2006 Headlights

Has anyone around here had experience rwith using aftermarket headlight housings? Mine are getting pretty cloudy (as I would expect for 13 year old plastic...).

As far as I can tell, this is the original part? Which seems ridiculously expensive...?

You’ll get a ton of opinions from everyone around here. Lets start off by letting us know what bulb type you would prefer? Are you handy or just want plug and play?

 

@Professional Hand Model Great point! First off, on the bulbs, I'm not sure that I have a preference. Truck has stock bulbs as of this moment, but I'm interested in either a higher output replacement bulb, or if there are plug and play type LED options, those would be on the table as well. A friend has been running LED bulbs linked below on his truck, but we haven't spoken at any level of detail on it. I have run LED bulbs from Cyclops Adventure Sports on my motorcycles for years, and those have been awesome, but I think they only do bikes.

In terms of level of handiness, I would rate myself maybe in the middle of the pack? I installed 6112 fronts and SPC control arms on my truck yesterday (fronts were assembled and my dad was helping a ton), added 5160 rears and replacement steering bushings a couple weeks ago, and all of that went well (just very slow).

My exposure and comfort with anything electrical is far more limited.

 

My Fogs are from HR. I love them. They are the PerfectFits which are now called something else on their site. I installed those first because I really love fog lights and wasn’t sure about what to do about the Headlamps as the tech was changing fast as I was learning.

Anyways, I was going to buy their LED’s for Headlamps and I caught them moving warehouses so they were really slow on delivery (3 months). Came across Katanas which had great reviews on Big Guurrl. Ordered and delivered in 2 days. Many say they are from the same factory.

Ends up I did a good thing by installing the Fogs first as that eliminated the need for resistors when doing the Headlamps (per HR convo).

Yours is an 06 and might be funky with needing resistors per others experience.

My Fogs are outstanding. The Katanas are very nice at $49 which is same price as crap SilverStars I had bought new for temporary. My light is way better than stock. We could argue all day about lighting, but for the price I am happy. I’ve saved the SilverStars just in case but so far so good.

Projectors seem to be where its at for the future $$$. Just waiting on the Guinea Pigs.

It’s kind of a dead forum, but lots of good info if you can learn the search algorithms. Retrofitsource seems to be the powerhouse and the go to, they’ve acquired a couple of competitors.

 

Aftermarket headlights are hit or miss. The side marker housings seem to commonly leak. LED headlights can work fine as an easy upgrade. Projectors are great, but require more time and generally more money to install. If you do led headlights you'll probably need resistors to keep your high beams and fogs working correctly.

My advice is go with aftermarket housings and LEDs. I had trouble adjusting mine, but in hindsight I think it was the inner headlight reflector bottoming out on the bulb opening. My other bit of advice is to plan on getting plug in resistors and also use some clear silicone sealant to seal the housings and side marker housings.

When all of that isn't enough you can go to projectors. That was my journey.
