What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Help me justify my purchase

Very blessed I don't have frame issues because I would not be satisfied without putting a real frame on. Safe-T-Cap would be my last choice but that's personal choice.

 

Being able to see is a good thing haha. I think I'm going to tie a light bar into my high beams too. I don't really need the light unless I'm off road, but I need to add load to the passenger side headlight circuit so my high beam indicator comes on anyway. Might as well add that load with more light!

 

I am getting ready to do this same thing with the 906S, so I am going to clutter up this thread by sticking all this right here for easy finding during install.

Agreed... To a point.. It's not really feasible for me to purchase a replacement frame as I don't have the equipment to pull the engine and body off the old frame. I've read many good things about the Safe-T-Cap frame kit and haven't heard any bad stories about them. At this point I've spent a total of 3500 dollars on this project (including the purchase price) so I don't feel like I'm in over my head.

The process of rebuilding the truck is what I'm looking forward to.

It's all about the journey...

 

Totally and whole heartedly agree and in no way am I questioning your or anyone elses decision. My new frame comment was more rhetorical than actual and simply glad my journey does not entail worrying about a frame. Simply commented and unfortunately for whatever reason, my comments have gotten misconstrued in the past and I'm paying for it....You do You !

 

Got my metra dash kit and USB extension plug so I finished off my headunit install. The metra kit left a tiny gap along the left edge but it's fine. Very happy with the Kenwood DMX706S.

 

Clean install! But that big white charger sticks out like a sore thumb - you need one of these guys:


Most flush charger I’ve been able to find, my OCD approves.

 

Happy to see that the gap indeed is not that noticeable....now I just have to decide between the 706 or 906....rock, paper, scissors !
As a side note, I was going to comment that I wish is it was warm enough here for AC but then I noticed the HU is showing 48F

 

I have this one in my F150. It's small enough the little dash door folds over it and you wouldn't even know it's there until you open the little door. Going to get another one for me Tundra.

 

No, I actually bought a limited color matched grille off toyota because limiteds didnt come with the chrome. Than I had a friend wrap the bottom chrome strip with piano black. I want to get a limited front bumper eventually but for now this good. Here is the part number for the grille 53100-0C110-C0 and I got it from toyota colorado springs online store.
I am pretty sure they had all colors and it was only 200 when I bought it.

Painting the bottom chrome would be cheaper but My friend hooked me up, If the wrap ever falls off I will either get a new bumper or paint the chrome piece.

 

Ordered some CoverKing Neosupreme seat covers from Car ID. Should be here in a few weeks. Hope they fit well.

So, did some MORE cleaning of the nearly 20-year old, very-neglected engine bay and put some clamps on my power steering reservoir lines.

It was SO grimy before - about 1/8" inch of grease/grime covering most everything I could see. Did a degrease/soak/rinse a few days ago, and did some finer detail today (since it's above freezing for once...):


It's not feather duster clean like @Professional Hand Model ... but it's getting closer.

p.s. Yes, I know my power steering fluid is low now. Fixing that today too, LOL.

 

Looks good! It took me a few stages to get it proper, as well. Did you work on that PS cap looseness?

 

Well done sir! I'm currently on the feather duster engine bay phase too! I wonder if replacing the PS cap would help? Or if it's hard to replace the leaking lines. Hose clamps might be a band-aid.

 

Nope, haven't touched it yet. That's one of my weekend projects. I wanted to start with it clean, LOL.

 

Replacing those lines is $$$. Its an entire a$$y. The big box hose snake clamps are better than the worn out tired spring clamps. Going on a year and a half and no leaks.

Try cleaning your cap and readjusting the rubber boot inside to change and refresh the position memory it developed. Mine seems tighter.

 

I started with that one. Eventually the gap bugged me enough to try another.

Memory is a bit fuzzy, but I recall I didn't want to use the plastic side brackets. I glued it to the old metra pieces and trimmed them to fit the original metal brackets.

 

Do all double din head units require a trim piece like this?

 

Anyone run tinted corners and clear front? Feel like it would look cool but I have only ever seen this truck with the setup. I can only find tint headlights and corners but I dont like the idea of running tinted headlights.

 

Check your State Laws. Many would not allow this.

 

even is its just the corners? Makes sense for front headlights but I thought maybe corners could be ok. I saw a tundra a few days ago woth both tinted.

 

Ten hi ally yes it’s illegal almost everywhere in the states.

is it enforced? Depends on if you behave or Catch an officer on a bad day.

Decided my weekend started NOW (since the wife decided to go visit a friend) so I pulled the cap off, cleaned it and put back together - and you're right, it feels tighter. Also topped up all my fluids and threw 6oz of seafoam in the crankcase to do some work until next oil change later this week.

Then ...

• I fixed my slow-to-no-retract seatbelts (sanded the inside of the seatbelt shoulder d-ring with strips of 200, 400 and then 800 grit sandpaper, then cleaned everything);
• I fixed my creaky/squeaky dash (passenger side was where most of the noise was, up where the dash meets the windshield) by cleaning behind (using microfiber cloths on trim tools, lol) and then hiding a bit of backer rod down under/between the glass and the dash;
• I positioned/aimed all my lights properly (including my lightbar which was way too downward angled for my liking);

Then I went for a beautifully quiet test-drive to make sure everything worked as it should, stopped at 7-11 for a celebratory Slurpee and then came home and watched my seatbelt retract all the way to its proper resting place before going in the house with a great feeling of satisfaction.

 

I probably wouldn't run tinted corner lights because they might be hard for others to see, but not all laws are enforced. I've run illegal window tint my entire life without issue. One has to way the risk vs reward.

 

I might tint my corner lights because the clear ones allow a bunch of light to scatter. So much light scatters with my switchback LEDs that it lights up the snow above and in front of my hood. So I switch to dimmer switchbacks, dimmer regular LEDs, tint the housings, or go to regular bulbs.
