Weak Brakes or too Much Torque?

I recall about a year ago someone asking if anyone had issues with the brakes holding strong while at a stop light. I didnt think much of it until recently. Ive had several times where I have crept up on the vehicle in front of me unknowingly, only until I was close enough to apply significant pressure on the brake pedal to keep the truck stopped.

A few days ago I was sitting at a stop light, as I've done hundreds of times before, and I thought the car in front of me was backing up all of a sudden. I smashed the brake pedal hard, only to discover that I was moving forward, and the vehicle in front of me was stationary. I was only inches away from the car in front of me.

Do y'all think this is due to the lack of pressure from the brake fluid to the calipers, a lack of brake pedal leverage, or due to the amount of low end torque due to the 4.30 rear end?

 

When was the last time you bled your brakes?

I was having this issue only to find out that the yahoos that touched my truck last improperly bled my rear calipers. After 30 mins under the truck and a bunch of air coming out of the lines, I had strong brakes again. I haven’t had the creeping issue since.

 

Never. My truck has 11500 miles on it and has only had 2 oil changes from the dealership. I cant imagine it could have that much air in the lines from the factory.

 

If it’s that new then maybe you just aren’t used to it?

The tundra definitely requires more pedal pressure than the Audi in my garage. But I never felt like I’ve had to press extra hard at stops.

 

I don’t know the answer, but experience the exact same thing. It requires much more hold brake pedal pressure than any other vehicle I have owned.

 

What's your idle rpm in neutral? Just curious..

 

My 07 didn't have this issue and my 14 doesn't either...

 

Didn’t have the issue on my Tacoma, Land Cruisers, etc, either. I’ve routinely found myself coming close to cars at stop lights because I didn’t apply enough pressure.

After a year and a half I’m just starting to get used to it.

Never noticed. Maybe you could adjust your seat position so that your foot naturally is applying enough pressure. I’ve found if you’re too far away, you may feel like you need to push harder due to the position your heel is in in the driving position.

Our front rotors are quite substantial, not to mention our oversized front calipers compared to the competition. No reason for creep at a stop. Once again................

In drive, while stopped it is sitting at 550 rpm according to my scan gauge. When in neutral its sitting at 770 rpm.

 

I sit pretty close to the steering wheel. I dony have to stretch my leg for either pedal.

I too have noticed this, over the last 9k miles, I have had to readjust how much pressure I use while at a stop light. Way more pressure needed then my 09 I traded in on the 19.

Freaked me out a few times to be honest!!

 

Same here. Both of my Tundras. It's annoying.

 

I feel like we need a support group for creepy Tundras.

 

Sounds like you need "Heavier Shoes" to hold the pedal down. Disclaimer: (1) "Heavier Shoes" will decrease fuel economy. (2) "Heaver Shoes" will increase smiles per gallon. (3) "Heavier Shoes" will not be held liable for increased encounters with local and state Law Enforcement or that annoying noise you refer to as your spouse in the passenger seat screaming "STOP IT BEN, WHEN ARE YOU GONNA GROW UP!!!".


I've seen this in my and my buddies truck (both Tundras), big engine+low gear ratio makes it want to creep, even worse when the a/c cycles on.

 

I've noticed this in my Tacoma. Exactly as @BENWALES says, worse with A/C. But if i'm not paying attention and get lazy with my foot, i'll notice i start creeping forward. I've just learned to be cognitive. Also, not being distracted when at a light or at a stop while in Drive.

 

I have the same experience with my tundra.

 

Is it considered skipping if you never do leg day?

 

I haven’t been to the gym in a while myself. And I always hate leg day. So I guess if you never go, you never skipped it LOL.

So you can push harder on the brake.

 

I’m a ex-soccer player and hunter. It does take more pressure on brakes than any other vehicle I’ve owned. We’re holding back 380 horses.

 

I do the same thing just more play in the pedal than my wife’s car which I drive 50 percent of the time.

OK it’s funny you guys mentioned this. In my tundra I find that when I get to the stoplight I automatically put it in neutral and then pop it back in gear when the light turns green because of this. I never realized I consciously did this until I read this post and started thinking about it. Funny I don’t have to do this on my wife’s pilot! LOL

 

Brake fluid does wear out. It gets contaminated with copper. If you have never did a brake flush after that many miles. You might consider that one. But if anything. The brakes are overbuilt for these trucks. Deff not the torque of the truck in 1st at an idle. You have something going on with the brake system
