Thinking of taking the leap to a Tundra from a Silverado.. OPINIONS?

Sooo.... i have had the same silverado 2500hd crew cab 4x4 with a duramax for about 13 years.. Happy with the truck, its just starting to have little things go wrong here and there.. so, ive got my eyes on a new crewmax 4x4.. thinking about putting a 3/1 leveling kit on it with some moto metal rims and nitto ridge grapplers... will i be happy? lol

 

How do you use the Duramax? How much do you tow?

 

for years ive only driven back and forth to work. i used to tow more often, now i only pull my boat to the boat ramp. boat is probably 3000 lbs..

 

Crew Max is nice. Plenty of room. Can handle towing your boat too.

 

Since your truck is 13 years old you have not got used to all the little tech add ons common now days. While a new Tundra will have more than your current truck it won’t offer the same as a current big 3. The Tundra would be a great choice if you’re looking to hang on to it long term.
It will pull your boat like it’s not even behind you.

this may sound stupid but, i kinda like the rough ride of my 2500, i havent driven the tundra yet, im sure it is a very smooth riding truck?? my wife has a 2019 tacoma crew trd and it rides too much like a car for me..

Fuel economy, or lack there of. That's offset by the number of panties that get dropped as you roll by in a badass Tundra though.

I've driven quite a few GM/Chev 2500HD and 3500HD for work. The Tundra will feel more nimble. The gas engine will perform differently than the diesel you're used to. Overall though, I think you'll like it.

 

If BFG KO2’s on 20” wheels, came with those as the TSS package when I bought it. I haven’t had experience with the truck on regular all season tires but the ride on these tires is pretty good on a really smooth road but you do feel it when the road is less than smooth so as mine is set up it “rides like a truck” and even on some smooth roads I get a slightly “bouncy” ride so not sure what might be causing that. Overall it’s a solid truck, I have the 4.6 and it tows our boat just fine. Also fuel economy is not great...I knew that going in but I can’t seem to average above 15 ever, and 80% of my commute is highway so it’s a little lower than I expected but that may also be a function of the AT tires as well.

You will be paying for reliability with a Tundra.

 

I came from an 06 2500hd gasser.. not once have I regretted buying the Tundra! My brother was so impressed he sold his Ford and bought a 2018 1794 edition!

 

Test drive one. Tundras are way different than Tacoma. Tacoma feels like you’re sitting in the floor of the truck and throttle is horrendous

Not that you will need it but just in case.

 

You will need it if you keep it long enough. It depends on where you live. Some climates are not very kind to some of the mechanicals on these trucks.
Read up on AIP's and cam tower leakage.

Just keep the Silverado. You'll still be money ahead.

113,000 RATTLE FREE miles! New water pump at 108,000 miles and that’s it. Just installed the ToyTec Boss kit, the factory shocks were starting to fade? Good excuse I guess!

 

If there’s nothing wrong with your truck why get rid of it?

I dumped a Sierra for reliability problems. It was a nicer truck than the Tundra but it’s a tool for work so reliability was concern one for me. The Tundras frame flex is something you will have to get used to as it does jiggle the cab a bit more than the hydro formed fully boxes frame rails in Chevy allow for.

The engine trans combo in the Tundra are gems compared to the newer ones from the big three. It’s not constantly looking for the right gear or dropping cylinders to save mileage, which is nice. That said you will be losing a bucket of low end grunt coming from a Diesel.

All in all it will be a different experience for you. It was a different experience for me but one that as of, 15k miles seems, to have been the right one.

That’s a great way to put it. I couldn’t believe how tiny the Taco is inside. When I test drove a 2019, I expected it to be like my 4Runner except with a bed. But it’s NOTHING like the 4Runner inside. More like a Camry. A Camry with a bed.

 

I had a 2005 Sierra 2500 Duramax for a number of years. Yes, things started going wrong, so I sold that and got my second Tundra. I'm glad I went back to a Tundra. Love my truck. Plus I was tired of having to turn my diesel off at the drive through window so they could hear me.... and now it smells better as well! Crew Max is nice, but I wanted more bed space so I got a doublecab.

 

My son has a 19 Tacoma, it’s a small truck, but it’s always been small, I like his truck but you can’t compare with a Tundra, or any other full-size crew can pick up. His is a nice ride.

 

I had a deleted 2008 Duramax 2500 LTZ before this Tundra. I miss the sound and smell and overall power of that truck. There are even some days that I wish that I would have kept it. However, I no longer needed a diesel since we sold our fifth wheel and the 2500 was just too much truck for a daily driver. Not to mention maintenance costs were more expensive and the cost of diesel here in vermont is .40 cents more than regular. Owning a diesel only makes sense if you need more payload and towing capacity than a gasser. As much as I miss the romantic notion of my Dmax this Tundra makes more sense. Also, the newer diesel emissions systems are not that reliable. Repairs WILL be expensive when (not if) the diesel emissions fail outside of warranty coverage.

 

And yes, as Chris stated earlier, due to the extreme speed capabilities of the Super White Tundras you will be required to sign a waiver at the dealership prior to taking it home. These white trucks are not for beginners.

 

As mentioned earlier you’ll want to get white to offset that low end torque loss coming from the diesel. Sold my 04 Silverado last week. Have a couple hundred miles on the new tundra. Still giggling when rumbling away from stop lights.
