Hello all, my wife found a camper a vibe 26RK with weight of 6300 and hitch weight of 790. The axle are spaced out far from each other than normal campers. Thoughts?? Any?? Be great at this point. Thanks for any information

I am not clear on your question. If you are asking about your lifted 2018 pulling that with a tongue weight of 790...that is a pretty high tongue weight. Add in your 6 inch lift and 295 tires, seems a bit much to me. That high a tongue weight takes up a lot of your payload...and that would be on a stock truck. Personally, I would not be comfortable towing heavy with a 6 inch lift and really large tires.

Have you checked your door sticker to see what the actual payload of your truck is? Once you have it, you need to subtract the extra weight of that lift and tires and any other add ons of the truck. It is not the tow weight of the trailer that is an issue. Your truck can tow 6300 lbs. It is the tongue weight and overall payload that may be of concern.

Thank you. My pay load in the door says 1111. I can tow 8,800 pounds cause I have a 34 gallon gas tank.

My wife said she would take this. Would this be better? Or both need a 3/4 ton truck? Thanks F6DA2C60-F180-43EC-A972-8881BCAA81AE.jpgF6DA2C60-F180-43EC-A972-8881BCAA81AE.jpg

Find your model number on the driver doorjamb sticker. Go to the Owner Manual Section 9 Specifications. Read Vehicle Weight Capacity for your model number. Allowable tongue weight = Vehicle Weight Capacity - weight for passengers, pets and gear in truck.

Yes, 200 lbs less tongue wait makes a big difference. Regardless of what camper...make sure you get a proper weight distribution hitch. Most of the places that sell campers can get you a proper hitch installed and set up.

Yea Iam going with an equalizer. But the wife wants the big one. Lol. So it a bind now. Get a 3/4 ton or don’t get it. I had to call the salesman today and tell him to stop tell her my truck will pull safety. Cause she send me on 28 feet 6700 pounds and 610 hitch weight. Salesman just don’t get it. I might could do the 25 at 6000 pounds or the 28 footer at 6700 pounds all dry weight

The max tongue weight is around 950-990 lbs if I remember correctly, with load distribution of course.

Okay, let's back up a little. The sticker on your door says 1,111 of payload. If you have a lift, tires, and wheels, I am going to say that added 200 pounds. So now your payload is at 911 pounds. Have you added a bed cover or bed liner? If so, that reduces your payload.

now let's take into consideration your weight and your wife's. Let's just take a guess and say you weigh 200 and your wife 150. So taking in consideration your lift and tires, your weight you are now at 561 pounds tongue weight. 1,111-200-200-150 = 561 pounds.
Throw in a Yeti cooler and some luggage and your tongue weight is below 500 pounds.

I have been looking at travel trailers for 4 months now. I have to be honest and the only way I can LEGALLY tow a travel trailer and haul my wife and 2 kids is one of the single axle trailers that weigh around 4000 pounds with tongue weight of 450. By the time your have a family and gear you can max out your payload quick!!!!

Now the truck will pull it and will stop the trailer you are looking at. It is just a question if you want it be legal or not.

mid I was going to be pulling a 6,500 lb. trailer I would be looking at 3/4 ton. With the lift and wind resistant of the trailer I would not advise. I wouldn't want to be driving next to you on the interstate that is for sure.

All the tow rating of all the 1/2 tons these day are so misleading. They will pull 10k pounds, but you will run out of payload and capacity way before you come close to getting up to 10k pounds if you want to be legal.

I weighed my stock 2019 Platinum with me in it and it weighed 6,400 pounds with me in it. I only have 800 pounds to work with. With a 600lb. Tongue weight trailer I do not have room to take my family with me.....

One other things. I have talked to 3 people that have their travel trailers weight at the scales. All 3 said the tongue weight on their travel trailers is more than advertised. I have heard that some manufacturers post tongue weight without propane and the batteries on the trailer. 670 tongue weight advertised is probably 750 in the real world on a scale.

SAE J2807 standards takes in account two 150 lb occupants and a 70lb hitch. Anything over 300 lbs of occupants starts taking away from capacity.

The lift and tires is a big minus for me in this situation.

Advertised is empty tongue weight. No propane, and basic options. When you start adding and upgrading, this goes up pretty quick.

So lets take a 6500 lb empty camper at 10% tongue weight is 650 lbs. This camper can carry 1500 lbs. 6500+1500=8000 lbs. At that weight, you will be in the 800 lb weight range.

