Getting ready to pull trigger on revolver x4

Never thought a cover would be so hard to pick.

 

Have you looked at Diamondback? I know it is expensive but not much more than the one you are looking @. I saw some reviews on the bak 4 and they are up and down.

 

I've had my revolver for about a year and a half now so I can offer some insight,

Cons- you cannot roll it in the winter, or heavy frost mornings

mine is also starting to leak a lot now, haven't had the time to narrow it down. It has also started to split the top material at the first fold near the tailgate.

Its easy to use and I like the idea of it being metal but if I had to do it again I would probably go with something else.

 

Yes. I like it I just need my open bed more. That really limits open bed

 

So I'm guessing any roll up, will have issues in the winter.

 

Yeah I would say so, its just something to consider. There are mornings I go out to load my truck and cannot roll up the cover.

 

Not necessarily. There are quite a few threads you can get opines from others about various types. Recommend you continue weighing it all out and get some more community thoughts (especially from those up north) before

 

Any idea if you leave it rolled, if it hard to unroll. Obviously is it a full on ice storm or blizzard it will be.

 

I've read thru most of the threads on a few different forums that what got me so confused about which one. It seems like most leak a bit. Same thing is happening with step bars. I think I'm just going custom step/ slider. Still not sure!

 

I just installed x4 a few weeks ago...
The X4 is going to retail you $800-$1100 for the newest version after taxes. A run of the mill roll up vinyl cover is going to run you about $200. I came from the $200 cover to the X4. I've used vinyl roll ups on my past 3 trucks including the tundra since new. Is the X4 worth the extra $600-$800? Not sure.

It looks great. The best feature of the X4 is that it doesn't flap around in the breeze on the highway. I do a lot of highway driving so this was the biggest feature for me. The finish and visual look is much better than the cheesy fake texture that come on the vinyl roll up.

That's about where the fun ends.
This thing leaks. Not a big deal for some (or me), but it's frustrating, and not acceptable at this price point.
Complete lack of thought where the T-Rail terminates at the tailgate. (see photos in other linked thread)
When rolled up its about 2/3rds larger than vinyl ones, to be expected but something to consider.
Plus what @Alloutdrs1 mentioned about rolling it in winter. A vinyl cover the snow can be mostly pushed off and it rolled with some contamination on it if need be. I don't think that's an option with the X4, it would have to be 100% clear.
Last, a vinyl cover will give you some flexibility loading slightly taller items. The cross bars can be removed tossed aside, the cover has some give to it, so you can squeeze in a taller item, and still stretch the cover over it temporarily for a short drive if it happens to be raining. Not happening on the x4.

You could buy a new vinyl roll up cover every 3 years, for the next 12 years, and still come out cheaper than an x4. They also wont leak as much.

wow I hope this is a one off. After only 12 months that would really set me off Maybe you can get some support from them and replace the top?

Yes like OP and all others found unfortunately most have leakage issues, question is which one is least? Have looked at ARE, undercover, Roll n Lock, snug, and handful or so more. Reasonably dry or some moisture etc. are terms not uncommonly used now on most sites, giving them imo the out. Even higher $$ items include similar or subtle disclaimers, probably due to various threads and other user feedback or comments. Agree with everyone the search is a bear. I haven't pulled the trigger yet but will continue to weigh out the shared community experience and go with the one with the least amount wet bed comments. More than likely I will opt for affordable/lower end as many smart users have done, feel it out for a year our so before shelling out the $1k+ these puppies are running. Damn I still have more mods to consider but post purchase will be fiscally challenged for a moment. At least those ther mods won't be as challenging.

 

Here's a picture of what mine is starting to do at one of the folds and I keep this thing wiped down with 303 after I wash. I assume more will follow, you can see in the picture everywhere there is a metal slat under the vinyl.

That's one of the reasons I went with the Truxedo Pro X15. Very heavy duty material and doesn't "flap" appreciably when driving. Lifetime warranty on the fabric. Rolls up nicely behind the cab for full bed access. Obviously not as secure as a "metal" or "sold top" from break in, but also figure if they are planning on it they will get in without as much damage.

