Stock black shocks are the best. Buy a pair on eBay for like $60. I had TRD sport shocks, went to Bilstein 5100 (horrendous) and now I am on the stock OEM shocks. Best decision I’ve made and if they fail who cares they’re dirt cheap, takes 20 minutes to replace.

edit: Also, the rear suspension design on the Tundra (and Titan) are inferior to the big 3 which rides significantly better. The Tundra leaf springs are mounted trapezoid. I came from Chevy and have ridden in many RAMs and they have no suspension roughness...it’s a drawback of the Tundra. I noticed the ride quality instantly even in my trucks stock form with P rated tires. I would tow an empty tandem axle trailer and the rear on the Tundra was bouncing like crazy. The tires are probably not balanced correctly on the trailer but the Tundra is extremely sensitive to vibrations/oscillations where the same trailer and different truck it was hardly noticeable.

Do you maybe know the difference between Toyota shocks 48530-09N10 (base) or 48530-0980 (SRT, Platinum)? I wonder which one would be smoother? Lot of potholes here min MN and thanks for sharing your 5100 experience, almost ordered those.

The 5100’s are a firm ride for sure, but they IMO have some good characteristics. Having been riding on these for about a year and a half, I can recommend these for tow and haul as a great shock.

Regular street driving (non-tow) on smooth streets/highway they are smooth and sporty. I do not recommend them for off-road speed driving due to rear molar loss. Driving a 2002 V8 on Michelin Defenders LTX (e-rated).

Thx. How would you rate them versa stock on pot hole ridden roads? I live in Minnesota, and winters are harsh on roads .

Thats a loaded question and very subjective. I don’t know of any potholed road thats going to be an easy ride. You might be better off getting some high dollar off road type shocks in your case. You’ll pay $$$ and lots people here will help you spend it.

Watching this thread. Thinking of doing a suspension overhaul eventually.

No, I was just looking for a cheap replacement like the 5100. One guy was happy with KYB and I guess OEM will be similar. Rear OEM cost 45.21 for my Tundra.

Bilstein 4600's and Michelin LTX M/S 2's on my 2002, and it rides smooth as silk.

I also have a Hellwig anti-roll bar installed.

Could not agree more. With a near stock setup, they're perfect for on-road use.
