Hey all, hoping this is the right place for this. So long story short, I am trying to replace my carrier bearing on my '15 Tundra. I am to the point where I have the big 30 MM bolt off and was attempting to remove the yoke. Its stuck on there of course so I tried holding the yoke in a vice and putting a socket over top the threads where the bolt was. I tried tapping with a hammer but unfortunately put a flat spot on the threads from the socket. (Hope all this is making sense.) Now I cant get the bolt threaded back on. Is a new driveshaft my only option at this point?

Share some photos. I have not done any center carrier bearing replacement in 2nd/3rd, but it should be as simple as the 1st gen and other Toyotas.

I do not use vise, just block of wood.

I would try recutting the threads if you can find the right sized cutting die. Tons of sets online.

That will probably be the best option, but finding one that big, anytime soon might be a task.
You could also try some jewelry files, and very slowly get the threads back in shape.

You need to use a thread file ! If your not understanding it a file designed just for that purpose. Maybe you knew that ?

I took a closer look and zoomed in on it it pretty boogerd up ! Not sure a thread file will do it but if your patient it’s a possibility, I’d chase it with a die the correct size and pitch .

If you can't find a thread file at ace hardware you might be able to bring it to a machine shop and they should have one and maybe get your yoke off also.

Yea i may just have to experiment a little more, just trying not to make it worse. If it comes down to it i may take it to a shop like some have to suggested and let them do it.

Over the years I just used a fine cut tri-angle file, it looks like the threads are pretty good toward the bottom of the threads where it's important. Carefully apply a bit of heat to the splined area and spray liquid wrench or something like it, too much heat could take the hardening out of the metals. Definitely have a good puller, rental places sometimes have those. Taking it to a good shop is not a bad idea either.

If all else fails, any good machinist can put that in a lathe and make those threads good as new, but a die should suffice

A 2-jaw puller is your best bet for pulling the yoke. Make sure to mark the yoke and the shaft to they are assembled exactly the same on the splines.
