I found your post interesting. I've only ever heard people singing the praises of the 05-06 VVT-i engines over the earlier models.

    05 and possibly the early 06 engines had faulty head gaskets. I want to put possibly a 2010-2011 engine from a Tacoma in the tundra if possible, much newer and less miles and less likely to have a HG issue again.

    I’ve also herd of/seen it myself, if you have to new motor out, check/repair the timing cover leak. I guess it another common but not detrimental issue the 4.0l is known for. I think it’s a sealing issue of mating surfaces between the heads and the block, on the passenger side. They all leak oil there behind the timing cover inspection plate.

    People seem to sing the praises of the v8. I don't see much besides liking the mpg and timing chain on the v6.

    Up to a 2015 Tacoma engine should work with swapping parts over. The engine itself in tacos didn’t change till 16.


    4runners I believe 10 and up won’t fit.

    My concern is of electronics incompatibility. From my understanding the 03-04 4runner 4.0 had a different style VVT phaser and camshaft sensor setup, I was just want to be sure before I drop $2k on a used motor.

    I would avoid 06 and older. They are known to have head gasket issues. You should be safe to use a 07-15 taco motor

    I had suspected, and have now confirmed through parts research for you, that the ECM for virtually every MY 4.0L engine is a unique part number. My opinion is any swap to another MY engine should anticipate needing to buy the engine and ECM/engine wiring harness from the same donor vehicle as a bundle. Compatibility of a later MY ECM with the rest of the vehicle could still be an issue.

    This is what concerns me but since the 4.0s should all be identical mechanically, shouldn’t the Tundra ecm just plug in? From my understand single VVT 05-11 Tacoma engines are all identical mechanically and can all be interchanged amongst Tacoma’s at least, and 12-15 with the SAIS can be modded to work on older trucks. What I did find was 03-04 4.0s in 4runners had older style cam phaser(tri-star) and 2 wires for the camshaft position sensor. An 07 FJ engine was put in an 04 4Runner and the engine would crank but not start. My 05 has a the newer style cam phaser with a 3-wire CPS setup, which is on 05-11 Tacoma’s.

    When I did a 3.4 swap I remember the ecms did seem to change a lot. I'm not sure that matters much with a new engine though. Couldn't you just swap all the wiring from the old engine back over? If the tb or something is different then maybe just use your old one?

    I took the head off my engine today. There was no obvious sign of a head gasket leak, the cylinder head checked very nicely flat and no obvious cracks but the block did not pass the warpage test. Block maximum warpage is 0.0020 and I could pass a 0.0025 feeler gauge under the straight edge.

    I spent $50 the head-bolt driver and $85 for the precision straight edge to remove the head bolts. Can’t really return those anymore.

    Negative, service manual states to replace cylinder block if out of spec. Does not even give a spec for a resurface repair because it is not recommended. Potential timing issues could result because the angle between the crank and cams will change.

    You “could” resurface. But you’ll need to run a thicker head gasket. If you don’t timing will be wrong

    Are you sure that the surface was perfectly clean when you checked it. .0005” out of tolerance is a pretty dang small amount. I would make sure that all of the gasket material was removed and that there was no raised carbon around the edge of the cylinder holes.

    Don’t take this wrong and it may just be the picture but it does not look as clean and I would want it before I made a decision about it being out of tolerance.

    I don't think a thicker head gasket is available. I also don't think you can use two head gaskets like in the old days.

    No. No double gasket with modern MLS gaskets.


    I believe thicker gaskets are out there, but I may be wrong.

    There are custom made head gaskets available. Those can only be made so thick though. The gasket can’t really be an extension of the combustion chamber.

    Minimal amount of extra gasket is fine. Machining yours would take next to nothing. But honestly I’d just locate a newer motor with lower mileage. These early 4.0s are known to have head gasket issues

    I made sure to scrape the edge of the cylinder bores for carbon. The yellow stuff is stains from oil. I can try again, but the feeler gauge goes underneath the straight edge right in between the pistons. It did not go under on the outside edges of the clunker block. I’ll
