Howdy, i wanted to hear what kind of depreciation numbers you folks were you seeing when you traded in or sold your 3rd Gen Tundra? Please state your length of ownership and how much was lost since your purchase.

    Thank you

My 19 Pro was offered with a lease agreement where the estimated residual at 3yr 36k is $36500, so a 28% percent depreciation. Thats the lease offer though, I see them private party all the time for about 5k more than that with comparable miles.

    I didnt lease it, FYI.

I just got a quote from Vroom for selling my 2019 SR DC with 9800 mi., 5.7L, 4x4 for $31k, roughly $500 less than I paid a year ago. I’d say that’s pretty damn good resale value!

VERY SUBJECTIVE QUESTION UNLESS ANSWERED CONSISTENTLY.

#1. Don't pay too much when you buy a new Tundra (GET 12% OFF MSRP PLUS ALL REBATES PLUS TAX AND REG).
#2. Buy the right model (4X4 SR-5 TRD OFF-ROAD) holds most value.
#3. Sell you old truck, don't trade. Why make the dealer rich? (GET AN EXTRA $2,000 IN VALUE).
#4. Take care of your truck and don't add a bunch of crap accessories (JUST CAUSE YOU LIKE IT, YOU WILL NOT GET ANY MONEY BACK FROM TASTELESS ACCESSORIES).

Follow this advice and you can buy and drive a new Tundra every year. Drive it for 12,000 miles a year for $3,000. That's 25 cents a mile, no maintenance costs or repairs.

Shoot, wish i could private sell my truck but it has a lien on it and most people would rather buy from a dealership than a private seller.

If you’re in a state where the trade amount is not subject to sales tax (like AZ), you can actually come out ahead trading it in for less rather than selling privately.

What state are you in? You could also ask the sales or finance manager at a local dealer.

You’re good. Here are the states that do NOT exempt the trade value from sales tax -
California, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Montana and Virginia.

For the sake of completeness, the article I’m looking at reports Oregon has no sales tax.

It means you’ll avoid paying sales tax on the amount of the credit you receive for your trade-in on the sale. Looks like sales tax is 6.25% in Texas.

If your trade-in value is $35,000, you save 6.25% of $35,000 ($2,187.50) in sales tax by trading the vehicle in rather than buying your new vehicle without a trade.

What it really means is if you were to sell your vehicle privately rather than trading it in, you’d need to sell it for $37,187.50 to break even when compared to trading it in at the dealer for $35,000 due to your increased tax burden.

I probably should add this is all standard stuff - you shouldn’t need to “do” anything to be presented the proper amount in sales tax for the transaction. This credit is just something to consider when laying out the numbers of purchasing a vehicle.

So does the dealer decide on your vehicle’s value or is there a special source that they use to determine your vehicle’s worth?

It is the amount they agree to give you on the trade that is exempt.

Almost completely useless question in all honestly. Your truck when you trade in will be worth anywhere from $25k - $35k when you trade it in. They will sell you a new truck for anywhere from $45k to $55k.

mid yiu trade in a ford, dodge, Chevy in similar years to your tour Toyota they will give you $18k - $28k when you trade it in. They will sell you a new truck for $55k to $65k.

I hope you get the point I am making. I worked at a dealer in college and our close family friends own a Chevy dealership. Many days of beers on the lake talking about the car market....

The trade-in is only worth what a dealer is willing to give you for it.

The most objective place to get depreciation values is to look at the residual values Ally, US Bank and other huge leasing companies use to determine lease rates. They have actuaries spending their entire careers writing complex formulas depending on the part of the country you’re in, the option on the truck and actual auction values. On my 2019 the 24 month / 24K mile residual was 83% and the MSRP was $47,XXX. My payment is $289/month or something very close to that and it was a sign and drive. Head over to leasehackr.com, there are links to all the residual tables and a lot of “current deals” in the marketplace section. It’s a great resource to peruse before going out to trade or lease. Plus, there are a lot of threads of people who have leased and get out early by selling to vroom or caravana for more than the predicted residual in Toyota’s in particular. Or in other cases, to get out of leases they lid too much for upfront.