    Does that make sense?

I was reading an article and it said that the 2 150 lb. passenger and hitch weight was only mentioned to be taking into consideration in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks? Maybe the article was wrong?

Just an article out of Truck trend.com so nothing official:

    http://www.trucktrend.com/how-to/towing/1502-sae-j2807-tow-tests-the-standard

If there is “optional cooling content” that’s not required for the stated GCWR, the truck will be tested without those aids. In addition to a vehicle’s base curb weight, the “Tow Vehicle Total Weight” (TVTW) for testing for ¾- and 1-ton trucks allocates 150 pounds for the driver, 150 pounds for a passenger, the weight of all tow package equipment, and 100 pounds of optional equipment (hitch ball, weight distribution bars, and such) split evenly between the front and rear axles. The chassis content required (suspension, steering, brakes, and so on) is “immaterial to this section as long as it does not affect propulsion/powertrain selection or final drive ratio.”

That was a good article Mike. Thanks for sharing.

In my opinion, they were just testing 3/4 and 1 ton HD trucks, and the wording could be better for sure.

The SAE J2807 test procedures are designed to level the playing field in trailer tow ratings for all vehicles model year 2013 or later. The foreword reads:
“Light truck, minivan, sport utility, and crossover vehicles represent a significant portion of the North American vehicle mix, and trailering usage of these vehicles has increased. Heavier-duty models, approaching medium-duty trucks and often intended for trailering, have become more popular as well. Some passenger cars are also rated to tow trailers. For many vehicles, trailer weight rating may be a major marketing point.

Do heavier tires take away from your payload? I always thought the payload was based mainly on the suspension. Since the tires are unsprung weight, do they affect your payload?

Yes, they do unfortunately. They increase the curb weight of your truck, which in turn reduces your trucks payload. They don't make any consideration for sprung weight vs. curb weight.

And the once again the SAE towing standard pops up. Yes, it does account for two people and hitch weight.....for towing. However, that doesn't do jack squat for your GVWR. You still can't be over your payload limit. The standard doesn't magically allow you to bump up your GVWR by 300+ lbs.

Here you go. You’d be amazed at how much you can learn from the owners manual!
You’ll also need to estimate weight of mods or get truck weighed empty and compare that number to you payload sticker. Also tonque weight can change depending on how much weight is in the trailer as well as load distribution. I tow a 6000 lb trailer which weighs around 7000 fully loaded. Maybe a tad more and the truck does great. Granted I have sway bars and airbags but even before that it towed like a beast!

It's the super helpful and informative threads like this one that keep me coming back to this forum. I always learn new things, or I am given proper refreshers for things. Just wanted to say thank you to all our helpful and constructive members!

I am toying with the idea of getting a camper in a few years, and though towing capaicity regs and such are available, it is nice to see things specific to the Tundra.

Where does it say it accounts for 2 people? I thought it did but the manual contradicts that as shown above in the “two people” scenario.

It says it in the towing standard. I'll see if I can dig it up. It is part of the standard when they set up the tests that it requires. In reality, it doesn't do squat for you being able to carry more weight. It is often misinterpreted, in my opinion, and people seem to think that they get this 300+ bonus. But, as the manual hints at - you don't. So, your post helps with this.

    Yes, Yes, and again Yes.

Toyota specifies "Vehicle Capacity Weight", not SAE tow ratings. "Vehicle Capacity Weight" is described as "Occupants + luggage (read gear)" in the owner manual. "Vehicle Weight Capacity" is also specified more accurately on the driver doorjamb sticker. It reflects any reductions due to Toyota modifications. Any capacity reductions from options such as SR5 Upgrade Package, port added options such as spray-on bed liner, and special addition package including tube steps, etc. will reflected there with a additional warning tag: "CAUTION: LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY REDUCED. Modifications to this vehicle have reduced the original load carrying capacity by XX kg or XXX lbs.". Any modifications weight that you have added to the truck ALSO has to be subtracted off as part of the payload. Larger than stock tires and wheels won't count against payload (Vehicle Capacity Weight), because they are "unsprung weight".

If you're having trouble meeting the payload (Vehicle Capacity Weight) using the actual tongue weight, then you need to stow luggage and gear in the trailer to reduce your "luggage". If you can't meet the specified payload with actual tongue weight, your wife, and dog, then you need a bigger truck.
