I thought long and hard about buying one of the Land Cruisers there before I got the Tundra. When I was looking they had 4 or 5 really nice ones but were rated to tow only 5k. They had the 6cyl engine if I recall.

Part of me buying a new truck was having better tow capacity than my 4runner.....so that was that. They have sold most of the Toyotas I really liked but they will get more. I have no problem owning an older car if it is in good order, even as a daily driver.

Sure would like one of the older Supras! Maybe I could tell the wife I got it to save on fuel cost of driving the Tundra every day :)

I noticed today that one of my neighbors has a 2 door 2nd gen 4runner if that counts. I don't see those often.

Nice! I've been debating buying up a LX470 (same as land cruiser) and building it up. They can be found at fairly reasonable prices still

My dad had a 1990 Toyota 4Runner he imported from Japan. A couple notes on owning these types of vehicles:

    - The 4cyl turbo diesel is gutless and severely underpowered for a vehicle this heavy. Lots of low-end torque, so if you want to off road it's fine and putting around town is no problem. Forget about towing though. Once you get to highways speeds, it simply can't get out of it's own way. Dad overheated and blew the engine towing a 13ft aluminum boat up the Coquihalla Highway in BC on a hot day. He was doing 90km/h, and is a very conservative driver. The engine simply isn't built for work, which is ironic due to it being a diesel. Do yourself a favor and get the 6 cyl version, diesel or gas.

    - In Japan, certain vehicles are limited to certain speeds. You can go faster than this speed, but you'll have an annoying chime sounding until you get below it. For dad's 4runner, this was 105km/h. Above that you would hear "ding ding"..."ding ding" constantly. I'm sure that can be disabled. Look into it for sure. It's annoying as fuck, especially with highways in BC and Alberta that have speed limits off 110km/h.

    - Right hand drive takes some getting used to and some adapatation. Shifting with your left hand isn't bad. The gear locations are the same eg 1st is still up and left. Making a right turn into traffic is a pain in the ass since you have to look left past the passenger to see oncoming traffic. Also, passing is a pain especially if you have the gutless 4cyl, on two lane roads and from behind larger vehicles. You have to hang back to see past the the vehicle ahead of you, then punch the throttle to get past. Double your intended passing distance to do it safely.

    - Your rearview mirror is up and left, not up and right. Takes a bit of getting used to. Your signal light and wiper stalks are reversed. You'll be hitting the wipers when you mean to hit the turn signals for awhile.

Other than that, the vehicles are pretty cool. If you're really into the Hilux trucks and have the spare change, they're fun toys.

I don't think it might be easy to get insurance on a RHD. I was trying to insure a German grey market Mercedes several years ago. I had to shop around a while and one of the questions that would come up whether it was RHD, which it wasn't. A lot would not insure if a car has RHD.
