I have a 2014 double cab 4.6 litre tundra. I'm a bit confused about my "S" gear on my transmission. It seems if i leave it in "D" drive to do normal around town driving it defaults to S-4. I change it to S-6 then back to "D" and it goes back to S-4. Can i drive in "S" all the time? It seems this is my overdrive.
    Appreciate any help.

It's probably because your engine temp isn't warm enough for 5th or 6th. I think it needs to be at 140° before going into those gears. Please experiment and let us know if that's the case.

I keep it in D and never use S.

His question is hard to understand. But whenever you put it in the S mode it always starts as a four speed. And I always use S. D is for the highway and I don't even use it then I use S and upshift accordingly. I feel that if you're not careful when using D your transmission will be short-lived. JMHO

"S" Mode = Sequential mode (not sport or standard)
You should be able to put it in D and keep it in D. It shouldn't automatically take you out of D and into S.
When S is selected you can keep it on S-4. The truck will downshift as you slow and up shift up to S-4 as normal. This is unlike a true manual mode. Once you reach S-4 you can red line it and it wont shift up higher until you select S-5.

The short answer, is S-n determines the highest gear your transmission will use. Put it in S, and you decide. Put it in D, and the computer decides. S-4 and below effectively locks out the overdrive gears,

It's foolish to leave in S. If you forget to go into D you'll over Rev the engine.

I've had this question but am too chicken to try to answer:
If you're going 70mph in D and put it in S does it for to S6 or default to S4?

    Interested for the answer too.

When I did this on my BMW cruising at 70, it would kick it to 5th. But this is an 8sp we're talking... and a sports car lol

If you put the transmission in sequential mode it will not automatically go into anything higher than S-4, no matter what the speed is. If you tap the shifter forward you can go into a higher gear, but it will not happen automatically. And you can definitely go 70MPH in 4th gear.

The ECU won't allow it to be manually downshifted at that speed. Hate to spoil your rant with facts
Hell its even mentioned in the previously posted video at the 2 minute mark.

Why? It does fine in D. Its a V8 for god sakes it will do well over 100. Ive hit 100 on an interatate on ramp.
And for those who disagree about S or D. You can have your own opinion, BUT you cant have your own FACTS...

I have to agree with the other posters on the ECU not allowing over-rev, although I've never tested it and don't plan to......a majority of engines today have rev-limiters for that very purpose. In fact, my 1999 Harley has a rev limiter....trust me, I;ve hit it many times. They simply will not go over the designed max RPM, which in many cases is understated in the first place. As far as max speed....I have no idea of what it is for our Tundras, but usually it is determined by the speed rating of the tires and not necessarily by the vehicle's capabilities.

I tried throwing it in S while going about 84mph. It dropped to S4, but still nowhere near the rev-limiter. Too much traffic to try going faster.

I think that the way to test this would be to go however fast you think will be fast enough, switch it over to S-Mode and then pull it back to S-1. I'm going to predict that at say 75 mph, you might get to S-3 and get close to red line, but nothing will happen if you go to S-2 or S-1 until the vehicle is moving slow enough to shift to that gear without over-revving the engine.
