I saw that thread last year. Not a chance I could pull that off and I don't have half the tools necessary. I'd rather just pay Vagabond but I admire anyone that has the skills to do it themselves.

Cool write up! That guy did some nice work for DIY. I skimmed the article and couldn’t find the total cost of materials and labor. Saw he was selling the design for $20? which is good.

Total weight at 375lbs is nice.

My mantra: Go in light. Come out lighter.

Translation: Sleep in a 5lb. tent on the ground. Shiver and starve. Come home to domestic life and have a greater appreciation of things. :D

I've been thinking about it recently since i stumbled upon a sweet aluminum shell that had a similar design. I'm torn because my practical side just says buy the softopper and build a rack if I want a tent later, but my cheap-ass side says make a friggin shell because you can. I bet I could build a shell for maybe $500-700 in material and then just have to pay someone to sew up the tent for me.

Realistically you could build this for $3,000.
This is assuming you do EVERYTHING yourself. You will need access to a welder & sewing machine at a minimum. Having a router, mill and laser cutter helps a lot as i’ll show, but isn’t necessary.

That much 8020 and hardware is expensive by itself. I understand the applications for it and why it was probably chosen, but there are less expensive ways of making a hinge and gasketed sealing surface. I like extrusion, but it's spendy stuff.

There's also a possibility that someone could minimize the amount of zippered areas and repurpose a premade tent for some sections. This is a hunch, but seems possible.

That’s cool. I’d rather sleep in the FERD though.

Totally could 4x4 swap it , but that’s a TON of work.