 

Purchased at the beginning of April 2017, so yeah its not that old.

 

I have an X2 and it's great. No leaks, no issues with vinyl. Rolls up without a problem in the cold or when it has frost, obviously you have to clear snow off. I definitely recommend the X2. I have 3 buddies with them as well and have not heard a single complaint.

I bought my truck, 2014 1794, almost a year ago and it came with a Revolver X2 already installed on it. I wasn't sure when the previous owner installed it but here are the things I noticed/addressed over the last year of ownership with this cover.

1) Whoever installed it didn't take the time to align it properly. The cover leaked a fair amount of water the first time I washed it. I took the time to re-align it and it took care of 99% of my water leaks, took about an hour of my time and a little trial and error. Now I only get water ingress if I directly spray it with a powerful stream of water.
2) The felt underlining on both sides underneath the cover started to droop on mine. Looks like the previous owner had something that was rubbing against the lining because it was drooping from the edges of the lining not the center. A little 3M spray adhesive took care of it.
3) The female end of the securing strap/buckle broke. I called Bak Industries (Truck Hero) and the representative told me that they were aware of this happening and they express mailed me a repair kit with new straps, buckles, seals etc. completely free of charge. I changed out everything to be on the safe side.

In regards to the cover itself I like it very much. It rolls up very easily, while it doesn't roll up as small as a soft vinyl cover I fell that this one is much more secure since its backed with aluminum slats. I live in GA and haven't had snow since I bought this truck so I can't really comment on that aspect. I like that it has a very low profile and doesn't protrude, makes for a very sleek look and it doesn't flap in the wind like soft ones tend to. I wash it with the same shampoo I use to wash the truck and liberally apply 303 Aerospace afterwards, gives it a nice matte finish and keeps it protected. I probably would have ended up with this cover or something very similar if it didn't already come with my truck. I've had no major issues with it so I can't complain. Hope this helps with your decision.

 

How the heck does yours roll with frost? mine wont even begin to roll If the truck has a frost on it, are your treating the cover with anything special? It sucks when it wont roll on cold frosty mornings because loading my tools becomes a pain with the cover in place.

 

Just frost doesnt seem to have any effect on it. A layer of ice probably would be a problem, and I have to clear snow off to roll it.
I just use 303 on my normally. A few times I have used waxaddict tyre feeder but I dont think that has anything to do with it.
The x2 is the older version with a soft "leather like" vinyl on the top. I have never had an issue rolling it. This new matte finish x4 seems to have all sorts of issues with stiffness, premature wear, leaking. And the kicker is it's more expensive just for that matte look.

 

Mine is an x2 as well, treat with 303 also. Just frost I deal with here in Virginia beach and its so stiff it wont begin to roll. I'm gonna try some wax addict lol.

 

Wow that's crazy. It was 16 degrees today and I had no problem rolling it up at all. I will park outside one night this weekend and see how it doesn't its supposed to be close to single digits so I will get some decent frost on it. I just dont recall ever having an issue rolling it up

So reading the post I thank all for great info.
But it seems like it might have some minor issue during cold weather. But myself being Texas it seems like the cover should be good. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger. Did I miss anything or Any thoughts.

 

@kim_89 it's hard to justify full price for the x4 given its shortcomings, esp when covers that dont have these problems, like the truxedo, are half the price and still look good. I'm not sure how long the x4 will last given what users have said here, while something like the truxedo may outlast it, at half the cost.
do i regret buying it? ehhh. Am I disappointed? a bit.

at least in texas you're not dealing with ice and snow

Hey Pat, yeah man I still like it. I have had zero issues. It rolls up nice, still no issues with water getting in. The vinyl on top is is good shape with minimal maintenance and the rubber seals on the edges are still like new, I do hit them with waxaddict or carpro perl or aero 303 now and then. If there is a complaint, it's that it does rattle a little and if you have the back window down you can hear some rattling or shaking at highway speeds but its not bad.
