Help me justify my purchase

I bought a 2001 tundra 4x4 trd limited with 129,000 miles on it a couple months ago for 7,500 bucks. Its got leather seats and is in very good condition as far as my eyes can tell. It had its frame replaced in 2012 so thats in good shape too especially for a illinois truck. My only complaint about it is dashboard creeks randomly, and my pinion bearing in my diff started to whine but whatever i can live with that. Ill replace it next year if need be. But i doubt it. I also dont know when the t-belt was done. And although the belt looks great when u peak under the covers I'm still going to change it at the end of the month. The transmission shifts super damn smooth too. No hickups and it downshifts flawlessly. But I'm starting to think i may have over paid. The truck is great especially for 19 years old. What do u guys think? I really like the 1st gens cause of the small size and the v8. Dont we all? But yea what do yall think?

 

With that mileage and being a limited/leather, I think you did alright if it's a 4x4. Old Toyota's in these parts are bringing $5K+ for 1990 and up models as long as they are four wheel drive.

I would simply move forward and not worry whether you under/over paid. That truck with new frame and someone that wishes to bring it back to life with just the things you mentioned, conceivably could be around for someone to enjoy hundreds of thousand miles/20 + yrs and no note.

 

I don't think you necessarily overpaid. The dash noise can be fixed if you check the thread we have on it.

You are good if she is in good shape as you say. The new frame is a bonus. You probably have newer stuff that was installed when the new frame was put on. @Festerw had his frame replaced and there was a full on list of extras that where performed at the same time.

Nothing personal, but you seem like a worrier. Maybe bake this into the equation moving forward and let it help you ahead of time. All in all looks like you have a great truck. The bearing and dashboard creaks are easily fixed. For a nearly 20 year old vehicle, you are doing pretty good as most vehicles are one and a half feet in the trash heap at this age.

Maybe try a timing belt replacement look up with Toyota for more info. I bet it has been done once already.

 

@Professional Hand Model thanks and i am/was a worrier. And yea i called and looked up on toyotas owners.com and they denied the belt change at the dealer. No idea if they got it changed somewhere else, but im just gonna bite the bullet and pay for it at the end of the month. Might aswell!

You got a clean, mostly bombproof truck. Nothing to justify. Enjoy

 

Look at your Truck....now look around you and what other vehicles would you rather have that cost $7500? You got a good deal.

 

You done good on that one...change the timing belt and drive it for another 100k I'd give ya 7500 for it all day long!

 

Generally, you get what you pay for. Used truck are always a crap shoot but yours looks good. Hell, you could have paid $5,500 for a truck that needed tires, brakes and had a rusty frame. Drive the hell out of it!

IMHO, you got a solid deal on a solid truck.

If there's no sticker indicating when the timing belt was changed, you have to assume it hasn't been. While I don't recommend it, we've had members who've gone 300K+ on the original timing belt, so it's not surprising yours still looks good. It's not a gamble I'd be willing to take.

 

@tvpierce yup. Gonna get it changed along with the water pump, camseals, and tensioners

 

Sold my 99 Tacoma, yes not a Tundra.....but a Toyota none the less for $12K and that was giving it away, because it was a good friend...had 220K on the odometer (still running like a champ BTW)...I mean obviously the truck was highly moded (link in my signature to my TW build page) but you cant really charge for mods....anyways, you got a good deal! and keep up with the maintenance and you will be happy for years to come, knowing you are driving the ever reliable Toyota!

 

In January, I just purchased an '06 SR5 4wd v8 with 162k, cloth interior, and the original (in good shape) frame for a hair more than you paid. My truck needs front rotors (warped omg), the parking brake fixed/adjusted, a slew of bulbs out, and a CSB (already fixed). I reckon we've both done well for midwestern 1st gen Tundras.

 

@chrisb What is a csb? And nice man congrats. My major repair needed in the future is my pinion bearing diff. Might just do a full rebuild

 

@chrisb My parking break is broken/needs adjustment too. Hahhaa im not gonna bother with it though tbh

 

Center Support Bearing.
The bearing in the middle of the driveshaft. Took me ~30 minutes even with temps in the teens that day.

I'm absolutely going to fix mine. These Toyota drums don't like to self-adjust unless the parking brake works right and I drive too much to be all front-brake. I'm also not inclined to crawl under my truck every few weeks to adjust the drums when I can just do it once and be done.

 

Well, for what it's worth, I bought my 2001 Limited TRD in January and I paid 2000.00 for it. It's got just over 171,000 miles on it. I've ordered/received a frame repair kit for it from Safe-T-Cap (really nicely made kit), all new front suspension components, new steering rack, Struts and Rear Shocks, Stabilizer links front and back, CSB and eventually I'll do the timing belt and the plugs. The bed has a few rust spots I'll be repairing and the paint needs a good cleaning.

It does run very well, shifts great and the leather is in decent condition. It's quite a bit of work, but I don't have much money into it yet...

For you to spend what you spent to get a completely sorted truck? Well worth it...
