What rear bumper is that?

 

Looks like a Expedition One bumper. Can you exit through the tent incase one of the swingouts gets closed while you are inside effectively locking you in?

 

Thanks! I'll just go on record by saying it was a lot, but that I had pleeenty of time to save up cash in the 15 months i waited for it.

Those things were painfully expensive but they are so bomber and leak-proof. I'm super happy with them!

Yep this is indeed the Expedition One dual swing-out Tundra bumper. It looks great and it works quite well, but I would not do business with Expedition One again. The install is horribly complicated, the baja design lights they package with the bumper have no mounting option so you have to fab one up from scratch, they sent me the wrong fastener kit twice so I ended up have to spread the install out over three weekends, the latches to open/close are so hard to operate that you have to use your foot to give it enough pressure to close, and they were fairly nonapologetic the for the whole thing, like that's what I get for trying to DIY rather than paying an installer to do it. The truck shop near me who was training to become a authorized installer didn't end up offering the bumpers, probably because they're such a bitch to install!

The only way the swingout could close while I was inside is if someone maliciously undid pin that holds it in the open position, and swung it closed, and kicked the latch closed to lock it in place. It's not like the breeze would just blow it shut and it would latch and I'd be screwed. (I wish the latches worked that smoothly!) I think that was your question, right? But otherwise if someone locks me in in that fashion, while I could make it out of the rear tent window and drop down probably without killing myself, I would probably just open one of the side windows on the lower part and hop out of that instead.

Unfortunately the shelter-in-place went into effect the day I got home with it, so I haven't been able to camp in it yet. But yeah I'm pretty excited to do a maiden voyage.

I don't want permanent camping fixtures installed in the truck bed. If I had wanted that, I would have just bought an RV. I prefer to have my gear in totes, which I can either keep inside (for shitty weather / mosquito death), or more typically, pull outside (or drag to the edge of the tailgate) so that I can sit in my camp chair under the awning until it's time to go to bed.

Once I figure a good position for the fridge, I'll probably bolt in some low-profile tie-downs, because that thing is crazy heavy and really expensive and I want to be careful with it. And I might install a heater in the stock spare tire location with a couple of ducts coming in, and I haven't figured out a good water system yet. But I'm trying as much as possible NOT to have things in the bed of the truck, which I cannot easily remove.

 

Makes complete sense. We plan on doing the same as far as keeping the bed clear of clutter goes.

 

Wow I don't hear of too many people doing this. It amazes me how many people bolt down a plywood floor and then build up cabinets and drawers and dressers and bureaus and shit. I dunno ... there's some really sweet gear for this out there, and it tempts me, but that's just not my lifestyle.

My girl has a EuroVan, which has the whole shebang inside ... fridge, stove, sink, kitchen table, bed, storage, heater, etc. We can roll up on a campsite for the evening, and leave the van only for bathroom breaks (I still haven't convinced her to let me just piss out the window). It's nice, especially if it's shitty weather or mosquito death outside, and kind of romantic just chilling inside a little van ... but the one thing I don't like about #vanlife is that I don't end up being outside. It's so convenient to just huddle in the van, that I miss the opportunity to sit and read outside, listen to birdsong, watch for critters, hike up the knoll to watch the sun set, enjoy the breeze, take dinner, go for an evening walk, etc. Instead I find myself doing all this through the van window, and while my back and I no longer enjoy the everything-on-the-dirt aspect of car camping like I did in my 20s, I'm not old enough yet to settle for RV life.

 

I love your camper. Vagabond makes some awesome stuff for sure. I got to check out the drifter model they make for the Tacoma and it was impressive. They were at the top of my list on my new truck, but I ended up going with AT Overland this go round.

I love those frontrunner glass windoors too. They make accessing the bed a breeze.

 

Now that I've finally had a chance to camp in the Nomad without violating the various shelter in place rules, I wanted to put a picture of the current setup. I'm just doing little incremental improvements as I go, and camp, and realize it could be better if X, Y, Z...

So pictured here:

• FrontRunner 67L (17.7 g) water tank, with a little frame I built to hold it in place while also providing a platform on top of which to put three FrontRunner wolf packs, collapsing sink, and a cub pack. The frame is held in place by a black ratchet strap, and I have a 2x4 strategically placed to keep the water tank from moving around while also giving lateral support to keep the legs of the frame from squishing inward due to the angled pull of the ratchet strap.
  
