Is the fuel “Range” a tank estimate, or just an estimate of when the light will come on?

Wife drove my truck yesterday and I found it with 7 miles left on the range. Wife said the light never came on so she wasn’t worried - when does the light come on?

My light comes on with about 20 miles to "empty". As said above still have about 6 gallons when it hits 0. But mines a 2013. maybe it's changed.

I have a 26 gallon tank on my crewmax. My fuel low level light came on. Filled up immediately -> 20 gallons. Simple math.

My gas light comes on with 20> miles and then stays on when it hits 0. Like others, this usually means I have 5.5-6.5 gallons left (about 75 miles).

now if your wife was heavy on the pedal, it could have not shown the low fuel light until the computer re-calculated mpg and then when you turned on the truck, the remaining miles would be less than when the truck was turned off.
