2000 Toyota Tundra Crank / No Start

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra v8 4.7L 2x2 that is cranking like a champ but will not catch and start. I have tried replacing the fuel filter but that did help. A friend removed the fuel pump relay and laid a wire across and we heard the fuel pump turn on, tried to start it then but still no start. Went ahead and replaced the fuel pump relay but again, no change. I ran my code tester on it but the only code it gave me was P0420, catalytic below threshold in bank 1. Pulled spark plug and tested for spark, had spark. Do not have any RPM when trying to start. I have been told all sorts of possibles, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, etc. but before just randomly replacing any more parts, I figured I'd try tossing this problem out on a Toyota expert forum. So anyone here have any advice?

When was the last time your timing belt was replaced? This exact scenario happened to a friend last month and it wouldn't turn over because his timing belt had snapped. Granted it was a Nissan XTerra but the symptoms you are describing are the exact same. Truck would crank like nothing was wrong but wouldn't roll over.

 

Bought the truck 3 or 4 years ago, have never replaced the timing belt, only coil packs other than what I recently replaced trying to solve this problem.

 

How many miles are on the truck? I would try to get eyes on that belt.

Check if you're getting a spark. Could be distributer. Open the oil filler cap, have a buddy crank it over, if the timing belt failed, you won't see movement.

 

I replaced the timing belt on my 2000 4.7 tundra and pulled the wires loose from my crank shaft sensor and it would crank but not start.Repaired the wires and it fired up.that was my experience. If it is cranking faster than usual then it could be the timing belt.I h ave a friend who had their timing belt break twice and didn't hurt the engine.

 

It may have never been replaced or it was replaced once and was due again. Supposed to be done every 9 years or 90,000 miles.

 

We have already checked for spark, it has a spark. One thing I did forget to mention is that we also sprayed starter fluid into the air intake and it still would not start. Turns over fine, but just never catches or even makes a sound of trying to catch. It turns over fine, does not sound fast or anything, just normal sound of car trying to start. However that is all it does is turn over, it does not even make a sound like it is catching at all.

 

Check for fuel, thats pretty easy, just disconnect a fuel line stick it in a cup and have someone crank.

If you have fuel, spark and air, the issue is TIMING.

 

Ok I will try that. A few people have said that it may be the crankshaft position sensor, that it is dead and telling the engine not to start.

 

Someone had your same problem not long ago. Try looking this issue up and possibly you will find it. A lot of responses were given.

So, your trk always ran great and always started easy until recently.
What condition is your motor? Strong, good or getting weak? Is it blowing smoke out the tail pipe, or burning oil and you can smell it?

Were you driving and the motor just cut out on you w/o stuttering, kicking, bucking, making any type of unusual noise and since hasn't started?
Or was the trk running good, parked and since hasn't started. If so, how long was the truck parked until someone tried to start it? A day, two, few months or more? Or did you just buy it after the owner pulled it out from his barn.

Do you live in an area where critters love to chew on a vehicles wires.

Let's rule out bad gas due to the gas lid is always locked to prevent the kids from pouring something in the tank. And, you didn't fill at the gas station when their tanks were being pumped full with new fuel, so the gas is fresh w/o sediment issue from gas station tanks.

You checked and are getting good strong spark from all eight coils, and the plugs are gapped right and good to go? You say fuel pump sounds like it's running, but is fuel getting to the injectors with good pressure? And while turning over the motor you don't hear any unusual noise?
Did the wife drive the vehicle, overheat it and fry the motor, probably not.

Would help others with same problem in the future if you say what the problem part was. Also, those that responded would also be interested.

Should get a repair manual for the trk since you want to fix things on it, and not pay a mechanic to do it.

Ok a lot of questions to answer here lol. Truck had infrequent misfire randomly now and then over the last couple months. The check engine light was on most of the time the last couple months but would sometimes go off for a day or 2 then come back on. The misfire seemed to happen more often if I had the AC running or when I was going up an incline. The day that it died it did a larger than usual misfire, almost stall out, but then worked through it. I drove about 3 miles to my house after that and parked it for an hour. Then I got in it to run to the store and it had trouble starting, took 5 or 6 tries to get it to start. Was just turning over and not catching. Then it started, I drove down my street which is about a half mile long, halfway to the end it did another large misfire, almost stall out and worked through it, I stopped at the stop sign and sat there for a minute deciding if I wanted to risk getting too far from my house. I decided to turn around and take it home but then noticed it had died, the engine was off. I tried to start it and it would not start, just cranked and crank but no start. I spent about 15 minutes and about 35 tries before it finally started. I drove it back down the street to my house and it died as I was pulling in the driveway and has not been able to start again since. I had a quarter tank of gas when this happened and have gone to the gas station with a gas container and added another 2 gallons since. I have a locking gas cap on it. A mechanic friend tested the spark, he unhooked something, attached it to a screw driver then stuck the screw driver to metal and told me to start it, he said there was spark. The 2000 toyota tundra does not have a full pressure check valve so I have not checked the pressure.

I think that was all the questions, hopefully this helps someone have an idea to suggest and helps anyone with this problem in the future.

No not yet, he is battling cancer and had a bad day yesterday. As soon as he can get to it I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

 

Misfire, meaning backfire? Backfire is the timing.

 

Bad news there, you have to take it easy on the guy and not put him to work. Hope his health turns around for the better.

 

Like a sputtering in the engine, like it was having a hard time. Someone riding with me said it was like a valve misfiring.

 

Have you checked the MAF sensor for debris? Can also cause no start.

 

Someone here has the answer, I don't. I used to work on vehicles before computers became a reality, so I'm no good here.

If a clogged fuel injector continually struggles to disperse fuel to the engine, a time will come when it misses the fuel supply completely and the engine will misfire. I have not, Like I said I know nothing about vehicles, just computers. Was Really hoping to just plug in the code tgester and it spit out a code I could look up that would tell me what was wrong, but no such luck. I will try cleaning the MAF sensor because that seems pretty easy. Other than that hopefully the noid light will shed some light on the problem, *pun intended*

 

Seeing as how you have/had a check engine light, you need to have to code checked and report back.

 

Get a can of MAF sensor spray, and don't touch the wire with your fingers or poke at it with something.

I ran my code scanner on it but it only reported code P0420: Catalytic converter below threshold in bank 1.

The misfires a couple months ago sounds like your timing belt has possible damaged teeth. I would change the timing belt and water pump.regular maintenance.there are great you tube videos on changing the timing belt and water pump.it takes me about 3 hrs to change mine.that's belt ,water pump,idler pulley,belt tensioner, serpentine belt,anti freeze and cleaning the mag sensor and throttle body.

 

UPDATE: PROBLEM FIXED

Went to autozone and did the loaner program for a noid light, put it on, cranked the truck and no light. Changed out the crankshaft position sensor and BAM, truck started right up.



The CEL was also off, but after driving around for a while it did do the misfiring again a little and at the end of the night the CEL popped back on. But for now it starts so I am happy!

 

Excellent. Might I recommend you still replace your timing belt. Doesn't sound like it's ever been replaced.

 

I agree on the timing belt.It may be the cause of the misfires