• If the weather sucks and/or the bugs are awful, I hide inside the camper and utilize the left half of the little frame platform for my stove, and stack the bins on top of eachother on the right side. Works great.
  
• Water pump is a Shurflo Revolution 4008-101-E65, which tees into a
  Ginsey 94620 Assisted Bather Shower Sprayer, White
  Rinse Ace Assisted Bather 8-foot long sprayer. I love this sprayer, when I get to camp I switch the power to the pump on, and then the sprayer has a level control on it that goes from off to full blast, so I can use it at will for spraying off dishes, filling water bottles, rinsing fruit, washing hands, hippie showers, etc. The only downside is the awful plastic smell and taste which tends to blow off after spraying (wasting) water for about 10 seconds, man I gotta figure out how to fix that. There is also a premium water tank hose kit, which I had intended to use for filling up water bottles but it turns out that the sprayer has a narrow spray setting that accomplishes this just fine.
  
• ARB 50l fridge freezer, I got a great deal on this on Labor Day, came with the cover and some other stuff.
• My old double-burner Primus camp stove, two folding camp chairs that totally fuck my back up after sitting in them for more than 10 minutes, a Barbie shovel and an axe.

You'll notice there is nothing bolted down, an in fact there is a ton of open space ... that is by design, I wanted to be able to have all of my camping gear (minus a 'food' bin that I don't keep in my truck because we have bears) always in my truck, and still be able to toss big things in the back. And if I really need to put some really big stuff in the back, I can spend the 10 minutes to unstrap the water system and fridge, and slide everything out to have a completely empty bed.






On my to-do list:

• A folding table, that I can use for dish washing and food prep. I might try to figure out how to affix this table to the bottom of the aluminum rails that hold the mattress pad up above my head, so it kind of hangs up and stays out of the way.
  
• Simplify the plumbing. Repipe the sprayer using food grade hose, so that its water doesn't reek of plastic for the first 10 seconds of spraying; get rid of the premium hose kit and the T to it; move the pump back a little further into its cavity so it doesn't get bumped so much.
• See if that rear tire can fit in the stock spare wheel location without too much grinding. Turns out I really don't have much use for the dual swing-outs on the rear bumper (other than storing the spare) so I'd like to take the swing-out arms off and put them in storage until I do a longer trip that requires a larger propane tank and stuff.

 

Wow, your setup is awesome. I'm new to trucks, but want the same setup as you. How difficult is it to take the vagabond out of your truck? For most of the year, I'd want it removed...only need it for summer months. Hoping remove and install of the vagabond isn't too difficult. thanks for the help!

My Nomad will have all of this... 60L Fridge/Freezer, Dometic burner, 60" couch/dinette/bed combo, 15-gallon tank with pump and sink, "upstairs" 54" x 80" bed, storage and a propex indirect heater. And I will have a PETT toilet that sits between the couch and counter at night so no need to leave the warmth of the propex heated Nomad to urinate. And I am working on shower catch pan with curtain and stainless 1.5 gallon bug sprayer that can be heated directly on the burner.

 

My 35" Toyo Muds fit just fine in the factory spare spot.

 

I just purchased a new 2021 double cab Tundra and have a Vagabond on order for it, mine has the sharkfin antenna and I'm hoping the camper will clear it, since all the 2020 and 2021 Tundras have this, and most likely the new generation as well when it is announced. If you don't mind checking, what's the height from the top of your bedrail to the bottom of the overhang? I'm measuring 23.5" to the top of my antenna, so I'm hoping that the camper sits above that.

Here are my responses:

1. How much gap does it have between the roof of cab and the camper?

The bottom side of the cabover is 24.5" above the top of your bed. That will give you the best measurement as cab to bed top dimensions vary between vehicles.

2. How tall is the camper and the fan on the roof. (need to figure out the garage height)

34.5” above the truck bed rails and 36.5” with the fan.

I actually ended up buying my friend's spot in line, it's due to be made in the next batch, but apparently there is a delay in Vagabond's window order, I just spoke to them yesterday, they aren't sure exactly when it's going to show up.
