growling noise

My 2006 tundra has a growling noise coming from under the dash near the glove box. Any idea what could be causing it ? It sounds sort of like an electric motor running, and is not continous.

 

Heater fan motor is located under the GB....lubrication time ?

 

Like bubba said. Heater fan or pissed off animal hiding under there.

Turn off your heater and see if it stops

 

The heater is not on when the noise is present, and it is not a constant noise. Most times it stops when you accelerate. Everyone who replied seems to think I know nothing about autos or that this is a good time to make jokes. The thing is I've never owned a Tundra and thought maybe some of the owners out there had heard of the same problem.

 

Well, considering nobody knows who you are, gotta start with the simple stuff first. I wonder if your and @Linuxmale's issues are related?

I actually read this thread while looking for ideas about my noise. I'm not sure I'd call my noise a growling noise. If you have ever walked on or driven over crunchy snow that is what it sounds like. You really have to understand that most of us are "Good-ol-boys" and bust stones.
You will get the help you need but you are going to pay a little for it with smart asses being smart asses.

If your truck is white I will tell you that your reason is because it is not black. Then come in with something to check.

So lets say you know your way around a truck.
When did it start. what were you doing, did you change anything?
If you have the heater off and it does it is it set to defrost?
Change it to anything other than a defrost setting like cabin or floor only. Does it still do it?

 

Won’t speak for @TX-TRD1stGEN but if only 2 responses represents “everyone” to you, so be it. Given the info given, both suggestions had a possibility of being correct.

Suggest next time you drop by, leave your damn horse at home so it won’t be so high when stepping off.

Well, if happens when the blower fan isn't running, then there are some reptiles around here that would make a similar noise when disturbed. Maybe you've got vipers hibernating in your heater duct.

Happens only with the engine running? Might need to purge the air out of your cooling system (air trapped in heater core?).

 

Is Nancy in the house?

Lets hear the conditions when the noise presents itself.

You already said the fan is not on and noise still happens. Disappears when accelerating.

Maybe you can crawl up under the truck when you hear the noise and see where/if its coming from underneath. Sounds can be hard to pin point sometimes.

Make sure your parking brake is applied. Have someone accelerate in Park and let it come back to idle.
