05 Tundra engine rebuild

    05 Tundra set 4x4 quad cab
    Wanting to rebuild the engine in my 05 tundra. I have lots of experience rebuilding sb chevys but this will be my first 4.7 Iforce build. Looking for suggestions on :

    1. Cylinder heads.. do they even make aftermarket heads? Ported? Bigger valves? Ect...
    2. Camshafts.. can u install more aggressive camshafts?
    3. Can u install headers? Do they make a difference? Ect..

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

    3: yes, not much.

    The Japanese make very efficient motors that are hard to improve on. There's probably no reason to rebuild it. Blown HGs are rare, and I've never heard of rod or main bearings wearing out. I have 319k on mine and feel no need for a rebuild.

    Thanks for the info. This truck has 360k on it. It blew the bottom radiator hose and got really hot b4 I realized what was going on. It still runs ok, but uses water and every couple hundred miles or so will get hot again or blow the bottom radiator hose. I'm thinking a head gasket or cracked head, no water in the oil tho or oil in the water, but builds pressure in the cooling system. I bought a 2016 tundra that's my driver now and I'm just wanting to make a toy out of this truck. Do u think just a standard rebuild would be best?

    No aftermarket heads. You could gasket match for sure though to gain minimal amount of performance.
    There are cams, but they’re tailored for the supra guys running turbos so may not be the best choice unless you plan on running boost

    headers will make a difference. Long tubes are where you’ll get the most gain across the board.

    if you want to rebuild, get 1991 Lexus ls400 connecting rods. Much beefier and will bolt right in. If not go aftermarket. They’re out there. They are the weakest link in the 4.7

    Just an FYI 1UZ rods from 95 and older are thicker than the rods they use and the later 1uz and 2uz's. They can hold quite a bit more power.

    Once my motor goes i plan to use them but everything else i found didn't have a very good ROI.

    Def get long tube headers and exhaust but outside of that there's not a lot of significant gains.

    Thank u guys for all the info. Just throwing this idea out there.... since I'm VERY comfortable with SBC's, I'm confident that I could change mounts and drop in a 500hp+ 406 with a built up 350 turbo trans. Would have to redo the gauge cluster and set in appropriate gauges and rewire a bunch of stuff but since this is a toy project... any thoughts on going that route?

    Rebuild with early 1uz rods as previous posters have said, or go all out and add forged pistons, aftermarket rods and boost it.
    There are inexpensive turbo kits for the 2uz on ebay.
    The SBC route will be more work, why not a 5.3 ls motor and 4 speed auto instead?
    Ls swap if you don't have to worry about emissions

    Personally if you're willing to do that much work I would just boost the 4.7 with the pre 95 1uz rods.

    At that point I’d just build the 4.7 on the cheap and throw a turbo on it. Less headache. And less of a nightmare making it all work.

    I'm liking the boost option here, what kind of hp and tq gains can be expected on a 5k budget. 5k is about what I would have invested in the swap because I already have the engine and trans but would have to figure out the transfer case thing bc it is a 4x4.

    If you swap the rods out with early 1uz rods and get the eBay kit and buy a decent turbo 5k should be doable for a 400hp build.

    with room to grow later. Aftermarket rods would be superior. But costly

    Alright, I'm sold. I'll pull the motor this weekend and strip it down. Can I number all the pistons like I would a chevy? Hell, it just dawned on me that I dont even know the firing order or the engine cylinder numbering sequence or shit about this engine. I guess I'll learn..

    Number the pistons. Cylinder one is the forward most cylinder. Driver side is 1,3,5,7
    Passenger side is 2,4,6,8

    firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

    Sounds like you have reached about the same conclusion as I have. If I keep my truck for the haul I'll probably do long tube headers, but eventually I'm going to want more power than headers and regearing for my bigger tires will give me. At that point I think a turbo is the best way to go.
