Not sure if anyone can help here but I recently purchased a 2020 tundra sr5 sport. It has the smart key system which I believe is standard on the 20’s. Sometimes when I get out of the vehicle and leave the key inside it lets out an extremely loud beep until I open the door back up. It also displays “key detected in vehicle” on the dash along with a blinking warning triangle light. Most other times if I get out and leave the key inside it doesn’t do a thing, every now and again it does the warning thing. Why is it doing it every now and again? And can I disable this feature? I know whether or not the key is in the vehicle and I don’t need it beeping and making loud noises and forcing me to remove it from the truck so it stops.

It shouldn't be intermittent, but the circumstances under which you're leaving the key in the truck matter. Whether it's on, whether you try to lock the door before you close it, etc. You can't turn it off; but no matter how cognizant you are, at some point in the future you're going to accidentally leave that key in the truck, possibly with it running, and you'll be glad it works the way it does.

Leave that key in the truck by accident and the truck can be driven off by anyone. Imagine if they accidentally fell out of your pocket and escaped under the seat. It would be a huge liability for Toyota if they failed to warn you.

You can get a 2020 without the push button start. My 2020 SR5 SX uses a regular key which works out great because I don't have a man purse. :D

My man purse has a 6" lift and 37's, and my push button start is growing a beard.

I only leave the key in it when I’m at home, work or at a friends house. Those 3 places are as safe as any for me. All I do is step out of the vehicle and try to walk away and sometimes it yells at me. I don’t try and lock the truck from the handle or anything Once I’m out. Just don’t know why it does it sometimes and not others

Not sure if this helps but here goes: I had a 2018 Tacoma with the smart key that did this a few times. I looked in the manual and it said that it would do this if I attempted to lock the doors while one was open. Turned out I was closing the door by pushing on the door handle. Trained myself to not do that anymore and the problem went away.

I thought about that as well but I always shut it by the edge of the door, not the handle

I Shouldn’t be forced to have to keep it in my pocket.

It's the nature of a smart access. Not sure what else to tell you.

But...i've never noticed mine inconsistently beeping with or without the key. Mine would only beep if i try locking with the key inside or if the truck is running and i walk away with the key in my pocket. I've never heard it beep with the truck completely off but key inside.

I think you can turn off the beeping warning. I randomly found it one day when I was playing around with the headunit. The truck has to be in parked for the option to be available though. I left mine on because my keys fell out of my pockets a lot. So I find it useful.
