Thinking more and more of leaving NY for many many reasons but number one is the snow.
    I hate it.
Lets not talk about the laws and everything else we can't discuss here.

I am thinking of moving to Florida.

    Questions:

When you moved did you have a job or did you move and look?
How do you get people to want to interview you out of state?

I currently have about $30,000 in cash and would have a little more by selling things I wont be taking with me but that would only be a couple grand at most.

Looking for a job in Florida from NY is a pain in the ass but moving there with no job and only $30,000 is a risk I dont know if i want to take.

I am in the I.T. field and in NY if I put my resume out there get a few calls a week and a couple interviews with a job offer pretty quick.

I apply to jobs in Florida and they look at it, thats about it.

For the record I will not bring any NY "values" with me.

I lived in Orlando before and thinking of Tampa or Jacksonville

    Lost track after #1.
When I was young, full of energy, and without worldly possessions, I just moved and rolled with any punches that came my way. Now that I'm post-black-balloon-birthday age and have stuff I'd rather not lose or dip into, I'd want to have all my ducks in a row before making a move like that.

I've relocated to 5 different states, sometimes with a job waiting for me - sometimes without one. You should not have a problem finding a job in your field, just network and make yourself visible to headhunters. Choose your Florida location wisely, and try to avoid south Florida.

If at all possible, move yourself with a big U-haul pulling your vehicle on a trailer. Moving companies have a nasty habit of holding your property hostage when you are relocating to another state.

Don't overlook Georgia and South Carolina, both are very good places to live and rarely have snow that sticks around for more than a day or two.

I've done it a few times. The first couple were for the military and I was young and didn't really put much thought into it.

I moved the whole family from Georgia to South Carolina about 5 years ago. We were moving for a job offer I received. The hardest part was we had to do a two part move so my wife could stay behind and let one of the boys finish his senior year in high school. Well, that, and selling a house when you live in another state is a real pain in the arse. Our first realtor sucked, didn't check on the house regularly even though she knew we were out of state. The house was broken into and most appliances were stolen. Once we fired her and hired a new agent, things went a little better.

I was going to tell you that my sons both lived in Florida and hated pretty much everything about it, but since you've lived there before you should know what to expect.

As for looking for a job out of state, I'd say talk to some recruiters that can sell your resume and know that you're moving. A lot of employers may not want to deal with out of state interviews and such. I was able to do one Skype interview and two visits to the city/firm I where I was going. But it was a lot easier travel since it was only a 2-3 hour drive. Include a cover letter with your resume any time you submit it and be clear in the cover letter that you are already moving to that city (not just considering it, or looking for a Company to pay for you to come there); that might entice some reluctant employers.

I 2nd the Ga/SC recommendation. We didn't hate Atlanta (other than the traffic) and we love Upstate SC (Greenville). Very little snow, though we are expecting a couple inches today. The job market is pretty strong for employees in both places. I know the last opening I had to fill was tough to find available candidates.

When we moved, we had more than 10 years of accumulated crap in our house. Took a dumpster and multiple trips to the dump and/or goodwill to clean it all out.

Moved from Chicago Burbs to Tempe AZ end of 2018. Got tired of snow and Illinois taxes. Wife and I both had IT jobs that let us work from anywhere so that part was relatively easy.
We made it point for weeks beforehand to minimize the amount of shit we'd have to bring with us. Sold off big stuff that didn't make sense to pay to have moved, dining table/china cabinets, sofas, entertainment centers etc. We were able to fit all of our things in a PODS storage container. PODS picked up our container on the day our house closed in Illinois and stored it. We rented a furnished apartment in the area in AZ while we worked with a realtor to find a place to buy. 2 months later when we found our current place, PODS delivered the rest of our things.

We chose the Phoenix area mostly because of the weather and also because should something with our remote jobs change, there's a pretty big tech presence here that should make finding a job easier.

Are you working with anyone in the area you are thinking of moving? Like Tech recruiters and the like? As much as I dislike the people that work at those places (they always gave me a weird vibe) a lot of bigger companies only work thru approved recruiting firms and I have gotten decent gigs working with them.

I did and about to do it again. Tampa is nice. I get contacted by recruiters in Tampa every couple of months about MS365/Azure AD admin positions. I would have taken one of the positions if we weren't planning on leaving this place. FL is... Not my cup of tea. It's honestly just where I live; the swamp. I think it's MUCH easier to get call backs if you're IN the state. Employers don't want to entertain the idea of paying for relocation. Before moving here, I applied to many jobs and didn't get a single call. I started getting calls once I had an address and could commit to an in-person interview. We work in IT, we're not unicorns; many companies would rather wait for someone local to apply. $30k is pretty decent around here. Tampa is probably more expensive than Jax, but, for me, I prefer Jax. Tampa has that lazy beach vibe. Jax has a more diverse feel. There is more variety in the neighborhoods.

I haven't but will contact a few of them in the area.

I am not a fan of them either but they seem to look at me more than the company hiring.

So I am originally from FL, but lived in Hawaii for 18 years and just recently moved back to Florida...now my circumstances were/are a bit different as I was retiring out of the Army, so I had a pension paying out monthly.....but guess to my point Tampa and Jacksonville are both huge military areas with the Navy in Jax and Air Force in Tampa with huge amounts of IT jobs. I actually currently work as a contractor for the Navy in Pensacola. Make sure you are hitting up Booze Allen and General Dynamics as they both have a plethora of contracts with DOD, military contract work pays very well and the hours are great and you follow their holiday schedule which is every Federal Holiday. Lot of benefits working with/for DOD.
When I got back to Florida I didn't have a job lined up and really didn't work for almost a year...but like i said a little different as I had a retirement pension...all i can say is way of life! Do what will make you happy, everything tends to work out and no state tax is nice

Jax is robust, but I would want to live a little south and west of the city.

