Timing belt @dealer tips.

Hello everyone, hope your trucks and yourself are doing well. I am taking my tundra to the dealership for a the infamous t-belt job . Any tips on what else that should do? Engine has 134k miles. As far as i know i should do, belt, water pump, tensioner, cam seals (as long as that doesnt cost that much, assuming its cheap though). What else am i missing? I hear usually just the belt , pump, and tensioner is good but i want to get everything done right just incase bad luck bites me in the booty. I want to be set till 210 thousand miles, thanks yall!

 

How handy are ya doing the non-motor stuff? I'd do a hard reset on all consumables.

I'd do plugs, PS fluid, brake fluid, drive line fluids, ATF drain and fill.

 

Sounds like you are on the right track. What is the dealership going to charge you to do this?


For reference, I had a mechanic that I know do the job for around $750.00 (timing belt + water pump).


Seems like I remember Toyota being pretty high.

 

I would also replace the thermostat and if you haven't done the serpentine belt I would have a new one put on.

 

@Zebruaj i did my rear, front diff and t case, all plugs i did already too. Ill do all that other stuff later myself in the summer

@PCJ Will prob do thermostat, not serpentine belt though. I can prob do that myself and its nbd if it breaks somehow. And i can visually examine it easily aswell

 

The serpentine belt wouldn't be labor, just parts. They're going to take it off and put it back on anyhow.

 

Makes sense to just buy a new serp belt and let them install it.

 

Perhaps the OP is mixing up terms, but the cams on the 3UR- FE engine as far as I know are driven by timing chains, not timing belts. Is Pucks18 talking about the serpentine belt only?

 

You are in the 1st Gen section...he has a 2UZ which most certainly requires a timing belt...

 

OP has a 2001 Tundra Limited, which comes with the 4.7l 2UZ-FE and has a timing belt

 

Serp belt, T-stat, upper/lower radiator hoses, good to have cam/crank seals on hand just in case they are leaking. If they aren't, I'd leave them alone.

 

Unless you know the radiator has been replaced, it's a good time to do that too...

 

Oops. Sorry guys, apparently I was lost! Good luck with getting that belt replaced - you definitely don't want that thing to break.

Make sure they use OEM parts. We've had a few members come crying after their aftermarket timing belt broke.

 

@speedtre Doesnt look it was replaced. I know tranny fluid can mix in there, so maybe i should as preventative maintenance. Idk if my wallet allows it though. It seems fine and not corroded to me

Denso replacement (they make the OEM) is less than $120....and the labor should practically be free with everything else they are doing in the same area, this hardly adds any work at all....just an FYI.

 

@speedtre Ill ask my guy how much more it will be. He says he doesnt use denso, just oem from the toyota dealership. Which i know is just denso. Its just a play of words but he said "i do not use denso, just parts from the toyota dealership" so hopefully they dont charge much more for a new radiator if you were to just buy one from there. Ill call the dealer and ask how much it is without an installation, thanks. I dont want to get paranoid about thw radiator though and the pink milkshake shit but ehh idk

Just get a Denso and do it yourself after the timing belt change...it's an easy job, especially with Youtube videos.

@speedtre well thanks. Just watched 1aatuos video on it, looks very easy. I will decide on which coolant to get, prob will just get the oem coolant just cause I'm sure theres a bunch of posts of people bashing the aftermarket and stuff. Might as well for peace of mind. Ill def do it myself. Part of me thinks that this pink milmshake issue is overly talked about and i shouldnt worry, other part of me says to just do it. My radiator looks like its in super good condition and really clean, maybe it is newer. Whatever at least i know now. Thanks for your effort in replies too btw

 

I would make sure he's using Aisin parts and not cheap aftermarket. Doubt he's buy straight from the dealer.

 

I am sooooo glad I found an awesome shop that knows toyota trucks/SUVS and will let me buy the parts. They are 40 miles away and it's a PITA to take my truck and leave it with them, but it's worth it.

 

@PCJ Using your logic, the dealership doesnt use dealership parts because they quoted me 1200 parts and labor for tbelt and water pump. Whereas your ebay screenshot is 1200 only parts.

 

@speedtre am i missing something lol? Correct me if I'm wrong. But that ebay kit seems grossly overpriced if parts and labor is 30 more dollars at my dealership then just parts on ebay. Lol
