I think my rep got the quote wrong on the price. I'd bet it's $1,200k in labor and $300 for the part. I just wanted a video of a guy replacing one and it's a ton of labor. I found what looked like the part for about $300.

12 hours to replace the bearing? I doubt it. Assuming $100 an hour.

I'm at 63k miles. In a short discussion with the service rep, I didn't feel like trying to work the warranty was going to produce any fruit.

Fair assessment. Not sure what their labor rates are here in Colorado Springs but I'd bet it's north of $100/hr.

I don't know how but I totally missed your two updates. You got bigger problems than a bearing drop.

I bet they are right on the parts price. They may be taking the easy route and just replacing the entire prop shaft assembly, which they may have to do if the yokes are messed up from smacking into the cross member.

Otherwise parts are only a $2-300 for OEM carrier bearing 37230-34050 (4wd) and one u joint 04371-0C084 (4wd) assuming the closest joint is toast or damaged upon removed. Labor should only be a few hours on that still. U joints are a driveway job (not this time of year!). 30mm socket, impact, snapring pliers, couple of BFHs.

Here's a simple video showing how to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvC7Iy3RKog

Back from my trip, Rough Country drop kit parts did not arrive (after paying extra for shipping) but I got my truck back from the dealership.

Asked a local repair shop to quote me for replacing the carrier bearing for my truck and they came back with $500. It has to be a drive shaft replacement as well. Tomorrow I'll dig in a bit deeper and hopefully get some video of the drive shaft and bearing while driving.

    UPDATE 4

Rough Country carrier bearing drop kit finally installed. Sorry the pic is focused in the wrong spot. You can note the chips in the paint and unseen are the dings in the cross member above it. Test driving so far looks like the shudder is gone. I have to figure out a slick way to mount my phone under the truck to get some video of it in action.

I'll report more when I get some more miles on the current fix.

@19TurdPro and all that weighed-in - a huge thank you!

Did you drop both bolts and then install the drop, because going off of memory it looks like you might have installed the carrier bearing upside down. There should be a hole on the bottom of it. Perhaps someone else can weigh in.

The more I look at this pic the more I think your carrier bearing is upside down. The flange/mounting bracket is offset from the center of the bearing by like 5/8 of an inch. If it was installed upside down it would bring the drive shaft closer to the cross member and cause more shudder (probably enough to smack the cross member) . The carrier bearing, when installed right should have one hole right in the center of the bottom. See pics. If it had a lot of miles on it installed upside down, I'd budget for a replacement soon-ish just to be cautious. Pretty easy DIY if you're savvy.

If it was installed upside down with a lift, there's a good chance this was causing your problems, and that there was enough shudder to cause slipping and engagement of the traction control.

I hate to nitpick, but are those washers adequate? You look to have less than 1mm of washer in contact at certain points, and it looks thin as hell. Mine look quite a bit larger. Your bolts and washers look like something out of Home Depot.

I noticed the same thing but I think they are good. They are the ones that came in the Rough Country kit I ordered. Also to note they screwed me on the shipping and am still trying to work with a 90% non-existent customer service capability there. They are not getting business from me in the future.

So.... is it fixed or is that ujoint and carrier bearing knackered from the abuse?

Why do they send new bolts? The OEM ones worked for me. I don't know that I'd fully trust those, but it's probably just the picture.

I have more thoughts on your issue, and especially with that carrier bearing being on upside down....
Typical levels will not drop the carrier bearing unless they are installing a shim (which they should), so why the hell was it upside down? Someone obviously took it off. Were they (the previous owner or wheel shop) trying to "fix" this issue before you? Did they mess with other suspension geometry in the process? It might be worth your while to have someone check it out, and check for excessive play in the bearing and U joint.

I just ran out to check my CB and it also is not in the position yours is in. Mine does not have a CB drop or appears to have ever been disassembled. I am not the original owner and can’t speak to its history, but the service work in Carfax doesn’t point to any work to the shaft. Most pics on the internet look to be positioned like yours so I may spin it just for the additional drop.

Just to be sure it's not a manufacturing difference, look at it. The mounting flange is offset from the center of the carrier bearing by about 5/8 of an inch. It needs to be installed so the least amount of bearing is facing up, otherwise it will be bringing your driveshaft closer to the cross member.

So far it's solid. I've not noticed any vibration under acceleration and when manipulated by hand doesn't seem to have excessive play. @19TurdPro led me down the right path the whole way. I do think that the CB took some abuse though. If it shows any signs of wearing out I'll replace it ASAP.

Washers replaced a few days ago. Seriously had to hunt for them at Lowe's but finally found the right ones with a good gauge of steel to strengthen the whole situation.

I still have not yet figured out a creative way to get a camera mounted under my truck to watch the drive train. I still have the occasional rough shift into second and I'm wondering if the bearing isn't worn out to the point that it allows a little play in that transition.

I also bought that Rough Country kit and it showed today. Embarrassing that they supplied those washers with the kit. I do like the wider base on this kit as it makes me feel like it supports the “feet” of the bearing bracket better. Hopefully I get under it tomorrow and able to reuse the factory hardware.

I highly doubt that's the cause. Low trans fluid and dirty trans fluid are the usual suspects. I'd start there.

I added 3/4 of an inch of drop and used the OEM hardware.