When you apply to FL do you tell them your are not looking for a moving expense? They might be passing just because they don't want to have to offer money to move is my thought. IT you should be able to go to any state you want.

    Yes,
I let them know I will cover all expense including airfare to and from an interview. I am available for a phone interview any time and an in person interview with a day or two notice.
I can fly down and back up the same day. I have done it a few hundred times lol

    Hmm that's strange..

Lived in Florida as a kid in the 80's for a year, it's a nice place to visit but I can't take that heat and humidity all year long. Very strange being outside in a pool on Christmas LOL

My last move was from SW CT to central MA. No way would I have been able to move without a job in place. The sticking point for us was the sale of our house which as a great house in a great town but it was a large 3600sqft ranch. Most young people want colonials and for old people where a ranch is ideal (they don't have to use stairs) 3600sqft was too big. Job started 09/02/14 and we put the house on the market 02/01/2014. Well on 09/01/2014 the house hadn't sold so my wife asked me what I was going to do? I said, I'm going to get in the car at 4:15am tomorrow morning and I'm going to drive 2 ½ hours to work. That went on for about 10 months and probably took years off my life. I'd get home at 8PM (sometimes drive home was 3 ½ hours), eat, shower and go to bed to get up at 3:45am and do it all over again. Now I live 12 mins from work. So I don't know if you have a house to sell but that's my story. Everything else was smooth.

I'm just outside of jax and I have friends in l.T. that I can introduce you with.

Get everything in order, so when you do get an offer, you do not have to figure out what to do next.

There are lots of IT related jobs available. I would not move without knowing that I have something lined up, but I have a family to take care of - it sounds like you are single, so that makes it a lot easier. If you move without having a job lined up; if you really have to, Walmart/Publix/Target is always hiring help cover daily expenses to help you stretch your savings a little until you find something. Only bad thing about that is that it looks bad on your resume if you have a break in your IT jobs experience, but it is an option and can be explained.

Florida is not my cup of tea. Nice to visit but way over populated. I’ve lived in Charleston SC for a couple years and it was pretty nice. Great beaches. I’m leaning towards AZ or Hawaii. Maine has such a lack of sunlight

Well if overpopulated is a deal breaker, you wouldn't like Hawaii (well Oahu for sure) Big Island and Kauai aren't as bad but less opportunities for work....and don't forget its ridiculously expensive

I have moved from AZ to WA about 9 years ago. My wife and I both had kind of dead-end jobs that we were ok with leaving. We had some money saved up and decided to make the move without jobs. It was relatively hard to get interviews that far away, and even if I did, was I willing to fly up there for an interview? Probably not unless it was a very good opportunity. Once we found a rental place, we started applying for jobs like crazy and luckily were able to get jobs within a few weeks.

Now to a few years ago, we ironically moved back to the same city we moved from in AZ. I have a job with a company I was able to just make a lateral move and they paid for moving expenses such as a moving truck and fuel. My wife just finished nursing school and was able to get a job with a hospital here in AZ shortly after we moved back.

Now that I am with a good company that has locations around the nation, I don't think I would ever move somewhere without a new position lined up. My wife being a nurse can pretty much work anywhere there is a hospital.

Oahu is 590 sq miles with one million people. It’s insanely overpopulated. The Traffic is horrendous and the housing is unaffordable.

Oahu remains the only island with any work and the culture shock of moving from the mainland to Hawaii is pretty intense. The pay here is low and most jobs pay less than their equivalents on the mainland In, High cost of living, cities. Many people work more than one job to cover the bills.

It is absolutely beautiful here if you can find the time between both of your low paying jobs to enjoy it.

I always laugh when I watch (I watch a lot of HGTV...don't judge ) shows like buying paradise or some crap and they make it "seem" so affordable....most people have no idea that to get a single family home $700k is your starting point and even at that you will probably need some major renovations....sold my condo (1300sqft 3bd 2bth, no yard just 2 parking stalls) in Mililani before i left in 2018 for $548k.....moved back to FL after 18yrs of living there and bought a brand new build 3,000sqft home for $350k....and no more H1 traffic :)

Median home price is up over 800k now, It’s insane. H1 traffic somehow continues to get worse with every passing year despite their best efforts... taxes are going up constantly to cover the cost of the rail. It’s shocking how much it costs to live here.

I recently moved from N.C. to MT. My wife got a great job that will pay off her student loans in about 2 years so it was a no brainer for us. I work remotely so anywhere is good with me. You only live (and die) once so if you really want to go, don’t have any regrets. In your field, I would bet you can find a job somewhere.

Live without the sun for three weeks, when it comes out for two hours you are sitting in an office. By the time you get out it is back to sunless.
Then you get to see it on the news that the sun was out for two hours.

The fucking sun coming out makes the news!

I grew up in New England. I’m well acquainted with the lack of sun. If it wasn’t from the rain or snow it was from the sun coming up while you were at work, or school, and going down before you got home.

It was reason enough to move to Hawaii. Having been here for over 20years of perpetual summer I miss the seasons and I have had enough sun for a lifetime.

I honestly think, at this point in my life, that 10-15 years is about as long as anyone should live anywhere before trying out something different. Life is just too short not to experience new places and things and people.
