who here has bought a blank g code key for the 4runners and have had them successfully programmed to work on the tundras? Anyone have an idea how much this roughly costs to get done as well?

I looked into this. The key can be found on eBay but I was quoted $150 to have it programmed at the dealership. I decided not to pull the trigger.

I just bought a flip out / switchblade style key from ebay (about $40) and a mobile locksmith came and cut/programmed it for $90. It works great

I bought an OEM G code key off eBay for a 4Runner for ~$30. Took it to a local key cutter/locksmith and had them try to cut and program it. They got it to start my truck, but the buttons for unlock/lock would not work. They still charged me $60 for the cut/program fee...

I then took it to the Toyota dealership and had them try to program it. No luck. They charged me $70 for a failed attempt to program it!

So all together I paid ~$160 for key that can start my truck and manually lock/unlock it.

I did read on here somewhere that someone was able to make it work. Not sure why mine didn’t. The dealer had no answer either. I would really like to have an integrated fob/key for less clutter and bulk in my pocket.

To add to my post above, I made sure I had the G code compatible key, but the add I used from ebay specifically stated the FCC ID# that was on the back of my key fob. If yours matches this, the key and buttons should all give you full functionality. FYI, I have a 2017 SR5 4x4 TRD Off Road.

This is the one I ordered, I hope this isn't a violation to post.

How long have you been running your flip key? Any issues with the flipping action or the key locking back into the fob when you close it?

Only about two weeks. I've had the truck for three weeks. Lol

Working fine so far, though it obviously hasn't been long. It's probably not the quality of an oem key, but I'm trying to be mindful of that as I use it

Yes, I bought a flip key on eBay. Even though I have the same fcc id, my locksmith said it was the wrong chip. He helped me remove the old chip, put in the correct one, cut the key using the key code, and programed both the chip and remote for me. Key/remote on eBay was around $40. Cutting and programming set me back $100. Works great so far.

I've tried this mod with no success. Do you remember what the locksmith said what the FCC ID was? I bought a different fob but yours seemed to work. Also, can you post the link you used on ebay to narrow down the search? Thanks in advance.

This is a neat upgrade. Doesnt seem too complicated if i can find a locksmith who would program it for me. Is there an oem version? Wonder what that costs

This is the one I bought but the locksmith said my key was different chip so he took out the chip and put in the correct one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/361557188520

He had a handheld device to check the chip id on the stock key to verify. I don't remember the id # of the stock key that the device said

I had the same experience. Seems to be hit and miss if the key and fob will work.

Check out my posts in this thread. Cliff notes: Truck is a 2018. Bought this key https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072YG9PP1/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_6kubEbWVWJTDW and cut out my transponder and glued it in the new one. My dealer cuts keys for free. 19 bucks and a bit of cutting was all it cost me. NOTE: you do destroy your OEM key.

edit....:facepalm:just realized it says G key right in the title. my bad.

Thank you for getting back to me quickly. I will order this one and try again. I read that you had to destroy the old key and switch the chip, is that correct?

Not destroy the key. The locksmith went to take out the circuit board, went in with a pick to take out the old chip, put the right one in (according to his handheld device) and glued it, and out everything back together. I think the chip in the eBay listing could work if you went to program it to the car using techstream but my locksmith did not do that. The device he used makes a copy of the stock keys id or something way more technical than my understanding and then applies it to the eBay key and his chip that he put in. So the car immobilizer thinks I'm using one of the stock keys.

It was also a pain to cut the key too, couldnt copy with a stock key. He was able to do it when we had the computerized key code from the valet key.

The place I went to is called the keyless shop at Sears. They have a few around the country so if you have one near you, it doesn't hurt to go and try it or see what they can do for you.

Thanks for the information, a few others are closely monitoring this mod and your input is greatly appreciated. I've ordered the one you posted and will try it at a local locksmith again when it gets here. I think switching out the internals is the only choice we have on these flip keys vs programming it without know the correct FCC ID and frequency. I uncovered a site that has the flip keys but there were 4 different frequency. Knowing which one is a gamble. Or I can order all 4 and have the locksmith try each one. Then return the ones that did not work and post my findings to help others who are monitoring. I'm up in the air on this one. Not sure what the locksmith will charge.

Does anyone know if there is a non flip G key that works? I’m looking for one with the buttons integrated into a solid key. I remember someone saying that a Rav 4 key is a G key?

There is another thread that I started that is pertaining to both G/H flip keys. Yes, I read the same and purchased a Rav 4 Key with no success. I'm still researching but if there are others that can chime in with the same key by all means, you input is appreciated. I just ordered the one on this thread and playing the waiting game.

Always remember there are 2 things on these keys. First the start disable transponder, aka G, H, dot, etc. That needs to be programmed into the ignition computer. Then there is the transmitter ID, aka FCC ID, that has to match. So Rav4's have G keys, but the transmitter ID is different.

My wife's 2006 Sienna has a similar ID and transponder to my old '07, but her FCC ID had an additional number. My fob worked on her van, but her fob didn't work with my truck.
FCC ID is on the back of your factory fob, or the circuit board inside.

One more thing, you need Techstream to program the fob. Most locksmiths can add the transponder, but not the fob in my experience. I did the Amazon key and it worked, but needed Techstream to program the lock/unlock buttons.

Thank you for the input. it was very useful. Now this is strange. I just disassembled my OEM key and the FCC ID GQ4-52T. Unfortunately, I dont have the after market key with me. It could be the key sent was defective as the ebay had the correct info description. I'll update later today when I disassemble the new fob.

Don't get all worked up, LOL. That Youtube video isn't correct, not all 2020 models come with the keyless system. I have an SR5 4x4 with the SR5 upgrade package and I have the regular key. Would have had to get the TRD package to get the keyless system.
