Bad response

I installed K&N cold air intake now have hesitation under hard throttle, any advice?
It is 2015 XSP Tundra.

 

Possibly oil on the air flow sensor? Can happen if you apply too much

 

Did you disconnect battery during install? This is important for the ECM to learn new fuel/air setup.

 

Yes I did the battery disconnect during install.

 

I installed a K&N air filter on my last truck. It ended up clogging my ECM sensor. I think it is because of all the oil that was on the filter. I replaced with a wix air filter and cleaned my sensor and never had an issue after that. Since then I have strayed away from K&N filters.

No problem. If your sensor is clogged you can buy the ECM sensor cleaner at the auto parts store. It comes In an aerosol can.

 

I have heard some folks swear by AFE......I have NO experience with them but they are dry...no oil

I installed one of these dry filters after installing my BAMuffler, no issues and the throttle response is improved. It's better than OEM.

 

OEM air filter is better, better, did I say better?

 

A K&N drop in or complete cai kit? If the kit, make sure no leaks. I've used K&Ns since the 70's with zero issues. It's possible to over oil but they come properly oiled new. Re-oiling isn't rocket science. MAFs are easy to check. My 07 had a K&N on for 5 years and my MAF was clean as a whistle. Posted a pic of it on my build thread. An improper seal will cause the hesitation you described.

 

What's an ECM sensor? You mean the MAF sensor?

 

Bought my Tundra with a K&N filter installed, so I don’t know if the battery was disconnected. Can you just disconnect it to rectify?

 

That’s what I use. I never really understood the whole concept of an “oiled filter”. Sure they catch particles and trap it in the oil but I’m not sure how much more efficient it is than a dry filter. For k&n to make all these horsepower and torque claims, the filter element must be thinner which allows for more airflow. I guess that’s why it’s oiled to help compensate for the thinner element.

The same as OEM only better than OEM because it can be cleaned and it doesn't let dust in.

 

resetting the ecu should be standard fare when doing intake stuff. It's way too sensitive to changes. When I put on the TRD air flow accelerator and removed the charcoal filter I thought it would be fine because I still had the OEM air filter in there. Well the first time I went WOT the motor stalled. Oops. Drove home and unplugged the battery for ten minutes and let it re-learn. Ran great ever since.
